A beautiful old red brick, mixed-use building, this Downtown Spokane boutique hotel has been in the business longer than most.
Built in 1899, it started out as a short stay boarding house with single-occupancy rooms and shared washrooms.
The current iteration is of course, very different; recently renovated again, it’s clearly an upscale hotel.
Tucked on a block of 1st street, there’s a friendly intimacy to the space as well.
The large windows next to the entrance have a smidge of contemporary flare, while the wrought-iron doorway and elegant awning stay decidedly historical.
It’s a lovely way to enter a hotel, surrounded by glimpses of history and the promise of comfort.
What are the rooms like?
- Number of rooms: 36, ranging from Standard Queen to Montvale Premier Suite.
- Design: High ceilings, large windows, monochrome/decor color palette with pinks, reds, and soft blues.
- Amenities: Cozy linens, TV, desk, microwave, mini fridge, full kitchen in suites.
- Special features: Fireplaces in Presidential Suite, Murphy bed in King Parlor Suite, and 1000+ sq ft in Premier Suite.

Rooms might not be dance-party material, but they’re from the miniscule rooms you’ll find in many historic hotels.
We’d say the high ceilings and large windows are a large part of this.
Decorators were seemingly devoted to the monochrome, with the primary color scheme all pinks and reds, some rooms done up in soft baby blues.
We don’t love it on paper, but in practice it seems to come off nicely. Rooms feel cohesive without a million small design touches, cheerful without feeling busy.
Your simplest room will be a Standard Queen, the most opulent the Montvale Premier Suite, a 1000+ square foot space with a lot of exposed brick for a vaguely industrial vibe. It’s also got a full kitchen.
Each room features cozy linens, a TV, a desk, a microwave and a mini fridge. For spacious luxury with the historical charm, try the fireplace in the Presidential suite, or the Murphy bed in the King Parlor Suite.

How is the neighborhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Location: Central Spokane with easy access to Riverfront Park and downtown attractions.
- Cultural: Mobius Discover Center, Saranac Art Projects, public sculptures, and nearby Spokane Arena.
- Shopping & Dining: Kendall Yards and Osprey Restaurant & Bar for casual and hip experiences.
The location is ideal. Divided by a handful of large roads, Spokane is not always the most pleasant town to walk around. However, in the heart of the city you can easily get where you need to go.
Ruby River Hotel, where you’ll find the pool and hot tub, is on the Northeast side of the city. It’s super quick to drive to and connected to Osprey Restaurant and Bar, a lovely option for a lazy post-pool brunch.
There are a handful of venues, including the Spokane Arena, in the same area.
If you choose to walk, you can take the like half an hour through Riverfront Park and Havermale Point, which can be gorgeous at the right time of day.
There are many cultural offerings near Riverfront Park, including the Mobius Discover Center, Saranac Art Projects, and a bunch of public sculpture.
If you head northwest, you can get to Kendall Yards, a nice spot for hip dining and shopping. Marmot Art Space is a nice place to check out some local visual art.
And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?
Some things guests liked:
“The Montvale is our “Go To” Spokane hotel. You can walk everywhere in the downtown area and on the Island. The second floor lounge is unique and most comfortable for your early morning coffee and reading. The bed is most comfortable. The secure parking area is also a bonus….”
“Such an amazing hotel. just perfect, so cozy. The restaurant and bar in boiler room basement was so great. the hotel room was perfect too. The atrium is top shelf….”
Some things guests didn’t like:
”We had to ask for a coffee maker for the room. It was brought right away and staff were most helpful. Some confusion on which credit card to use for the final billing….”
”Our room happened to have an Open Shower (ADA compliant) was a negative, only because of a thin (polyester-like) too-short curtain that did not fully keep the water in, even though we sprayed the shower carefully in the opposite direction and at a reduced volume. Suggest a heavy vinyl curtain be substituted. Rooms with baths are of course available as well….”
