TL;DR
- Exclusive setting: Star Island property with private beach and yacht harbor views.
- Upscale vibe: Elegant, adult-oriented, seasonal escape in Montauk.
- Facilities: Pools, spa, bikes, tennis, and plenty of luxury amenities.
- Check prices here
Well, its Montauk, it’s The Hamptons, so the super-indulgent experience isn’t exactly astounding, but we’d venture to say that the combination of extensive grounds, private beach and superb facilities makes this hotel a good time.
The property is a collection of crisp wooden buildings on the edge of Lake Montauk. It nestles on Star Island surrounded by yacht dockings and charter companies. Just a touch of sweet to go with all the salt.
If you want an old Montauk, chill family vibe and like to bemoan the ‘Hamptonization’ of the area, we think this might not be the place.
Children are definitely allowed, but the elegance of it all feels very adult. Since its only open seasonally, a nice September decompress after sending the kids off to boarding school is the perfect time.
It screams upscale and exclusive, like somewhere Gwyneth Paltrow would meet her doula for brunch.
What are the rooms like?
- Number of rooms: 107
- Views: Courtyard, Water, or Beachfront — most with excellent outlooks.
- Luxury touches: Plush beds, robes, Nespresso, minibars, and 37” TVs.
- Bathrooms: Rain showers and Aesop bath products.
- Design: Whitewashed wood, bright linens, and subtle accents.
- See each room in detail here
There’s a wide variety of rooms, all with pretty decent views. Arguably the worst is the Courtyard option, but it’s cute place anyway, all hedges and gleaming white deck chairs.
Which leaves Water and Beachfront, both gorgeous and with great boat watching opportunities.
Patios and balconies may be limited to select rooms and suites, but every room is straight luxurious. You’ll find plush mattresses, cozy robes, 37” TVs, Nespresso machines and beautifully curated mini bars.
Bathrooms have lovely rain showers and Aesop bath amenities.
The decor is straightforwardly, decidedly elegant. We’re talking about whitewashed wood paneling, bright linens and just a whisper of dark accents in the piping on the pillowcase or the mount for the bedside lamp.
The devil is in the details, and they’ve been meticulously attended to. We feel like it may err on the side of sterile, but can’t deny it’s magazine-worthy.
What are prices like?
And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Main dining: Ocean Club Montauk, seafood-focused restaurant and bar.
- Views: Lounge with panoramic harbor outlooks.
- Extras: Chef’s table and poolside bars for relaxed indulgence.
- Activities: Tennis, volleyball, bocce, and paddleboarding.
- Wellness: La Prairie–collaborated Cabana spa (opening May 2025).
- Convenience: Bicycles for local exploring.
Ocean Club Montauk is the main restaurant and bar, an open, breezy spot with lots of wood paneling and beige leather.
It’s very seafood-forward, which is exactly what it should be, in our opinion.
The Bar and Lounge is 90% window, in the best of ways. You’ll be able to watch the harbor tuck itself in each night, shimmering little glass of brut rosé in hand.
The Chef’s table allows for a bespoke dining experience, while the Pool Bar invites you to caʒ up your day. Presumably you’ll have more brut rosé, but this time at the pool, so it’s different.
Or head to the other pool on the great lawn, next to the cottages. It’s like a beach with grass, and meticulously clean water.
Or, head to the real beach, paddle board in hand, if that’s your thing. There’s also tennis, volleyball, and bocce, alongside a 24-hour fitness center equipped with only the best.
If you have any interest in exploring the area, enjoy the hotel’s bike access. If you don’t, the Cabana is coming in May 2025.
The Cabana is a chic wellness center offering massaging and other spa-like treatmeants, conducted in collaboration with La Prairie.
How is the neighborhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Location: Star Island on Lake Montauk, slightly outside town center.
- Getting around: 20-minute bike ride or short drive into town.
- Local spots: Montauk Brewing Co. and the Plaza for dining.
- Nature: Shadmore State Park, Hither Hills, and Lighthouse Museum.
- Exploring: Route 27 gives access to East Hampton and beyond.
You’re in the center of Star Island, the little peninsula stretching out to Lake Montauk. It’s not the very center of town, but with all the facilities at your fingertips, it doesn’t really need to be.
We’d recommend grabbing the property bikes and taking them out, as the center is less than a 20-minute bike ride away. It’s also a super-easy drive.
Grab a beer at Montauk Brewing Company, check out Shadmore State Park, or just wander around the Plaza and see what looks good for lunch.
The outdoorsy can check out Hither Hills or Montauk State Park, with the Lighthouse Museum open seasonally.
If you’re craving some Hamptons chaos or a super secluded adventure, follow route 27 towards East Hampton for access to the roads that wind throughout the rest of the Island.
And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?
Some things guests liked:
“The location and peacefulness of the property. Early fall fire pits to end your night was a plus! Shout out to Michael our driver and Dennis from the docks who were genuine people, big hearts and were always there to help and guide us….”
“Beautiful property. Two pools arcade shops restaurant and outside bar. A mini resort feel. Clean spacious rooms. My favorite spot in Momtauk. Expensive but worth a splurge every so often….”
Some things guests didn’t like:
”Undisclosed charges of Pet fees ($100/day!!!) & Water Club Fees ($50/day) even for the guests who do no water activities, and the indoor pool accessibility posted on Booking.com was incorrect. It was closed for renovation or whatever reason the staff said. This made us feel less reliable about booking.com….”
”The food. It could be better. Again the service was great, but for how much you’re paying, the food was pretty bland. Much nicer food elsewhere for roughly the same cost. I didn’t finish one full meal there as the food was just so boring or bland….”
