A historic boutique hotel in Portland’s bustling Downtown, The Clyde has a complex history featuring some of the city’s most iconic properties.
A fairly typical hotel in its youth, it was the 2005 acquisition by ACE hotels that established it as a top level boutique hotel.
It left ACE in 2024 and rebranded as The Clyde, its original name when it first opened as a hotel over a century ago
This involved a few changes: the virtual reception & front desk, for example, are new, tech forward features that we’re generally not big fans of. Let’s see how this plays out with guests at The Clyde.
The original cool, low-key, creative-class hotel that launched a thousand industrial-chic bunk beds remains, in all its aloof glory though.
Worn trinkets and repurposed wood add vintage charm to the clean lined, straightforward design of the rooms.
A favorite feature is the common area in the lobby, a place to work, play, hang, and enjoy the alternative spirit of hotels past, present and future.
What are the rooms like?
- 79 rooms: Mix of shared-bathroom budget options and stylish suites.
- Standard perks: Linens, coffee/tea, heating & AC, and mini-fridge in all rooms.
- Suite style: King Suite has loft-like design, claw-foot tub, and record player setup.
- See each room in detail here
First thing is, some rooms feature a shared bathroom. If you’re not too fussed about that, snag a deal and enjoy the vibes of one of Portland’s hippest hotels on the cheap.
Beyond the bathrooms, each room offers all the standard amenities: cozy linens, tea and coffee capabilities, heat & AC, and a mini-fridge for your craft beers.
Bathrooms are well-stocked with amenities, though you won’t find any (offensively passé) monogrammed robes.
Your smallest, cheapest option is a simple Queen Room with shared bathroom, good for short-term and budget travelers.
The King Suite, however, gives “your rich friend with good taste just remodeled their loft.”
It’s a gorgeous open-concept space with a tawny tiled shower and claw-foot bathtub in the center, enclosed by plywood and sliding shiplap doors.
If you’re a fan of records and like a good sectional, this is the one for you.
What are prices like?
And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Scaled-back dining: Complimentary continental replaces the old cocktail lounge.
- Coffee culture: Onsite Water Avenue Coffee plus Portland cafés everywhere.
- Neighborhood eats: Surrounded by award-winning restaurants, bars, and a ramen joint across the street.
Facilities have been pared down during the changeover, with a complimentary continental instead of a James Beard-awarded cocktail lounge as your main source of on-site eating.
Fancy Portland coffee can still be easily accessed at an onsite Water Avenue Coffee Company.
Alternatively, use the motivation to treat yourself to a Portland coffee tour and enjoy searching the city for your very own go-to café.
Ultimately, you’ve got a great excuse to get out into the city and try the many, many award-winning restaurants.
We’ve said it before and will say it again, you don’t come to a foodie hotspot to eat at the hotel every night.
Or, if you do, you might be doing it wrong.
Though, if you are around the hotel for dinner, don’t miss the ramen joint across the street.
How is the neighborhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Prime spot: Between Downtown, Old Town, and the Pearl District.
- Powell’s Books: Legendary City of Books just across the street.
- Walkable culture: Theaters, art museum, parks, and shops nearby.
- Easy transit: Reach boutiques, bars, and restaurants beyond downtown.
Now that we’ve decided that dining out is the best strategy, we can celebrate the hotel’s exceptional location.
Sitting happily in the crux of Downtown, Old Town, and the Pearl, you can walk to any number of the city’s notable attractions.
First, you’ve gotta check out Powell’s, the storied City of Books and one of Portland’s best-known stores.
It’s basically across the street, and you’ll be able to find something there for everyone, even if it’s just a tote bag you’ll show off to your friends back home.
There’s Portland-perfect Living Room Theaters also across the street, cool stages, the Art Museum, and multiple parks within walking distance.
For any cool boutiques, hip bars, or gourmet restaurants on your top five list that aren’t in the city center, we recommend using the ample and easy public transit.
And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?
Some things guests liked:
”Location was great. LOVED the white noise machine in the room. Very cute decor. Loved the layout of the room. Bed and pillows very comfy. Again, incredible location. Easy to walk so many places and it also felt safe and clean. Would absolutely stay here again!…”
”Great location. Cool vibes. Spacious and funky room…”
Some things guests didn’t like:
”The self-check-in was unusual; they send you a building code and room code on the day of your check-in, instead of giving you a key card at the front desk. It worked fine, but was not something I was used to….”
”The bathroom door handle was difficult to use and the door didn’t stay on the track it was supposed to. The fridge also could’ve been upgraded to one with a freezer so that any icepacks for medication could be frozen again for traveling…..”
