Canopy Grand Rapids Downtown

This Downtown Grand Rapids Michigan hotel might be part of a large chain, but it’s a lovely balance of comfort, luxury and easygoing style all the same. The building is not our favorite, one of those boxy contemporary types, but it does have a good showing of windows, and the interiors make up for any lack of exterior charm. Inside, we’re talking a relaxing base of grays and whites studded with colorful accents. There are plenty of local touches, too, for anyone who gets a bit spooked by the Hilton… > Read Our Full Review

Residence Inn

This Downtown Grand Rapids hotel might not be the most imaginative spot in the city, but it’s a solid choice with good amenities. We’ll be honest, the name ‘Residence Inn’ doesn’t really fill our hearts with love, today or any other day. The building lit up at night though gives it a certain romance. It’s a wedge-shaped number reminiscent of Manhattan’s Flatiron, but the art deco vibes are reserved for the evenings, courtesy of some clever outdoor lighting decisions. For flair, that’s about it. If you’re looking for oodles of… > Read Our Full Review

The BlueJay Hotel

This unique Grand Rapids Michigan hotel on the west side of the Grand River is a place for the more low key tourists among you. We love a cute logo, of course, and that might be swaying our opinion. Ultimately, though, if you snag a room here, you’ll feel a bit more like a local than in most places. It’s an unusual space. The property is available for events, for individual rooms, and as an entire house rental. As an event space, there are many connections with local vendors that… > Read Our Full Review

The Townsend Hotel

The Townsend offers an unusual mix of Gen-X, modern, and classic luxury in Birmingham, MI, a comfortable, sensible suburb of our beloved Motor City, Detroit. Birmingham feels like the younger sibling of a former child star that just became a real estate agent and found true happiness with two homes and a hot tub. Detroit is trying to stay out of the tabloids, while Birmingham argues with their conservative spouse about inviting them to Thanksgiving. The hotel itself is set on a chichi street in the center of Birmingham in… > Read Our Full Review

Detroit Foundation Hotel

The golden boy of all Detroit boutique hotel lists, the Detroit Foundation has more than earned its reputation. A combination of excellent lodgings, top-notch food, gorgeous design and a certain je ne sais quoi keeps the place in high regard with both locals and visitors. The building is an icon from 1929, and originally served as the headquarters of the Detroit Fire Department. It’s a stunning work of symmetry and order in red brick and white marble, and a majestic sight across from the contemporary glass boxes of Huntington Place…. > Read Our Full Review

CityFlatsHotel

Horrific squashed typography notwithstanding, this Downtown Grand Rapids eco hotel is a nice example of creative hospitality. It’s not the first nice hotel undermined by branding choices, but we’re more disappointed here – CityFlatsHotel, as one of the more authentic sustainability-focused hotels out there, deserves better. It’s an old building converted into a sustainable space, recently welcomed into the Ascend Hotel Collection. Some cool decisions related to sustainability include cork flooring, bamboo linens, and a shop devoted to eco-friendly products used at the hotel. The vibe is definitely contemporary, despite… > Read Our Full Review

Hotel David Whitney

This stunning boutique hotel, in an iconic building in Downtown Detroit Michigan, first opened in 2014 as the Aloft at the David Whitney. The pandemic, however, lead to its transformation into the more simply titled, Hotel David Whitney, a current jewel in Marriott’s Autograph Collection. It is Detroit’s Grand Hotel, a monument to the grandeur of the city’s era of prosperity and opulence. The building is one of the few left in the city by the famed architecture firm Daniel H. Burnham & Co. Unfortunately, it no longer sports the… > Read Our Full Review

Shinola Hotel

This boutique hotel is bright, modern, it’s got traces of industrial chic and a stunner of an art collection. And what can be more Downtown Detroit, Michigan than a post-industrial art cavern cobbled together from of a former department store, and former factory? Charmingly, the factory that makes up Shinola’s small campus used to make Singer sewing machines, and the creative spirit of fashion never left. As big-name hotel chains all scramble to perfect the boutique hotel in Detroit, we find this impeccable local success story makes for a more… > Read Our Full Review

The Leonard at Logan House

This historic house in Grand Rapids Michigan’s Heritage Hill neighborhood offers a relaxed, classic B&B stay in a charming setting. It’s a 1914 mansion with some lovely old English-style architecture, one that originally belonged to a local refrigerator baron. It’s a delightful place to be, all rich woods and soft tiles with touches of period-appropriateness to the furniture, but nothing too strict. Thus, the ambiance stays laid back instead of grand. It gives more rich cookie-giving grandma than rich knuckle-smacking grandma, and this we greatly appreciate. In other words, more… > Read Our Full Review

The Siren Hotel

Who doesn’t like a good Homer reference in their tourism day-to-day? This Siren is a Downtown Detroit, Michigan boutique beauty from the sumptuous stylings of the Ash Hotel Group. It is housed in a Renaissance Revival building from 1923 – perfectly suited to the brand’s notably chic, vintage vibe. The lobby itself is a worth a stay, mysteriously curtained behind its floor-to-ceiling windows. It’s lavishly decorated with swathes of velvet, ornate golden furnishings, and warm lamplight that gives it a forever-nighttime vibe. It all matches perfectly with the building’s carved… > Read Our Full Review
