This boutique hotel is a laid-back, sumptuously decorated turn-of-the-century mansion in Galveston’s Historic District.
As a historic property, expect personality, like uneven floors and interestingly placed windows. Besides these, the property is done up in modern comfort.
The house itself is one of the surviving structures from the famous Great Storm of 1900, making it a piece of history itself.
It’s surrounded on all sides by other historical gems, the perfect base for Galveston’s cultural charms.
Staff are a nice balance of available and out of the way, though if you like to feel 24/7 spoiled, you might want to check out other options.
What are the rooms like?
- Number of rooms: 6
- Unique rooms: no two rooms are the same
- Historic experience: with 1890s charm preserved
- Antique beds and decor: with modern comforts
- Queen and king beds:, some rooms sleep 4, desk in Heidelberg Suite
- Consistent amenities: including high-quality linens, toiletries, and large TVs
- See all the rooms in detail here
We say this often: as a historic property, no two rooms here are the same.
The mansion was originally a 6-room affair, meaning renovations have never gutted the place. You’re still getting the authentic 1890s inn experience.
The decor is less authentic, but it manages to update the comforts to modern without sacrificing the historical vibes, in our opinion.
Beds are gorgeous antiques, as are some of the mirrors and lamps.
Textiles are squeaky-clean and not remotely old, but well-selected to fit into the decor. Soaring curtains give each room a pronounced elegance.
Most rooms feature queen and king beds, with the Stuttgart Room able to sleep 4. The Heidelberg Suite has a desk perfect for those traveling for work.
Your choice is entirely based on your own preferences, the high-quality linens, toiletries and large TVs are consistent throughout.

And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- No onsite restaurant: but hosts provide recommendations
- Fully equipped kitchen: for guest use
- Communal spaces: for socializing or relaxing
- Small library: with historical Galveston works
The food is as you like it, literally. There is no restaurant onsite, though the hosts are more than happy to recommend all their favorites.
What there is though is a fully equipped kitchen ready for your culinary magic.
It can be a fun opportunity to take advantage of the fish markets or maybe just keep a tub of yogurt in the fridge.
Besides the kitchen, there are other communal spaces where you’ll be able to meet other guests, enjoy a glass of wine, or curl up with your favorite Sarah J. Maas.
There is also a small library with a nice selection of historical works about Galveston, if TikTok fairy fiction is not your genre.

We’re not sure if you’ve heard this, but Texas is big.
So big, in fact, that the types of vacations you can find are many and varied. Galveston is known to be for the beach bums.
It’s not the best beach in the world, or reportedly even in Texas, but the combination of sandy fun, historical flair, and island vibes makes it a shoo-in for tourism.
The 1890 Freeman House is perfectly situated to take advantage of all the city’s charms.
Stewart and Porretto Beach are about a 25-minute walk, right near the Galveston Jetty and Seawall Urban Park.
They’re all excellent places to enjoy an easy walk. Drive out to East Beach if you want something a little less urban.
It’s near the East Island Lagoon, where there’s a small nature preserve that lets you see a bit of the wetlands.
When you’ve had enough of the sand, check out Galveston’s many other attractions.
The Island ferry is a great option, with frequent dolphin sightings.
People with kids will want to check out Moody Gardens amusement park, a 15-minute drive from the inn.
For history, there are plenty of options. The Strand is a darling historic street where you can simply wander.
It is close to the Railroad Museum, less than a 10-minute walk from the hotel.
Continue that walk another 5-ish minutes to the Galveston Channel, where you’ll find Ocean Star Oil Rig Museum.
It’s also great for boatwatching.
Keeping going to the Elissa Tall Ship, an active sailing ship. Then pop on over the Channel to Seawolf Park, where you’ll find a landlocked submarine.
Food and drink is available all around, with some local breweries, popular shrimp places, and many more. Check with the inn for recommendations.
And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?
Some things guests liked:
“What a lovely stay we had! We met friends here and stayed the night before our cruise. Our host was amazing, so friendly and accommodating! We loved being able to sit in the living room visiting with our friends and our host….”
“Love this place for so many reasons. This was my 4th stay and the first with my husband. He loved it. Probably the cleanest, most elegant home we’re stayed in. So quiet and peaceful. The period furniture and decor is so lovely. The kitchen is beautiful and well appointed . We really enjoyed sitting on the balcony with a glass of wine at night and our coffee in the morning. The location is also perfect. We will be back!…”
Some things guests didn’t like:
”It’s an old house so showers were a little cooler and water pressure not great but would never stop us from staying again….”
”Our only suggestion would be to 1) provide caffeine-free coffee in addition to caffeinated versions (many people like coffee but can’t do caffeine) and 2), provide artificial sweeteners as alternatives….”
