In our opinion, Manhattan’s Upper West Side doesn’t get the attention it deserves. If you’re not sure what we mean, The Wallace can help you with that.
If you are sure, then you’ll know this hotel is worth a look.
It’s nothing mind-blowing in terms of ambiance. We’ve got a lot of dark wood in the common areas, and a lot of white with bold accents in the rooms.
But who wants a reinvented wheel, anyway? The Wallace has all the hallmarks of classic luxury, beautifully executed.
The exterior oozes New York Art Deco glamour, though the interior is much more contemporary.
It’s a nice, intimate space with less than 150 rooms, allowing for good service and a refreshingly friendly atmosphere.
What are the rooms like?
- Number of rooms: 124 total.
- Minimalist design: Mostly white, with pops of color in Deluxe rooms and Suites.
- Good sizes: Standard rooms ~250 sq ft, suites up to 580 sq ft.
- Amenities: Workspace, minibar, Nespresso, 4K TVs, robes, slippers.

Rooms are probably our least favorite element. They offer absolutely nothing offensive, unless you’re tired of the all-white take on minimalism (read: we are).
We do like the periwinkle and lupine colored accent chairs in the Deluxe rooms and Suites.
They add a super-chic grandmother kind of vibe. Not your fresh-based cookies kind of grandmother, the “let’s buy you a new outfit for the ballet” kind.
The others, King Singles and Queen Singles and Doubles, are perfectly serviceable, if not super exciting.
They’re a solid size for a New York hotel, around 250 square feet, but other options verge on roomy.
If it’s in budget, we’d go for a Deluxe King or One-bedroom Suite for the most charm. They get up to 580 square feet, more than enough room to feel well taken care of.
Whatever you choose, you’ll enjoy a workspace, mini bar, mini fridge, Nespresso machine, and a 4K TV coming in just under 50 inches.
Hotel robes, slippers and umbrellas will make every part of your day easy and cozy.
What are prices like?
And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Dining: Limited, but includes Wallace Lounge with cocktails, small plates, and caviar.
- Atmosphere: Sultry and cozy, great for pre-dinner drinks.
- Facilities: Fitness center with Peloton, spaces for events and meetings.
Dining is simple, though it might not be sufficient for our big eaters or long-term stays.
It’s not a huge issue, in our opinion. If you’re planning to stick to a single restaurant in all of New York City, we honestly don’t know what to tell you.
Yet! The Wallace Lounge is the perfect place for a pre-dinner cocktail, and that menu can keep you going for a little while. Bonus if you like scotch.
If you do get peckish, there’s a sophisticated menu of small plates, cheeses, and caviar.
The vibe is sultry and cozy, a perfect place to steel yourself for the excitement of Midtown.
There is a fitness center on site as well, not super large but serviceable and Peloton-equipped. There’s space for both events and business meetings as well.
How is the neighborhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Location: Upper West Side, quieter than Midtown.
- Nearby: Hudson River Greenway (10 min), Central Park and museums (10 min).
- Family-friendly: Natural History Museum and Children’s Museum within walking distance.
- Transport: Subway 5 min walk, Midtown and West Village 10–15 min by car.
The Upper West Side is not as stacked with classic sightseeing opportunities as Midtown or even the Upper East Side.
Yet it sits right on the north side of Broadway (but not the insane busy part of it), making for easy access to the center.
And it’s easy to relax here. The Hudson River Greenway is a 10-minute walk, a relatively rare perk that’s a bit fussy to get to from anywhere else.
Central Park, in the other direction, is also just 10 minutes on foot. You’ll enter right near the American Museum of Natural History, Strawberry Fields, and Belvedere Castle.
Okay, we were underselling the sightseeing. The Children’s Museum will also be within walking distance.
Combined with Natural History, it’s the perfect area for the little ones.
Other areas are super accessible. The nearest subway stop is just 5 minutes on foot, and taxis shouldn’t be hard to find.
The West Village is a 15-minute drive; MoMA, Times Square, Rockefeller, and the rest of Midtown is just 10.
And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?

”Please put real mugs or cups and saucers for coffee and real glasses in the bathroom. Everything was so nice and that would make it a notch above the rest. Overall, excellent….”
