We wish this Charlottenburg, Berlin boutique hotel had a more original name, but still, what the hell, it’s a very charming place.
Sprinkled with historical, artistic elements, Hotel Art Nouveau offers plenty of old-style chic in a pretty overlooked area of West Berlin.
It’s a hard-to-define kind of place. It’s got meeting rooms and facilities, so it sees the odd business traveller, but mainly feels something like a hang-out space for artists.
It always feels homely and down-to-earth, that’s for sure.
Rooms and common areas don’t feel especially hotel-y, and much of the art on the walls is both by local artists and for sale.
Various personal touches throughout the building add more to this homely, artist’s residence feel.
Which, well, we said hard-to-define, but that probably sums Hotel Art Nouveau up.

Rooms at Hotel Art Nouveau have a nice range. Your basic Singles and Doubles range from 15-26 square feet, not super-spacious nor claustrophobic.
Once you’re into the Comfort or Superior levels, rooms expand considerably. These are great for longer-term travellers or couples that like to spread out.
Some have bathtubs, others don’t, but all have cute furniture in bright colours that still don’t feel overwhelming.
The occasional antique will pop up, yet still nothing feels overly designed.
Suites are all 2-bedroom, lovely for families, couples travelling together, or simply friends that like large beds.
The combination of style and decor feels very apartment-like, though sadly with limited kitchens.
They all face the inner courtyard, and are generally nice and calm.
Anything you choose will be quite comfortable, offering desks, sitting areas, self-service coffee and tea, and a TV.
What are prices like?
And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Buffet breakfast – a generous morning spread served on the ground floor, with plenty of choice.
- Historic details – a striking antique brass lift adds a memorable Art Nouveau flourish to the building.
- Meeting rooms – handsome spaces with dark wood and an old-fashioned academic atmosphere can cater to gatherings.
- Cosy lounge – a relaxed, characterful shared space provides somewhere comfortable to read or unwind.
- Rooftop terrace – an inviting outdoor spot for enjoying a coffee or drink in good weather.
Breakfast is served on the ground floor, a rather extensive buffet where we think you’ll find something you like.
That’s about all there is for food, this being a much more homey place to spend time. You’ll have to head off to one of the many nearby restaurants.
We will say that Hotel Art Nouveau is on the light side of facilities, but there are some interesting surprises.
We’ll start with the antique lift, one that we assume inspired the hotel’s name, a gorgeous piece of geometric brass.
They have conference rooms; quite handsome ones, actually. There’s enough dark wood and romantic academic vibes for any number of meetings.
A lounge offers similar vibes for those on an actual holiday that might just want to dig into their Alfred Döblin.
A rowing machine on one floor both presents an opportunity to exercise and ties into the owner’s past as a professional rower.
Finally, we’ve got the rooftop terrace, the perfect place to indulge in a coffee or cocktail on a nice day.
How is the neighbourhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Charlottenburg setting – an old West Berlin neighbourhood with elegant streets, shopping & excellent restaurants.
- Kurfürstendamm nearby – the famous shopping boulevard and Adenauerplatz are within easy reach.
- Asian dining – nearby Kantstrasse is well known for its concentration of Asian restaurants.
- Charlottenburg Palace – the historic palace and its extensive gardens make an excellent excursion.
- Culture & galleries – museums, galleries, and Michelin-starred dining provide options beyond shopping.
- Easy transport – nearby S-Bahn and U-Bahn connections make exploring Berlin straightforward.
Charlottenburg might not have much of the underground flair of Berlin’s east, but there’s a lot to enjoy in the area.
Ease of transportation is obvious; the hotel is perfectly triangulated between the S-Bahn and U-Bahn.
Charlottenburg station sits not too far away, though the half-hour walk with heavy luggage might be a stretch.
Still, there’s much to see near the nearby Adenauerplatz, and the neighbourhood is slowly reclaiming its reputation for excellence.
You’ll find at least one Michelin-starred restaurant, though the culinary strength here goes to a stretch of Kantstrasse known for its Asian cuisine.
A handful of museums and galleries offer up some culture nearby, though it’s the trip to Schloss Charlottenburg that leads the list of nearby attractions.
It’s an easy hop on public transport, and the gardens around the palace can keep you happy for a few hours.
The Bavarian Quarter requires only a short trip as well, and even the hippest parts of East Berlin are accessible via the city’s excellent transport.
And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?
Some things guests liked:
“Very nice small and artistic hotel, conveniently located just off Kurfürstendam main street. Very friendly staff, great room, clean, excellent breakfast, at night very quiet despite inner city location. Art objects all around you. Public car park Conti is located across the street at 100 meter. Very convenient, € 26 daily rate. We will gladly come back to Ingo and friends…..”
Some things guests didn’t like:
”We really missed thick curtains, my friend is really sensible to sunlight and was awake every day by 6AM bc of the sunlight entering the room. The stairs were too dusty and dirty. It would be nice to take care of shared areas as much as they take care of the hotel…..”
