TL;DR What makes this NYC boutique hotel special? Why should I stay here?
- Trendy spot: in the East Village with bold design choices
- Sleek modern tower: in a mostly low-rise neighborhood
- Great views: across Manhattan
- Happening onsite bar: in a happening nightlife area
- Check prices here
The Standard East Village is a modern high-rise hotel that stands out in a neighborhood dominated by lower-rise buildings.
Some will love the fresh, youthful take on accommodation. Others might find the tall tower a bit too out of place in a typically few-story neighborhood.
We ourselves are fans of the low-level, and while we appreciate a bit of quirk, their lip-shaped throw pillows on the beds are not it.
Though it’s tempting, we’d be fools to disparage a great hotel just because we think the pillows look daft.
If you like an NYC classic, historical build, with the feeling you might run into Jeff Goldblum around the next corner, we’ll send you to the Upper East Side.
Fans of newer, sleeker style hotels in vibrant neighborhoods will feel right at home at The Standard.
What are the rooms like?
- Rooms: 146 in total
- Minimalist design: with quirky, colorful accents
- Basic Queens: start at 200 sq ft, Kings double the space
- Suites: with big windows and great views
- See each room in detail here
Rooms are fairly simple, resting heavy on the concept of minimalism to offset ‘whimsical’ touches.
Most everything is white, with the odd wooden furnishing and bright contrasting colors in the floor.
Funky chairs look like they were made from the corpse of Gumby’s horse Pokey.
Our favorite pillows complement whatever colors work through the room. Backed by Hyatt, comfort levels are high, and you shouldn’t have any trouble with the beds.
The most basic option will be a 200 square-foot Queen Single, jumping up to a 400 square-foot King that is worth the upgrade.
Suites include One-bedrooms, Studios, and Corner Kings that might be our personal favorites.
They’re 90% window with super views and most have a bathtub/shower combo.
Every room offers blackout curtains, work areas, independent climate control, robes, Bluetooth speakers, TVs and nice little mini bars.

And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Three dining spots: including bistro, garden café, and flashy bar
- Weekend brunch: and happy hours available
- No Bar: is the late-night cocktail spot
- Facilities: Penthouse, meeting rooms, nearby gym access
Dining occurs in one of three places, starting with a neighborhood-y bar-slash-bistro that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner off of a small but great menu.
They’ve also got Happy Hour and Weekend Brunch set up to go.
The All-Day and Brunch menu can be found in an attached Garden area as well. It’s green, it’s super-cute, it’s the perfect place for a Sunday bloody mary and avocado toast.
No Bar (we aren’t even going to touch that name) is the late-night spot.
It’s a shiny, flashy space that opens for Happy Hour and continues until the DJ set is finished.
Head here for a cocktail before or after you check out the rest of the Village nightlife.
Other facilities include meeting rooms, with a rentable Penthouse that has views you can’t find anywhere else.
A stay at the Standard East Village also includes a complimentary guest pass to a nearby fitness club.
How is the neighborhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Central spot: between East Village and NoHo
- Great access: to subways, taxis, and city attractions
- Walkable: to West Village, Whitney, MoMA and more
The hotel sits on the line between the East Village and NoHo, making it super-central.
It’s not the most charming neighborhood spot, set as it is directly on 3rd Ave.
It’s busy outside so expect some New York City noise out there.
But, in terms of access to city attractions, it’s well situated.
There are cinemas, venues, bars and restaurants all around, it’ll be a challenge not to find something to do.
If you’d like to check out the big names, a taxi should be easy to find. The MTA can take you basically anywhere from here, the nearest stops Astor Place and Bleecker Street.
You’ll be essentially equidistant from the two Manhattan big-hitters, the Whitney and MoMA.
The Upper East Side is about half an hour any way you look at it, with the Empire State Building and Times Square about halfway.
The Whitney, Chelsea, and the West Village are a half-hour walking, with some excellent people watching and great bars to check out.
If you’d like off the island, hop on the aubway over to Brooklyn in just half an hour as well.
And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?
Some things guests liked:
“Absolutely the best stay in NY! A bit pricy but worth every single cent I paid! Excellent staff who actually care about you as a guest of The Standard. Definitely will return!…”
“The staff went above and beyond to make my stay a pleasant experience. From the front desk to the bar staff. I was very impressed!…”
Some things guests didn’t like:
”The restaurant could have had a few more choices for dinner available….”
”Great location. Tiny rooms. Two people in a full bed is not ok. Really only good for one person. Not sure why TV was on a rolling stand that takes up space instead of on the wall….”
