The historic Schuster Mansion B&B, in the western part of Milwaukee might be a bit out of the way, but it’s perfect if you want to feel cozy and taken care of.
The neighborhood is full of stately homes with verdant lawns and grand entrances (many of them also B&Bs), but Schuster Mansion definitely feels like the king.
The 1891 bright red brick and terracotta residence definitely stands out, with turret-like elements, plenty of archways, and impeccably managed grounds.
Of course, it’s the indoors you’ll really want to get a look at. The B&B hosts conduct tours of the space, which we recommend not missing.
You can wander on your own, but knowing the context to the different molded ceilings, antiques, and stained-glass makes a difference.
There’s a serious effort to balance a deep respect for the building with the demands of modern accommodation.
It’s worth taking this into account if you like your historical mansions fully modernized, but we love the clear desire to maintain as many original elements as they can.
The beauty of the house, plus the knowledgeable and friendly innkeepers, is more than enough to make a stay here worth it.
What are the rooms like?
- Elegant & thematic: 7 rooms and suites, each with plush antiques, original features & distinct decor.
- Variety: Rooms with shared baths, suites with balconies and sitting areas; most have bathtubs.
- Amenities: TVs with streaming and seating areas in every room.
- See each room in detail here
Rooms are decked out. Minimalists, stay away, this is a place for someone who thinks more damask is a given.
Accommodation is divided into rooms and suites, with some of the rooms sharing bathrooms. If this is a big no for you, never fear. There are options.
If you’re alright with it, the two rooms booked at the same time would make an excellent suite, with a claw tub and gorgeous views of the garden.
Suites all have sitting areas, both large and small, and other extra amenities like balconies. And almost every room has a bathtub.
The decor is historical, a collection of plush textiles, antique furnishings, and even some original elements from the turn of the century.
The vibe varies greatly between each room, almost like they’re working on themes.
The Prairie Sky room is a burst of blue, while the Lone Star room features every bit of cowboy paraphernalia you might want.
We like the Serenity Suite ourselves, even if it’s threatening to be too extra. The bathtub nook’s stained-glass window and dark blue tile work are definitely something to admire.
All of them include TVs with streaming capabilities and some kind of seating.
What are prices like?
And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Breakfast & tea: Included in standard stays, served in charming dining areas with lace and chandeliers.
- Optional upgrades: Levels of service allow discounts for fewer amenities if desired.
- Extras: House tours, concierge services, in-room coffee/tea.
The B&B has a ‘levels of service’ scheme that may appeal to some travelers. It offers money off a reservation that forgoes certain amenities.
The way we see it, if we’re in a historic inn, there’s not much that’s going to make us want to skip the luxuries.
A typical stay includes breakfast and afternoon tea, served in the dining area alongside a bunch of lace, a superb teapot collection, and even a cheeky chandelier.
There are opportunities to join the publicly offered tea services as well, many of which include a house tour.
Of course, if you don’t want to book tea, the standard room rate includes a tour of the house.
It also includes concierge services and morning coffee/tea/beverages brought to the room. Like we said, this one just makes the most sense.
If you crave a discount, you can opt for just breakfast or no breakfast at all.
It might make sense if you were just stopping in for a night, but in a pretty quiet residential neighborhood, you’re probably not going to find a better breakfast anywhere close by.
How is the neighborhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Quiet & residential: Not central; a car is recommended for exploring Milwaukee.
- Nearby attractions: Third Ward, Westown, Public Museum, Discovery Center, lakefront, Milwaukee Art Museum.
- Quick drives: 6–10 minutes to main tourist spots, 5 minutes to river walk.
The location is a bit of a drawback. The neighborhood is quiet, but super residential and can be a bit rough around the edges.
There are a few other B&Bs around, but in general, it’s not a go-to spot for tourists. So if you want to bop around Milwaukee, Wisconsin you’re going to want a car.
Once you manage that, nothing’s too far away. It’s less than 10 minutes to the historic Third Ward for example, with its creative atmosphere and upscale cuisine.
If you’re more interested in downtown bustle, Westown and the Public Museum, it’s only a 6-minute drive.
The Discovery Center and lakefront are 10 minutes from the B&B, with plenty of waterfront fun to be had.
The Milwaukee Art Museum is also nearby.
If you want something a little more local and chilled, head to the Lakefront Brewery for a brew with some serious riverside cool.
