Anyone with a penchant for medieval fantasy will understand the allure of a cozy boutique hotel and tavern, but will be rightfully wary at the thought of medieval facilities.
Luckily, this Hudson, NY inn has nailed the updated version.
Equal parts Prancing Pony and ROOST apart hotel, Wm. Farmer and Sons comprises three sweet side-by-side residences.
Guest rooms and suites are available for long and short-term rental.
The main building is connected to the Tavern, a lovely spot for locals and guests alike to congregate.
In a situation like this it must be tempting to go all-in with antique walnut bartops, velvet curtains, and heavy four-posters, but the owners have resisted admirably.
Instead, the barroom is full of chic glass, black metals and light wood that ooze New American smart-casual.
Guest areas at Wm. Farmer and Sons are a charming collection of cozy wools, eclectic antiques and modern furnishings.

Guest rooms and suites are each completely unique, vaguely categorized by building.
Despite the fresh decor and contemporary feeling, it is still a historical house and many rooms are on the smaller side.
You’ll stay in either the Merchant House, with the best garden access; the William Farmer, the main building connected to the tavern; or the Annex Suites, which are perfect for longer stays or bigger groups.
Most rooms at Wm. Farmer and Sons have a relaxing, modern country-estate style with clean white walls, well-curated original paintings and quirky antiques.
The Annex Rooms’ larger suites more modern, with a bit more of an Elle Decor vibe than Better Homes & Gardens.
Rooms have a variety of king and queen beds, mini fridges, and SmartTVs. Many offer extras like private balconies, Tivoli radios, lovely mountain views, fireplaces, and full bathtubs.
Dogs are allowed in some lodgings and not others, so be sure to check with the hotel before booking if you travel with a direwolf.

- Dining: barroom open to locals with Oyster Happy Hour and updated country classics.
- Café and rum room: Mercantile serves coffee by day, cocktails by night.
- Event spaces: three facilities for 15-50 people, catered by hotel’s kitchen, some with private entrances.
Obviously, the easiest spot for food is the barroom. Because it is open to locals as well, you’re encouraged to make reservations when you want to eat there.
It’s a dinner spot, with a killer Oyster Happy Hour and a spot-on menu of updated country classics. It’s not the place to be on a diet, though they do have salad options.
The real standouts are hearty and flavorful, there to keep you warm in the Upstate weather.
The Mercantile serves as a daytime café, where you can wake up with a nice cup of joe. A
t night, it turns rum room, ready for you to sip on some cocktails and wait for the river pirates to show up.
There are three lovely facilities available for private events. They can host anywhere from 15 to 50 people, are catered by the hotel’s excellent kitchen.

And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?
Some things guests liked:

“Lovely building restored to a high standard and design – contemporary but in keeping with the era. The location was excellent, being close to restaurants on the main street as well as very convenient for catching the train after we left……”
Some things guests didn’t like:
”The claw foot tub, while quaint was a tall order to climb into and out of and the tub controls for the rain shower was a battle to get to work….”
”They never answer the phone. Its a keyless hotel. no one to take your bags or help you. you are paying a lot and the service is inferior for a hotel at that price point….”
