The Mercer, one of the first boutique hotels to key in on the attraction of SoHo, is now a fixture in Lower Manhattan
A hotel since 1997, this 1890 Romanesque revival building’s archways and red brick are the building blocks of an upscale NYC hotel.
Elegance is the watchword here, with a seamless melding of traditional architecture and modern minimalism.
It’s a quiet kind of luxury that will never really go out of style.
It’s a chance to dip your toes into the charm of the New York loft, though we assume the original lofters didn’t enjoy these kinds of amenities.
We’re talking roomy suites, plush linens, swanky lobby restaurants, the works.
And sure, maybe the artist loft shared-bathroom experience is romantic, but we’d choose this one any day.
What are the rooms like?
- 73 rooms designed mainly for solo travelers and couples
- Suites available with fireplaces & oversized bathtubs
- Tranquil décor with beige tones, natural light, and floral pops
- Living areas in all rooms with seating, minibars, TVs, and newspapers
- Marble bathrooms add timeless luxury
- See each room in detail here
Rooms are designed for solo travel and couples, in general. Suites will get you some extra room, but nothing is designed for a group.
You can choose Guest Rooms mostly based on view, all Queen Singles.
Suites feature king beds and various other amenities. If you can snag one with a fireplace or an oversized bathtub, you’re doing well.
Decor is tranquil and unobtrusive. It’s definitely on the older side, but with a timeless quality.
There’s a beige quality to the whole thing. Yet, the flowers, pops of color, and plenty of natural light keep things feeling lively.
This is the feel of old money, with an extensive Hermes collection and a single grandchild studying Art History at Yale.
All rooms feature a living area with seating, TVs, minibars, daily newspapers, and gorgeous marble bathrooms.

And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Welcome touches like coffee, tea, and small amenities
- Sartiano’s Italian fine-dining restaurant on-site
- Hotel café serving Sartiano’s menu and laid-back meals
- Luxury gym access included through a nearby partner
- Excellent front desk noted for standout service
Little touches like welcome amenities and coffee & tea will highlight your stay.
The on-site restaurant, Sartiano’s, is a super-chic Italian situation set up for sophisticated dinners.
The hotel serves Sartiano’s menu out of the hotel café as well, an option for a more laid-back meal.
We love this spot especially for a morning espresso and croissant, but they have a full selection of breakfasts for our morning eaters.
That’s about all for onsite amenities, though it’s worth noting the exceptional front desk.
You will have complimentary access to a nearby luxury gym.
How is the neighborhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Broadway-side location in SoHo, near Lower Manhattan highlights
- Next to NYU, close to Washington Square Park and the Village
- Lively vibe with shopping, dining, and NYC character
- Tourist spots like Times Square, Central Park, MoMA within short taxi rides
- Bleeker Street MTA stop just 5 minutes away
The hotel is on the Broadway side of SoHo, well-situated for an exploration of the Lower Manhattan sights.
The NYU campus is right next door, close to Washington Square Park and the Village.
It’s as lively an area as the rest of the island, not really the place for a relaxing stroll.
You will, however, have fun wandering. It’s more about seeing what’s around than relaxing, with plenty of shopping, restaurants, and NYC weirdos to watch.
SoHo and the Village will be mostly walkable, but you’ll probably want to grab a taxi to the more touristy areas.
Times Square is about 10 minutes by car. Just tack on a few more for Central Park, MoMA, Radio City, and the rest of the entertainment area.
You’re about a 5-minute walk from the nearest MTA stop on Bleeker Street, of Simon and Garfunkel fame.
From here, the entire metro area of New York is your oyster.
And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?
Some things guests liked:
“Fantastic location. Staff were top notch. Restaurant was outstanding with excellent food and wine list….”
“I was pleasantly surprised by the Mercer. The staff are definitely the highlight (shout out to Joshua) in how friendly and helpful they are. It’s nice that the lobby is just for guests. The room was spacious and they welcomed me with a cookie from Laduree! You can also book a small gym room to work out in, or go to the partner gym if you want something more elaborate. Location is excellent too….”
Some things guests didn’t like:
”The price!!! 1000$ for a basic room???? I was sure that the room will be worth it- but it was not!!!! ‘
”Easier access to porterage out of regular hours would be nice….”
