Those of us outside of The City don’t really hear as much about NoMad as we do the Upper East Side, the Village, or even Williamsburg.
Yet, this greenery-filled hotel in the neighborhood north of Madison Square is so charming, and popular with locals as well as guests, we couldn’t leave it off our list.
It’s truly not a bad area for exploring Manhattan at all, but the location isn’t the sticking point here.
MADE Hotel is a bright, contemporary design hotel, the likes of which are not as easy to find as you might think.
Manhattan is home to many a hotel built from a Golden Age Art Deco wonder, even more skyscrapers with superb views.
And yet, this slightly post-industrial space has a certain organic luxury quality to it that’s hard to match.
Debajo, its Spanish bar and restaurant, and its rooftop bar, are just as popular with locals as guests. Always a good sign too.
What are the rooms like?
- Number of rooms: 112
- Design: Light, open, and nature-inspired interiors.
- Room types: Standard rooms, larger 200+ sq ft rooms, Master Suite, rooms with balconies.
- Amenities: Plush beds, linens, large TVs, multi-format radios, robes, soaking tubs in some rooms.
- See each room in detail here
Rooms are beautifully designed to take advantage of New York size standards while still feeling open and light.
Superbly comfortable mattresses are propped up in little wooden platforms, surrounded by shelving and soft little lights.
Once you get into the larger rooms, 200 square feet plus, beds turn into real beds, but the nature-forward atmosphere carries through.
Blankets are either patchwork or indigo, curtains a kind of bone-white that add light without feeling stark.
Each room also has at least one wall of windows, so the natural light is all yours.
The Master Suite is settled on a corner for extra light, and there are options with balconies as well. Soaking tubs and Juliet balconies are just a few other amenities you can find within room options.
Whatever you choose, you’ll get a top-notch bed with plush linens, large TVs, multi-format radios, robes and tea kettles on request.
What are prices like?
And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Café: Paper — neighborhood vibe, lab-grown redwood interior, great coffee & tea.
- Restaurant: Debajo — Spanish-inspired, seasonal menu, heated/covered outdoor seating.
- Bar: Lobby Bar — low lighting, leather seats, sultry atmosphere.
- Rooftop: Good Behavior — bar/restaurant/café/garden, indoor/outdoor seating, views, young & fresh vibe.
- Guests-only patio: Second-floor outdoor space with extended plant program.
With a Williamsburg naturalist’s dream of a café downstairs, you probably don’t want to bother with in-room coffee anyway.
All the dining options have a bit of a hippie vibe, but the tree hugging non-profit type rather than the crystal-hawking hula hoopers.
Our one critique is the lack of wellness services — there is a limited agreement with a local gym, which is unadvertised and unlikely to satisfy our fit friends.
How is the neighborhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Mixed-use area: Residential and business mix, fewer mom-and-pop restaurants but reliable amenities.
- Central Manhattan: Between Empire State, Flatiron, Madison Square Garden.
- Nearby attractions: MoMA, Central Park, Times Square, Broadway, Lower Manhattan — all easily accessible.
- Transit: 28 Street MTA station a 1–2 minute walk; half-hour subway to Brooklyn.
NoMad is not much of a local neighborhood feel, though it is undeniably pleasant.
It’s a mix of residential and business space that makes a decent combination of excellent food and reliable amenities.
For a visitor, though, the proximity to Manhattan’s many attraction is a huge benefit.
You’ll be in a little triangle between Empire State, Flatiron, and Madison Square Garden, to start.
MoMA is a half-hour walk, 15-minute subway, 10-minute cab, and Central Park will be just a bit more.
Times Square and Broadway are all about the same distance, with different routes.
The real benefit, though, is that Lower Manhattan is equally convenient.
The Village is the same distance as MoMA, Chelsea is decidedly walkable, and SoHo is almost the same.
All of this, and the half-hour subway to Brooklyn, is done from the 28 Street MTA station, just a minute or two’s walk from the hotel.
And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?
Some things guests liked:
“We loved our stay! The hotel is beautiful, well-situated in Manhattan and I love that there aren’t carpets in the rooms. The bed was comfortable – not too soft or too firm. The staff were wonderful and the rooftop bar was lovely….”
“We had a super return visit to Made – after a family visit from Ireland last year. The staff were excellent, so friendly and kind. Nothing was an issue and all members of staff we met around the hotel were so helpful. We were thrilled to receive a room upgrade & bottle of bubbles as return guests. We look forward to coming back soon!…”
Some things guests didn’t like:
”The rooms were really small for what we paid. And it was all in all very dark. Older people with vision problems may want to stay elsewhere….”
”Lots of external noise from music venue across the road….”
