The Memphian is a swank boutique hotel that catches the eye near Memphis’ newly revitalized Overton Square.
It looms a bit in context, with the rest of the neighborhood a bit smaller in scale. But, this makes it feel grand, and anyone who likes to make an entrance will probably enjoy it.
It’s part of Marriott’s Tribute Portfolio of independent hotels, meaning you can trust their standards of comfort.
The atmosphere is of contemporary luxury but with a solid dose of bold quirk.
Plush couches in the onsite bar sit under one-of-a-kind artworks and multicolored chandeliers.
If you like your opulence straightforward, golds and whites, this might not be the spot.
If, though, you appreciate a bit of personality amid your upscale hospitality, The Memphian is the place.

And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Dining: Complicated Pilgrim for New American cuisine, Tiger and Peacock bar for cocktails and tapas.
- Menu highlights: Salads, flatbreads, snacks, and a curated cocktail and wine list.
- Facilities: Onsite boutique, 24-hour fitness center for guests.
The lobby-level restaurant is called the Complicated Pilgrim, and it’s open all day, including a happy hour.
The cuisine is regional, New American fare complemented by a lengthy cocktail list and a nice selection of wines.
The real charmer, though, is probably Tiger and Peacock. It’s the plush hotel bar with superb views and eccentric decor that really makes the personality of the hotel.
You won’t find a giant menu of large meals; we’re talking cocktails and tapas, mostly.
Salads, flatbreads and a nice selection of snacks will fill up the corners, but this is a place to gossip and sip more than have a full-on meal.
For non-culinary adventures within the hotel, there’s an onsite boutique and a 24-hour fitness center for guests to use.
How is the neighborhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Location: Midtown Memphis, Overton Square.
- Nearby: Food, bars, shopping, multiple theaters, Overton Park, Memphis Zoo, Art Museum.
- A short drive away: Beale Street Entertainment District, South Main, National Civil Rights Museum, & Graceland.
You’ll find food, drink, and some excellent shopping nearby here, and multiple theaters in walking distance of the hotel.
Overton Park, home to the Memphis Zoo and the art museum, is a 20-minute walk north.
The Children’s Museum and the Museum of Science and History are both in the general area, but the walk is much less charming, and we’d recommend wheels.
You’ll also probably want a car to get downtown, though it’s easy to park and walk once you get there.
The drive to the Beale Street Entertainment District is an easy 12 minutes. It’s a pedestrian-friendly space lined with places to eat, drink and be merry.
Other neighborhoods, like the artsy, cultural South Main, are worth a visit as well.
The National Civil Rights Museum is a 15-minute drive near the Blues Hall of Fame and plenty of other art spaces. With plenty of bars and restaurants nearby, it’s an easy place to spend a day.
If you’re set on Graceland, it’s just a 15-minute drive south.
