On the north side of San Antonio, TX, near the gorgeous Brackenridge Park, we’ve got yet another remodeled vintage motel.
Unlike the many glam or minimalist renovations, this one goes all-in on the retro. It’s done, however, with a soft touch.
They’ve retained the original neon sign, but this is more like Hitchcock on a sunny day than the bright pinks and oranges we often associate with retro.
The property feels a bit like you wandered into someone’s house party, and they invited you to stay for the summer.
It’s a convivial atmosphere, with a number of onsite activities and acres of park on either side.
If you’re looking for the city bustle, this ain’t it, and we’ll point you towards the many options in Downtown proper.
This one is for the fresh air, for pickleball, for mezcal, or an easy kind of Texas fun.
What are the rooms like?
- Number of rooms: 26 rooms with unique layouts and vintage touches.
- Comfortable design: Calming neutrals and minimal decor with personality.
- Antique furnishings: Many pieces repurposed or vintage to enhance retro vibe.
- Amenities: Lovely linens, Tivoli radios, sound machines, and snacks included.
- See each room in detail here
Your basic room is a Courtyard King, other options include second-floor rooms, rooms with (twin) daybeds, and King Suites with multiple bathrooms and living rooms.
They’re all pretty lovely, featuring a range of calming yet friendly neutrals.
Decor is minimal but well-curated: tiny little touches that give personality without being super flashy.
Many of the furnishings are repurposed or antique, which adds some authenticity to the vintage vibes.
Basic amenities are available, but you might want to double-check they’ll be in the room when you arrive.
Definitely present are lovely linens, Tivoli radios, sound machines and some snacks (!).
What are prices like?
And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Dining: Snacks available onsite, no full kitchen.
- Full bar: plus upstairs mezcal tasting bar.
- Common areas: Patios, lounge, pickleball courts, heated pool, and onsite activities.
Dining is not ideal, as there’s no kitchen. There are some packaged snacks available, and the quality is lovely, but it’s no substitute for a solid breakfast.
The location being what it is, you’ll have to be flexible with eating out. There’s a Starbucks, Shake Shack, and Potbelly’s close by, and a few less chain-y options.
You definitely won’t starve, but if you’re here for the local flavors, you’ll be driving to most dinners.
The opposite is true for drink. There is a full bar in what was the check-in office, which, yay, but the real draw is called UPSTAIRS, and it is (wait for it)…upstairs.
It’s a mezcal tasting bar, basically a couple tables where you sip on neat mezcal and chat with the other People of Good Taste you find around you.
It has all the youthful exclusiveness of that room in the party the hosts keep disappearing into, except this time you’re invited.
There are many common areas, including patios, Pickleball courts, a lounge, and a lovely heated pool.
Most of these are open to members, so be prepared for some local flavor. Guests receive a complimentary hour of pickleball court each day.
How is the neighborhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Location: River Walk-adjacent, north side of San Antonio near Brackenridge Park.
- Leisure spots: Japanese Tea Garden, Brackenridge Park, golf course, and Botanical Garden.
- City access: Downtown attractions within 10 minutes by car.
- Nearby sights: San Antonio Missions Historical Park, Guadalupe River, and Government Canyon State Parks.
As previously mentioned, this is not the location for an easy jaunt in the heart of San Antonio.
It is fantastic for leisure and recreation. Brackenridge Park and the attached golf course are in walking distance, with the Japanese Tea Garden and the Zoo on the north end.
More golf and the Botanical Garden sit to the east, a 20-minute walk or a 5-minute drive.
Downtown is less than 10 minutes by car. Once there, it’s fairly walkable, with the River Walk making even the unreasonably lengthy strolls enjoyable.
Check out historical spots like La Villita or, of course, the Alamo. Artsy fold can enjoy the San Antonio Museum of Art or Hopscotch contemporary artpsace.
One more-or-less walkable spot is the Pearl district, an area with the hip credentials to rival even your motel’s semi-secret mezcal table. It’s not a pretty way, but it’s less than half an hour.
Once you get there you can explore the stylish boutiques, drink at the swanky bars, or sip a coffee and people watch.
Since you’re likely to have a car, you’ll want to check out the nearby natural and historical gems.
The San Antonio Missions Historical Park is a gorgeous architectural adventure, just 20 minutes away.
Guadalupe River and Government Canyon State Parks are both under an hour from the city, great places to get out into nature.
And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?
Some things guests liked:
“The aesthetic was a WHOLE vibe!!! And very attentive and friendly staff!!! Overall great stay!!..”
“Very unique property that my wife and I were led to by the reviews of past guests. Property has a very retro and unique feel. Staff was excellent. Drinks at the bar were great. Our room was clean. The bathroom hand soaps, body washes, etc. were great. There’s music during the day and peace and quiet at night. The vibe and grounds of the property make the absence of a tv in the room a non factor. The hotel is positioned a short drive from downtown attractions. I would absolutely stay here again and refer this property to others….”
Some things guests didn’t like:
”Very small bathroom….”
”The shower tile paint was peeling and no television in room….”
