This gorgeous hotel in Minneapolis’ Mill District pairs a little historical flair with post industrial-chic luxury.
It’s a Hilton, so you can expect stress-free comfort of course.
Canopy is an easy choice for anyone who isn’t a hardliner for independent hoteliery. We’re happy ourselves to look past the chain branding on this one.
The real star of this Canopy is the irreproducible early-1900s architecture.
The hotel occupies the former headquarters of a thresher and plow manufacturer. It’s two buildings, technically, cleverly built to look like one, with a covered courtyard-kind-of-space.
It’s full of glass and clean lines and what feels like acres of reclaimed wood.
It makes for a perfect balance of old and new, all contemporary chic mixed with the rough edges of the city’s history.

We’ll start with one highlight, our favorite highlight: a beacon of hope in the murky depths of midwestern hotel flooring.
Rugs, not carpets!
Wood floors covered in boldly patterned rugs set off the space perfectly.
Everything works well together: the delicate metalwork on the headboards matches the windows, grays and blacks are offset by rich, warm tans in the wood beams and exposed brickwork.
Guest Rooms range from King Singles to Queen Doubles, with views of either the atrium or the city.
Rooms with lofted ceilings are especially lovely, all sun and glass and brick.
Studio Suites have both one king and 2 queen bed options, not so different from a guest room besides the more generous space.
The Premium Suite is a 1-bedroom affair with a king bed and almost triple the space of a Guest Room.
It’s great for a couple that needs to work a lot, or tends to fight a lot.
Whatever you choose, you’ll enjoy the best in-room amenities like mini fridges, coffee machines, LCD TVs, working areas, blackout curtains, and adjustable climate control.

- Bar: Cocktails and rotating local draft.
- Wellness: Fitness center, spa, indoor wood sauna, outdoor plunge pool.
- Extras: Meeting rooms, event spaces, boutique.
The onsite restaurant is called Umbra, a standard, yet gourmet, American joint open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
The morning is all eggs and cured meats (with limited vegan options), lunch and dinner salads and flatbreads and burgers and wings and bowls.
The bar stands ready to serve up cocktails and a rotating draft of a local brew.
Once you’ve carbed up, you work it off at the onsite fitness center.
Of course, we’d probably steer you towards the spa if you really want to indulge.
There are places to relax, both indoors and out. Indoors is a lovely wood sauna, and the outdoor plunge pool has a nice view of the neighborhood.
Finally, we’ve got meeting rooms, event spaces, and a boutique in the hotel ready for you to scoop up souvenirs.
How is the neighborhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Area: Mill District, central, walkable to Downtown Minneapolis.
- Nearby: Mill Ruins Park, Stone Arch Bridge, riverfront, Guthrie Theater, Mill City Museum.
- Entertainment: Orpheum Theatre, Target Center, Fine Line within half-hour walk.
- Nightlife: Warehouse District and North Loop 30 min walk, 5 min drive.
- Distant spots: Lowry Hill and Loring Park 5 min drive.
The Mill District is an excellent area with good access to everything Minneapolis has to offer.
Downtown isn’t known for its nightlife, but from Canopy, you can get to the slightly grungy but solidly fun Warehouse District and North Loop in half an hour on foot. The drive is just 5 minutes.
Most of Minneapolis’ charm lies on the banks of the Mississippi, of course.
Mill Ruins Park and the Stone Arch Bridge are less than a 10-minute walk from the hotel, and the rest of the green area around the river is just waiting for you to explore.
It’s an easy, relaxed way to get to know the city.
If you like, cross the water and check out the other side. You’ll find the Guthrie Theater and the Mill City Museum, with plenty of other cool places to check out.
If you want something more event-based, the hotel is less than a half-hour walk from the Orpheum Theatre, the Target Center, Fine Line, and more.
The only truly far places that you might want to visit will be Lowry Hill and Loring Park, and both are still just 5 minutes away by car.
And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?
Some things guests liked:
“ Everything was so beautiful, clean and cozy. Friendly staff helped with all our questions and the location was so simple to arrive to. Considering it was in the city, we had a very quiet sleep. The bar had great service, i wished we had tried the food! I would 100% stay again….”
“Gorgeous hotel near the stadium. The staff was incredibly helpful and friendly….”
Some things guests didn’t like:
”Wish that the restaurant was larger….”
”Coffee service in the hotel lobby would have been greatly appreciated. Other hotels with Hilton offer this for their guests coming and going the hotel, which would have really been nice coming back from the cold outdoors….”
