The Wedgewood Hotel & Spa stands as a bastion of old style civility in Vancouver’s modern Downtown.
Bellhops are suited up, classic art and antiques abound and you’ve got seasonally themed, formal afternoon teas throughout the year.
It was founded in the early 1980s by Eleni Skalbania, an old school Greek hotelier, who’s stated aim was to create the ambience of a European country-house
There’s a real old-world feel to the Wedgewood then, but with enough modern amenities these days to keep it from feeling dated.
The timeless quality doesn’t extend to the exterior though, strangely enough, which looks a little too disparate from the pomp of the interiors.
The entrance though, with its old style blue awnings is certainly nice, and it all gets better from there.
What are the rooms like?
- Number of rooms: 83, traditionally styled and filled with classic comforts.
- Design: Plush carpets, curtained windows, and handsome wooden furnishings.
- Suites: Large and elegant, sleeping up to six with grand views.
- Amenities: Nespresso machines, marble bathrooms, and climate control in all rooms.

The traditional bent of the Wedgewood means that rooms are very much like guest rooms.
They’re carpeted, curtained, and padded headboard-ed to a T.
The colour scheme is on the line of beige, saved only by a caramel tone to the leather and some pretty nice little wooden chairs at the desks.
Basic rooms start at 250 square feet, which hits the edge of small but is generally comfortable.
The Executive Rooms run up to 400 square feet, which will make even the most overpack-liable couple happy.
Suites have a bit more going on decoratively, but they’ve still mastered the vibe of rich grandmother’s sitting room and don’t want to let go.
They’re solidly roomy, with handsome furnishings, some excellent views, and the ability to sleep up to 6, in some cases.
Amenities in even the most simple rooms are extensive. We’re talking Nespresso machines, Bodum kettles, independent climate control, marble bathrooms, LCD TVs, and iHomes with Bluetooth capabilities.

And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Dining: Bacchus Restaurant & Lounge serves all meals plus brunch and Afternoon Tea.
- Michelin nod: Recommended by Michelin and praised for its refined presentation.
- Drinks: Lounge offers creative cocktails and a vast spirits list.
- Wellness: Full-service spa, fitness centre, and a yoga terrace with private sessions.
The dining is pretty extensive, as you’d expect from a classic hotel like the Wedgewood.
Bacchus Restaurant & Lounge serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as a weekend brunch and a seasonal Afternoon Tea.
It’s all super-chic and beautifully presented, from charcuterie to delicate desserts to fruit-laden drinks.
It’s been ‘Michelin-recommended’, not quite there yet, but one to look out for in future Michelin Star lists.
The lounge area then is the perfect place for an evening cocktail, with long lists of drinks, spirits, wines, and more.
Wellness is the other major strength of the Wedgewood Hotel & Spa of course.
Facilities include a top of the range, full-service spa, fitness centre, and a lovely yoga terrace.
Private, couple, and corporate yoga sessions are bookable in advance.
How is the neighbourhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Location: Prime downtown Vancouver, close to the Art Gallery and cultural spots.
- Walkability: Easy access to the waterfront, parks, and public transport.
- Local charm: West End cafés, Stanley Park trails, and harbour views nearby.
Downtown Vancouver might not have the ‘vibes’ of some of the other neighbourhoods, but it’s seriously convenient.
The Wedgewood Hotel itself is spitting distance from the Vancouver Art Gallery, which is surrounded by smaller galleries and various event venues in walking distance.
The city is small enough that, as long as you’re on the peninsula, you’ll be able to see most of the sights without too much trouble.
The waterfront is a 15-minute walk, where you’ll find the train station, the Gastown Steam Clock, and two cute parks on either side of the ferry terminal.
Head towards Coal Harbour for a wander, towards the more residential, but cosy, West End.
Here you’ll find a friendly atmosphere and a cute collection of cafés and restaurants, and the entrance to the green giant Stanley Park.
This large area of park on Vancouver’s tip is full of running trails, beaches, lighthouses, gardens, and the Aquarium.
And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?
Some things guests liked:
“The Wedgewood is in a fantastic location with wonderful 5 star service. We had a great stay and two great evening dinners in their restaurant. 5 stars all round for this lovely old fashioned Hotel and their staff….”
“This is a world-class hotel that provides all the services that you require. Our room was very large and included a desk, sofa and arm chair. The furnishings were top notch. The bed was very comfortable. There is a small bar area which includes a mini fridge, Nespresso coffee machine and kettle. Robes and slippers were available in the closet. Our room was serviced every morning and free ice was delivered in the late afternoon. We looked forward to some cookies left in the room when we returned in the evening. If you are flying, the hotel is located a few blocks from the Vancouver City Centre Skytrain station which gets you to the airport in about twenty minutes. Having stayed there previously we were not disappointed in our return. The cost is not cheap but it is worth it…”
Some things guests didn’t like:
”The rooms are a little tired but sort of adds to the charm….”
”I don’t care for the bathtubs in the rooms, we don’t use it!!..”
