Hewing Hotel in the North Loop area of Minneapolis is a lovely mix of history and contemporary luxury.
It occupies a 1897 warehouse originally built to house farming equipment, with many of the original details preserved to this day.
We’re talking exposed brick, we’re talking gorgeous wood beams. We’re talking everything you imagine in a renovated warehouse hotel plus a certain boutique jeux ne se quoi.
It’s the sort of place that welcomes snobby art collecting literature professors and 20-something handcrafted cocktail enthusiasts alike.
The (pretty high, in our opinion) price of the rooms is more or less supported by a respectable set of amenities, and service is generally on point.
Relax in the spa, go out in the neighborhood, simply hang out in a deftly decorated hotel room, all options are open to you.
And in this case, form meets function, making for a satisfactory stay in many different ways.
What are the rooms like?

Rooms are fully modernized; the hotel is all-in on the post-industrial vibes.
What is especially notable is how much of the original building they’ve built into the hotel.
The heavy wood beam ceilings feel a bit heavy, sure, but they add so much ambience it would be a crime to remove them.
The design gives contemporary chic with an edge, a perfect match of architecture and decor.
There’s unique printed wallpaper next to buttery brick walls, bright white tiling, and inky black fixtures throughout.
Room types start at King Singles, with Queen Doubles and other King Rooms with unique layouts and superb views.
We’re partial to a loft, and the Loft Kings are super-unique rooms that celebrate the architecture perfectly.
Suites are in the same vein, well-decorated in the cozy post-industrial style, with a few more personal touches. They include extras like sleeper sofas and exceptional views with some seriously unique floor plans.
Whatever you choose, you’ll enjoy plush robes, locally-focused minibars, HDTVs, rain showers, and working areas for Business Guests.

And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Restaurants: Tullibee (farm-to-table, Scandinavian influence), Hewing Bar & Lounge (meat-focused, local cocktails).
- Rooftop: Pool, sauna, lounge with small plates and cocktails.
- Extras: Heated winter pool, dry sauna, lovely rooftop views.
The rooms are great, sure, but they’d never be worth the ticket price without this boutique hotel’s other amenities.
You’ll have a few places to grab a drink or snack, though we think that, in general, you should take advantage of being in one of the city’s most lively neighborhoods.
Regardless, the hotel offers some solid options. You’ve got the farm-to-table-loving Tullibee, a fish-focused option with strong Scandinavian influence.
For a more laid-back (and meat-focused!) dining experience, you’ll have the Hewing Bar & Lounge.
They incorporate many locally-made liquors into their cocktails.
Finally, head to the top floor for the cherry on top of the Hewing experience.
The hotel roof boasts a pool, sauna, and lounge, beautifully situated and ready to make your time in Minneapolis something special.
The lounge serves small plates and lovely cocktails, and you’re welcome to bring your own food and beverage up if it’s closed.
The pool is small, but lovely, heated in the winter to make a kind of hot tub near the dry sauna.
How is the neighborhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Area: North Loop, lively food and nightlife scene, near Mississippi River.
- Parks & Walks: Waterside park, riverside paths, bridges, green space along the river.
- Nearby Attractions: Mill City Museum, Maine Cinema, Mill District, Hennepin Arts, Orpheum Theatre.
- Access: Downtown within walking distance; easy connection to local event spaces and museums.
North Loop is a little away from Downtown Minneapolis proper, but it’s the best base for food, drink, and the Mississippi River.
Much of the city’s best food will be within walking distance, and there’s more nightlife nearby than anywhere else in the Twin Cities.
It’s also just a 10-minute walk to the closest waterside park, a small playground connected to riverside walking paths.
There are plenty of cool bridges that connect the extensive green area along the banks of the Mississippi to the other side of the water.
If you cross, you’ll find a nice selection of attractions like the Mill City Museum and the Maine Cinema, among others.
If you’d rather stay urban, head downtown towards the many different event spaces and museums.
The Mill District, arguably the most historical area, is a 20/25-minute walk, while Hennepin Arts and the famed Orpheum Theatre are under 20 minutes away.
And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?
Some things guests liked:
“Our stay was an experience in itself! Unbeatable rooftop with a view of the Minneapolis skyline. Amazing rooftop spa area! Comfortable rooms with a modern-scandi design. The staff were very friendly and food and drinks were all fantastic….”
“The Hewing was a wonderful place to spend our anniversary. It’s location is the best: it’s a lively area with lots of restaurants and unique shops. The sauna and hot tub on the roof were a treat in the cold temperatures. And we had a great breakfast and dinner on site. We were able to walk around the city easily as well….”
Some things guests didn’t like:
”Restaurant options for food, or even just one main course dish that’s vegan friendly. The drink menus are different from the rooftop bar to the restaurant. So if you fall in love with an upstairs drink, you probably can’t get it at the restaurant….”
”High cost of rooms….”
