Gran Hotel Inglés, Madrid, seems like a blueprint for a luxury, historic boutique hotel.
You get the feeling other hotels saw this one and decided that’s the way to go about it. Or perhaps it was the other way around?
No, we think the former.
So, there’s nothing dramatically unique about it, but there’s an overall sense of grandeur and stately elegance that is hard to replicate.
Thanks to some recent renovations, there’s an additional contemporary chic to most of the spaces.
Again not unique but done perfectly.
The restaurant is notably shiny, clearly art deco influenced but no hint of pastiche.
Rooms weave together the old and new for a new timelessness outlined in both shining old gold and glowing LED.
It sounds a bit weird when I write it out like that, but let us assure you it’s not.
Difficult to explain, maybe. Book it, and see for yourself. It’s not cheap though be warned.
Gran Hotel Inglés is a confident, assured hotel, but with prices to match.
What are the rooms like?
- 48 rooms: A relatively intimate hotel with a clear step-up in space and features as you move categories.
- Warm luxury: Creamy tones, brass accents, and softly lit panels give rooms a rich but calm feel.
- Best picks: Premium rooms and above add bathtubs, more space, and occasional balconies.

Rooms are the perfect balance of reliability and flair.
In the larger rooms, luxurious wall panels backlit for a luminous appeal house well-stocked minibars.
Colours are creamy whites, crisp wood and shining brass.
The glowy situation is reserved for headboards in the smaller rooms, but it’s no less charming.
Deluxe rooms are the simplest, on the very edge of feeling bare. The quality is still high enough for perfect comfort.
We’d still skip them, simply because all other options feature bathtubs. Preferential through Premium rooms range from 30 to 40 square feet, many with balconies as well.
Suites start at 50 square metre Juniors, which are basically just large guest rooms with a separate living area.
Speciality Suites like the Meller or Presidential offer unique architectural elements and stunning views.
If in budget, we think they could easily make even the lamest holiday spectacular.
All rooms at Gran Hotel Inglés still feature the best in linens, gourmet minibars, Smart TVs, coffee machines, and individual climate control.
What are prices like?
And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Art Deco dining: LobByto delivers high-end, theatrical dining without tipping into kitsch.
- Strong bar: A polished cocktail and vermouth menu with themed tasting options.
- Wellness focus: Spa treatments and a premium fitness centre on site.
If you want to feel like you’re in your grandmother’s kitchen with a home-cooked meal, ask the concierge.
Unless your grandmother’s idea of cooking is Iranian caviar and goat cheese millefeuille.
At LobByto, Gran Hotel Inglés’ main restaurant, we’re talking opulence.
There’s a slightly toned-down bar version full of gorgeous vermouth and cocktails, and a really charming collection of themed menus.
They’re still Very Very Fancy, but with options like traditional Castilian cuisine and Afternoon Tea, you’re sure to find something worth splurging on.
Le Max Club is the wellness-focused part of the hotel.
It includes a treatment-focused spa and a premium fitness centre perfect for all our gym rats.
For anything else, we’d be remiss not to mention the concierge.
Want to skip lines? Ask them. Drive, or be driven, in a fancy car? Ask them. Hire a dog walker? You get it.
How is the neighbourhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Ultra central: Located in Madrid’s buzzing Centro district.
- Walk everywhere: Most major sights are reachable on foot.
- Busy vibes: Lively streets day and night, quieter inside the hotel.
Gran Hotel Inglés’ neighbourhood is super central, and super busy, both a blessing and a curse.
Luckily, you’re in a super-upscale, recently renovated hotel. So the nighttime noise isn’t likely to take over.
But if you like relaxing walks before bed, this isn’t the spot.
Madrid’s Centro is almost all-hours, full of people looking for a good time. It’s supremely walkable, with almost all the main attractions easy to get to, especially from the hotel.
The closest spot is Puerta del Sol, a 5-minute walk, which is where you can catch the metro to basically anywhere you want to go.
But mostly it won’t be necessary.
Plaza Mayor is a 10-minute walk from Gran Hotel Inglés, with Palacio Real and Campo del Moro only a bit further away.
The Prado is 15 minutes on foot, and we could easily spend a day wandering around Parque de El Retiro, just another 5 minutes from the iconic museum.
For something more refined, head north towards Salamanca. Here you’ll find some of the city’s best restaurants and upscale shopping.
And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?
