This Durham, North Carolina studio hotel is an absolute no-brainer for anyone in town on Duke business.
It’s going to be pretty difficult to find something closer to campus; JB Duke is nestled right between Koskinen Stadium and the business school.
Location isn’t the only pro, either. Amenities include a shuttle to the Medical Center, a business center and direct access to campus trails.
The building looks like a newly-built science hall, all windows and glass and landscaping worthy of a snobby professor or two.
The atmosphere is decidedly upscale, the rooms and common areas super-comfortable, making the switch between business and pleasure pretty seamless.
We’d say it gives expensive dorm more than it gives luxury hotel, but it’s a vibe that works well in context.
What are the rooms like?
- Room style: Dorm-like but comfortable, bright, clean, minimal personality.
- Room types: King Singles, Queen Doubles, Corner Kings, and Suites for families or larger stays.
- Amenities: HDTVs, Keurig® machines, Molton Brown bath products, optional kitchen appliances in some rooms.
- See each room in detail here
We say the rooms are dorm-like, and it’s not a lie, but if we’d had dorms like this in college, we might still be there.
Beds are good and comfy, and while the decor has very little personality, it is bright and clean. We’d add a poster or two to make it our own.
In the Suites and larger rooms, the feeling is a bit more apartment-y, in a nice way. The windows are a definite plus, letting in plenty of sunlight and making even the beige feel lively.
Types range from King Singles to Queen Doubles, with oversized Corner Kings that we’d put forward for anyone who wants something kind of nice without going all out on a Suite.
Suites are all Kings, with some differences in size. We’d say they’re best for families who need some extra space.
Couples and especially solo travelers need not bother, in our opinion.
Whatever you choose, you’ll enjoy large HDTVs, Keurig® machines, Molton Brown bath amenities and the odd kitchen appliance available on request.

And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Onsite dining: MarketPlace restaurant with breakfast bar and casual dining, views of nearby greenery.
- Fitness & wellness: Large Fitness Center with sauna, outdoor patios with firepits, complimentary yoga classes.
- Other amenities: Campus shuttle, gift shop, discounted Faculty Club access, pickleball and bocce nearby.
Food is the MarketPlace restaurant, which definitely has a dining hall atmosphere. It’s a nice one, though, that looks out towards the mini-forest nearby.
The breakfast bar has something for everyone, and the menu options ensure you’ll all get the breakfast you want. It isn’t a huge menu, but the choices are well-selected.
Other amenities are mostly campus-related, from the super-big Fitness Center with a sauna.
Other exercise opportunities are local trails, pickleball, and bocce, if you consider bocce exercise (we do).
Get your Duke swag at the gift shop, get discounted access to the Faculty Club, or enjoy a complimentary yoga class at the Inn & Golf Club.
There are outdoor patios for nice days with firepits lit in the evenings.
You’ll find plenty of social events in the Lobby Lounge too, with varied schedules and some extra fees. Check with the front desk if you’re interested.
How is the neighborhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Campus-centric location: Perfect for Duke visitors, shuttles available for easy access to campus sites.
- Downtown access: Less than 10-minute drive to Main Street, shops, galleries, and event spaces.
- Nearby attractions: Can Opener bridge, Nasher Museum of Art, Cameron Indoor Stadium, Golf Club, and various sports facilities.
The location, as we’ve made clear, is definitely great for one purpose, not horrible for another.
If you came to explore Downtown Durham, we’ve probably got better options, but getting there isn’t actually that hard.
You can technically walk in under an hour, and the car ride to Main Street is still under 10 minutes.
Once you’re there, you can walk to almost any of the city’s best shops, galleries, or event spaces.
The famed Can Opener bridge is in a slightly different part of the city, just 7 minutes by car.
It’s got a quite hip little food truck area where you can sometimes find live music and the coolest of the Durham crowd.
Of course, if you want to stay on campus, almost everything is very convenient, and there are free shuttles from the hotel.
The Medical Center for example is 6 minutes by shuttle. The Nasher Museum of Art, 5 minutes, or a pleasant half-hour walk if you’d prefer.
The Golf Club is across the street, and multiple sports facilities are very near.
The Cameron Indoor Stadium and the Basketball Museum, for example, are a 15-minute walk.
