It is universally acknowledged that a North Eastern hotelier in possession of investment capital must be in want of an 18th-19th century building requiring extensive renovation.
This 4-building Kingston NY boutique hotel is further proof.
The factory-lined Hudson River is, of course, an absolute playground for renovation-happy hospitality experts, but Hotel Kinsley is special in that its buildings are not exclusively red-brick factory types.
The residence comprises four different buildings offering a lively collection of comfortable and charming spaces.
The main house was originally a bank, now a stately tan stone affair with weird acoustics and a gorgeous front desk area situated inside the former vault.
Other lodgings are situated in a limestone delight originally built in the 1600s, on the top floors of an 1870s mercantile building now housing a chic women’s clothing boutique, and a Queen Anne-style ‘cottage’ built around an early 18th-century stone frame.
The entire collection is a delightful tribute to the extensive history of the area, with the added benefits of upscale furnishings, charming decor and a cute town to explore.

‘Each room is unique,’ can be a tired refrain, but it’s more relevant here than anywhere.
With Hotel Kinsley there’s variation between buildings, rooms and common areas.
We can say, however, that there’s a through line of well-thought-out luxuries.
Turkish carpets cover most of the floors, there’s plenty of natural wood in the flooring and the furniture, and the owners have done their best to incorporate original elements of each building into every room.
Most bathrooms feature gleaming Carrara tile and chic metal fixtures.
Hotel Kinsley’s main building, on Wall Street, offers King Rooms, Queen Doubles and a roomy suite with dreamy green paneling and a soaking tub.
The historical exterior of Pearl Street encases brand-new King and Queen rooms with extensive seating, and a two-bedroom suite.
Fair Street is a bit more contemporary, with sweet patterns filling King, Queen and Double Queen rooms.
John Street features the property’s most luxurious suite, three rooms with a private patio and a fireplace. Smaller Queen Rooms fill out the space.

Some things guests didn’t like:
”It was an exceptional property. Clean, comfortable and modern. What was untenable was the parking. I was told it was a block away when, in fact it was a three block walk…..”
”Nothing was open nearby of any value. Location is in the heart of the stockade district but not much to see. Hotel had a weird entrance and no coffee or breakfast. Elevator did not work and we were on the third floor. Room was clean and a/c worked fine…..”
