The Junto Hotel

This Franklinton, Columbus hotel is the place to be if you want to be west of the Scioto. Only opening in late 2023, it already somehow feels quite emblematic of the neighborhood. Franklinton is a cool, boxy zone, dominated by one of Columbus’ main attractions: the Center of Science and Industry (COSI). The Junto is a decidedly contemporary hotel, but there’s a mature charm to the leather couches and central fireplace. There’s a library, and even the rooftop bar has a certain calm ease to it, tailor-made for soft evenings… > Read Our Full Review

Hotel LeVeque

From the marble lobby to the marble bathrooms, Hotel LeVeque has certainly latched onto the trappings of luxury and hung on. They’re well-applied, toeing the edge of gaudy without ever really going over. The hospitality is excellent too of course (it’s Columbus, Ohio, people!), but the focus at Hotel LeVeque is on timeless sophistication. We’re especially drawn to where the historical and ornamental work together. A lot of it is in the high ceilings of the 1927 building, where the sun pours in, glinting off the brass fixtures and warming… > Read Our Full Review

Graduate Columbus

Another of the Hilton’s, 2024 acquired, Graduate chain’s Midwestern offerings, this Short North boutique offers a nice break from the bustle of Downtown Columbus. The building has a full first floor of brick and tall windows that make for a delightfully sunny restaurant, and a vibe of all-American good cheer. It is, we have to admit, exactly what you’d expect. The experience is well-curated, locally-flavored and undeniably cool, but like the Graduate chain itself, there’s also something a bit contrived about it all. Probably it’s the combination of hotel and… > Read Our Full Review

voco the Clair

If you wanted something truly fresh in Downtown Cincinnati, this contemporary boutique by IHG is the one for you. The building is new, the rooms are new, everything is hip, and the only reason it’s not shiny is because that’s not really the vibe they’re going for. Nope, this isn’t impersonal chrome or faux art-deco brass-gold. It’s more stone pillars and plenty of windows. For us, we would be hard-put to choose anything but a historical hotel in the super-vintage center of Cincinnati, but we know it’s not for everyone…. > Read Our Full Review

Kimpton Schofield Hotel

This is a Downtown Cleveland boutique hotel from the legendary Kimptons, and a testament to the brand’s enduring legacy. We usually try to prioritize hotels with a little more of an indie vibe, but it would be pretty preposterous to leave this one off our Cleveland lists. We don’t need to say that the amenities are top-notch, but we will anyway. You’ve got your Frette linens, your in-room yoga mats, complimentary rental guitars, and loads more. Of course, the building is a delight, a renovated landmark from famed Cleveland architect… > Read Our Full Review

Fidelity Hotel

This small, Downtown hotel is one of the most exciting newcomers to the Cleveland hotel scene. The building is an old one, formerly the Fidelity Mortgage building or the Baker Building, having overseen over a century of Cleveland’s history. And one might forget, looking at the past decades, that Cleveland was one of the auto boom’s first urban darlings. While this influence can be seen in many different parts of the city (the Museum of Art, for example), the Fidelity Hotel has done a splendid job pushing the city’s ‘old… > Read Our Full Review

Kinley Cincinnati Downtown

This Downtown Cincinnati hotel is a sleek contemporary space perfect for anyone with an eye for design. Like a pair of well-connected siblings who live in different cities, the Kinley brand seems pretty determined to make its mark on the US boutique hotel scene. It’s backed by Marriott and (shocker!) part of its Autograph Collection, so if you want a mom-and-pop authentic Cincy experience, you’ll want to keep looking. It’s a total Skarsgård brother of a hotel, however. The Kinley Cincinnati might not be pulling itself up by its bootstraps,… > Read Our Full Review

ROOST Cleveland

This apart-hotel in Downtown Cleveland is best suited for long stays, sure, but it’s worth looking at no matter how long you plan to stay. It takes a good amount of thoughtful design for us to feature an apart-hotel, though we admit ROOST properties always have a bit of an advantage. The Philadelphia-based brand has properties from Cleveland eastward, mostly concentrated in Pennsylvania. They have a nice vibe of upscale yet hip, a modern East Coasty-take on luxury. Beyond this, ROOST properties have an uncanny ability to occupy super-cool buildings…. > Read Our Full Review

The Glidden House

The Glidden House is a charmingly old-style boutique hotel in Cleveland’s University Circle, near the Case Western campus. This is the spot for any culture-vores, in the perfect location for museum-going. The house itself is on the National Register of Historic Places, a 1910 testament to an eclectic French Gothic style. As you might imagine, the architecture is stunning, delicate, though also grand, all red brick, pale stone and multi-paned windows. The interiors are modernized, though perhaps a bit too much for our taste. We’re talking eclectic mixes of antiques… > Read Our Full Review

21c Museum Hotel Cincinnati

This central boutique in the center of Downtown Cincinnati is the perfect place for an art-focused vacation. We feel a bit like the 21c Museum Hotel chain, started in Louisville, KY, is at its best in the Midwest. And this is definitely proof positive. The building itself is a winner, formerly the Metropole Hotel, a gorgeous stone and brick number with a little happy trail of eye-catching wrought-iron balconies down the middle. Inside, everything is fully updated, a contemporary chic so complete you could be in a new Brooklyn loft… > Read Our Full Review

Le Meridien Columbus, The Joseph

This contemporary Short North, Columbus boutique is a put-together place perfect for a stylish vacation in a stylish part of town. If you were heading to an Arts District for grungy creative charm, we’ll have to disappoint you. Short North is on the other end of an upscale development project. This shows in the hotel. It’s fully branded, as are many hotels in the area. The building is unique, window-coated and sleek. They’ve made it to fit into the clean lines and wide streets of the area, with plenty of… > Read Our Full Review

The Lytle Park Hotel

This Downtown Cincinnati hotel is the perfect combination of contemporary glamour and old-school chic. A standalone building in the old Tudor style perched on a corner by one of the city’s many cute little parks, entering Lytle Park Hotel feels like discovering another world. The interior is dripping in luxury, the exterior giving full-on mansion vibes. Part of the Marriott’s Autograph collection, this isn’t entirely surprising, but some Marriotts lack a bit in the personality department. Not so here. It’s definitely eclectic, with an Orientalist undercurrent in the fountains and… > Read Our Full Review
