Snuggled between Old Montreal and Downtown, Hotel Gault is contemporary chic in an historic stone shell.
The building itself has a facade perfectly in line with the rest of the neighbourhood’s 18th-century charm, but the interior of an early Blackberry investor’s Quebec property.
The new-fashioned structure allows for a wonderfully spacious layout, supplemented by clean lines and white space that whisper at new money.
Squidgy, midcentury furnishings and some nice stone floor work keep the rest of the decor from feeling dull.
What happens is the old-fashioned, arched windows let in plenty of sun, painting the hip interiors in a pleasant light that seamlessly combines the two styles into a lovely option with a superb location.
What are the rooms like?
- Number of rooms: 30 in total.

- Comforts: LCD TVs, Nespresso machines, and deluxe bedding.

Rooms at Hotel Gault are fully in the vein of modern stylishness, though if we were being snobby, we might make a few comments about their resemblance to very upscale university dorms.
We’ll hold our tongues, however.
It would be a rare 20-year-old with this taste in furniture, and the original window frames lend a kind of Parisian glamour that we certainly never saw in our uni days.
The simplest rooms are called Lofts, starting at 350 square foot queens and ranging up to kings that hit almost 500 square feet.
From here we move onto Suites, which have workspaces and, in the upper echelons, bathtubs.
Terrace Suites are probably our favourites.
As you might imagine, they’re very similar to the Suites, but with terraces, obviously (semi-private and private).
Apartments finish everything out, the largest over 1000 square feet, with wet bars, seating areas, and bathtubs.
Deluxe options will have a kitchenette.
Anything you choose at Hotel Gault will have a super nice heated floor in the bathroom, incredible bedding, LCD TVs, and Nespresso machines.

And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Casual dining: The Gault Restaurant serves breakfast, brunch, and drinks.
- Relaxed bar: Great for a pre-dinner cocktail or a quiet nightcap.
- Fitness & leisure: 24-hour gym, library, and meeting rooms available.
- Spa options: Local partnerships for nearby spa treatments.
The Gault Restaurant is a relatively simple experience, open for breakfast, brunch, and bevvies.
The breakfast is a solid option, but honestly, there’s enough going on in Old Montreal that we’d recommend taking your money to one of the many top-notch cafés.
If you don’t like to leave early, however, we think you’ll be satisfied.
The bar hours are perfect for a quick drink before heading out on the town, or for a cheeky nightcap.
The space is as you’d imagine: clean, contemporary, and cool.
There is a 24-hour gym, the library is a lovely space to relax afterwards, and there are plenty of meeting rooms available for the business-minded.
You’ll be out a spa, but the hotel has finagled a few agreements with local establishments. Check with the desk for details.
How is the neighbourhood? Anything interesting nearby?

- Historic charm: Surrounded by stone buildings, cafés, and art spaces.
- Nearby highlights: Notre Dame, Museum of Archaeology, and McGill University.
- Walkable culture: Access to Quartier des Spectacles and Mount Royal Park.
Hotel Gault’s neighbourhood is spot-on, near both Downtown Montreal and the older part of the city.
It fits very well into the romantic stateliness that is Old Montreal, all stone buildings housing cute cafés, restaurants, and cultural centers.
There are multiple arts organizations in walking distance of Hotel Gault, as is the Museum of Archaeology and History.
Montreal’s Notre Dame Cathedral is also under 10 minutes on foot.
Saint-Paul Street West, a lively street lined with restaurants, souvenirs, great architecture, and more, is less than 5 minutes walking.
Downtown is a bit further, but important places like the McGill campus are still under 20 minutes walking.
Nearby, you’ll find the Museum of Fine Arts, the McCord Stewart Museum, and the gorgeous Mount Royal Park just a little further on.
The many cultural offerings in the Quartier des Spectacles are also walkable. In the same 20 minutes it takes to get downtown, you can get to Place des Artes.
From here it’s easy access to theatre tours, performances, or just a stroll down Boulevard Saint-Laurent to check out the mural work.
And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?
Some things guests liked:
“Excellent place to stay. Will stay there again. Wonderful staff – very clean – great location – great food in restaurant. Really nice room….”
Very comfortable beds and quality beddings. Probably the best sleep we had in a hotel aside from the Ritz Carlton. Location is convenient. Breakfast was bountiful tasty – better than the last time we stayed. Very chic room and clean. Loved the big bathtub….
Some things guests didn’t like:
The lighting in the room was not very good and there was no full length mirror….
If I’m being really picky, a power outlet near the bed would have been handy….
