Tucked off of Route 9 next to the gorgeous Schroon Lake, this boutique hotel and lodge is the perfect place for some serious nature time.
A small collection of buildings, headed by a Main Lodge, welcome you to a large property with a long history of hospitality.
The original property, the Brown Swan Lodge, has undergone a series of additions, renovations and reinventions over the years.
One small, sweet 1919 clapboard building has grown tremendously into the welcoming encampment you find today.
The original focus of the resort has also changed. Originally a place focused on restful calm, the new Lodge makes a concerted effort to keep you entertained.
You’ll find an impressive array of activities here for all ages.
What are the rooms like?
- 116 rooms: across the main lodge, chalets, cabins, and glamping tents.
- Wide variety: from swanky Lakeview Chalets to rustic cabins.
- Comfort mix: with king beds, queens, and some twin bunks.
- Modern amenities: include outdoor spaces, desks, coffee makers, and Votary bath products.

Be as close, or as far, from a camping trip as you choose with a huge variety of accommodation options.
Indoor kitties can enjoy a swanky stay in a Lakeview Chalet or a cozy guestroom, while outdoorsy guests will love the seasonal glamping tents.
Most of the options feature king-size beds, with a few offering queens and twin bunks.
The style is definitely camp house, with a West Lodge and cabins with friendly wood-forward decor and some unique vintage prints.
The rooms in the main building feature rich accent walls and an interesting arrangement of antlers mounted on ceramic heads.
The vision is there, but with windowpane patterned headboards and leather armchairs, the end result is a bit ‘hunting lodge you made in The Sims’.
The West Lodge, Cabins and Chalets, are a more appealing ‘your rich best friend’s lake house’ kind of comfort.
Most rooms have some kind of outdoor area (balcony, patio, deck), desk space, coffee makers, seating areas, mini-fridges, and shower/bathtub combos.
Bathrooms are stocked with lovely Votary bath products.

And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Lakeside perks: include a private beach, marina, and docks.
- Outdoor fun: with lawn games, mini golf, and lake tubing.
- Indoor amenities: such as a pool, fitness center, and game room.
- Farm-to-table dining: at the Brown Swan restaurant.
- Casual eats: at The Tavern and lounge-style bites at the Bevy.
The nice thing about these remote mountain resorts is the lengths they go to to entertain guests.
At the Lodge at Schroon Lake, you have a host of outdoor activities to enjoy and a guests-only lakeside beach.
There you can lounge on the deck, grab your boat from the private marina, or simply jump off the docks into the sparkling water.
Think lawn games and mini golf after lunch, followed by a relaxed float in the lake with a tube and a beer.
Indoors, you’ll enjoy a heated pool, game room, fitness center and a choice of dining options that can appeal to all.
The Brown Swan is a lovely farm-to-table serving up hearty mountain cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
The Tavern is a bit more casual, with a pub menu and brews from nearby Paradox Brewery.
The Bevy, in the lounge, offers pizza and a small-plates menu.
How is the neighborhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Small town: with a country store, pharmacy, and simple dining.
- Local brewery: Paradox Brewery is just up the road.
- Adirondack setting: between Hoffman Notch and Pharoah Wilderness.
- Outdoor exploration: with hiking, lakes, and scenic drives.
- Cultural spots: include Rustic Furniture Studio and Seagle Festival Theater.
Schroon Lake is one of many trailing off the bottom edge of Lake Champlain, not far from the Upstate New York/Vermont border.
The town is your typical mountain resort main drag with a couple of restaurants, a country store, a pharmacy, and a single salon.
It’s cute, but not the place to go out partying for the night. The spot is more of a ‘toast marshmallows on the resort campfire’ at night than a ‘hit the clubs’ kind of vibe.
You do have Paradox Brewery just up the road, open until 8 or 9, if you want a bit of a bar atmosphere outside the hotel.
The daytime, unsurprisingly, is the time to explore the surrounding area, part of the broader Adirondacks Mountains region.
Sandwiched between Hoffman Notch and the Pharoah Wilderness Area, there is no shortage of gorgeous nature to enjoy, and we recommend taking at least one day off the hotel campus to see it.
If you’re dying for some local culture, head down the road to Barry Gregson’s Rustic Furniture Studio or the Seagle Festival Theater, which presents a series of operas, musicals and other performances each summer.
And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?
Some things guests liked:
“The bedroom was very comfortable. Shower had good water pressure. The property is beautiful! Schroon Lake is so pretty. The staff are wonderful people!…”
”Everything you need is on site and you’re walking distance into town. The facilities were exceptional and I’d love to come back here with a bigger group for a family reunion!…”
Some things guests didn’t like:
”The shower room was tiny which was disappointing. Room facilities i.e coffee/tea could have been better….”
“The pet friendly portion of the hotel was in need of some attention. The doors to rooms had chipped paint. The table in our room had chips on it. In my opinion it could use some more upkeep. Other than those little things it was perfect!!!…”
