Orania Berlin is famously one of the few boutique hotels in the city’s famously youthful, grungy Kreuzberg area, better known for clubs, drugs, kebabs and currywurst. On paper, such an expensive hotel in such a place may seem incongruous, but Orania knows the new Kreuzberg well. A new wave of partiers is around these days, who want to party ’til dawn, grab a luxury hotel breakfast (available until 2pm, gasp!), and later take four-hour naps between designer sheets. Orania has also got a lively bar and events calendar of its… > Read Our Full Review

This Downtown Grand Rapids Michigan hotel might be part of a large chain, but it’s a lovely balance of comfort, luxury and easygoing style all the same. The building is not our favorite, one of those boxy contemporary types, but it does have a good showing of windows, and the interiors make up for any lack of exterior charm. Inside, we’re talking a relaxing base of grays and whites studded with colorful accents. There are plenty of local touches, too, for anyone who gets a bit spooked by the Hilton… > Read Our Full Review

The Broadwick, Soho, is a boutique hotel, alright, but also an Art Deco meets Euro disco, maximalist fantasy. There’s never much shying away from colour, pattern, shine or texture. We’re talking mirrored tables and velvet chairs, pink leather and hand-painted furnishings. Minimalists may well cringe at the sight. But the Broadwick is also certainly more than just visuals, the amenities and the service rise to match. Our biggest caution will be for those who like to spend a lot of time in their rooms. Sooke Harbour House is a modernized build with a timeless feel, a bit like a seaside cabin with a couple extra limbs. It is also one of our favourite sizes for a hotel. There’s enough space that you can exist fairly independently, but you’ll rarely be competing with other guests for the staff’s attention. The sea views are impeccable, the exterior crisp and white, surrounded by salt air, stones, and some wilderness-esque landscaping that adds a homey feel to the property. This new West End offering to Portland, Maine’s hospitality scene is the quintessential luxury boutique hotel. The Longfellow hits right, despite feeling a little young, and super-clean, for a quirky ol’ town like Portland. It’s the perfect place though for the unashamedly attached to creature comforts. In keeping with the local aesthetic, it’s a red-brick building that looks simple from the outside. The sleek newness of the outside might need a few years to settle in, but inside, literally and figuratively, the hotel fits perfectly into the city. The wood-paneling… > Read Our Full Review

Bask by the waterfront for this iconic Riveira boutique, which boasts modern luxury, historic beauty and central convenience. Pestana Vintage Porto occupies a set of 18th century buildings deemed culturally significant by UNESCO, so you know you’re in good hands. The Lucerne is an old-school, classic boutique hotel on the Upper West Side which offers good value, simple luxury and a little bit of calm. We start with a 1904 red-brick building that just screams old New York formal. The decor respond in kind – sophisticated, though a bit too risk averse maybe. Hotel Copernicus, in Kraków’s Old Town, is, we feel, fit for a (Renaissance era Polish) king. Its ornamented reddish brick facade just demands attention, even amongst a whole bunch of other lovely buildings. On the picturesque Kanonicza Street, we love how this hotel both fits in and stands out. Holy disco balls! This renovated boutique motel on the outskirts of Nashville, Tennessee, is a love letter to retro. If you don’t tend to swoon over pastiche design, this might not be for you. In Boise, the best walking is by the river, and this upscale boutique hotel is just a 5-minute walk from the water. Besides the location, we’re looking at cute, spacious, luxury accommodation. The name The Thief is a nod to the area’s history; the now artsy Tjuvholmen district once had a reputation for unsavoury characters. We’ll assume the hotel is a force of a happier kind of gentrification, because it’s hard to imagine now. Most of the characters you’ll encounter here will be super sweet. Hotel Clermont, in the heart of the trendy Poncey-Highland neighborhood is something a small celebration of the city’s eclectic history. It’s simple: the best things are a little bit weird, and/or books. These come into perfect alignment between the bustling Union Square and the more fanciful Theatre District, in the art-covered walls and moody lighting of Hotel Emblem. The first thing you’ll note are the floor-to-ceiling stacks of colorful books forming a wall in one of the common areas. Hotel Le Germain in Downtown Montreal is a bright modern take on boutique hotels that we’re happy to see growing. The Quebecois Germain Hotel chain have been introducing Canada to sophisticated, contemporary accommodation since the 90s. And this, their third hotel, remains one of their most eye-catching. Comparisons to Wes Anderson are overused, we know, but the “Catholic boarding school with upscale bar menus” aesthetic feels like that kind of hipster theatrical. This movie-set church school experience is a treasure of meticulous detail to make your vacation auteur film-worthy. A historic Rectory, Convent, and School House make up the property, having gone through extensive renovations. Today, each building offers luxury accommodation. Indeed, ette can easily be considered the antidote for a day exploring the wonderful, yet often stressful, world of Disney. It’s all clean lines and contemporary style — streamlined for comfort. Off the central streets of Astoria, Oregon, tucked along the riverside, there’s a little white box of a boutique hotel called the Bowline. If you’re looking for something hip, unique, and by the water, this is your chance. The hotel bar is a local favorite for a fancy drink, the amenities unique and super-cool. The building was a fish-processing plant, and the hotel does a good job of toning down the horrifying aspects of this and talking up the interesting ones. Park Lane Copenhagen – definitely not for the we-like-to-be-in-the-middle-of-things crowd. It’s in Hellerup, a leafy, affluent northern suburb, walking distance from Øresund. Park Lane is for whatever crowd likes sea breezes, boutique hotels as destinations in themselves, and some real peace and quiet. Oh, and interior design too, maybe. The design is impeccable here. There’s a black and white scheme that manages not to feel like it belongs in the DeVille residence or a Tim Burton film. This motorcycle-centered independent hotel near Walker’s Point, Milwaukee, is a super unique stay catered towards road warriors, but open to all. We might detect whiffs trying too hard, but it’s easy to overlook that in exchange for some hip leather couches and a post-ride massage. Of course, it’s probably best appreciated by the Harley-Davidson demographic it’s aimed at, but we think just about anyone can find something to appreciate here. Many hotels in Downtown Boise have a straight-lines, bright colors contemporary vibe. Which is fine, but we love a little red-brick smarm. Enter Hotel Renegade: Some kind of Steve Martin we’re thinking, to the SPARROW hotel’s Selena Gomez. It’s a stately, building of character with handsome insides and a fresh, luxurious vibe. Hewing Hotel in the North Loop area of Minneapolis is a lovely mix of history and contemporary luxury.
