TL;DR
- Retro charm: 80s glam decor with a time-capsule vibe.
- Proven comfort: Decades of consistent service and upkeep.
- Spacious feel: Large rooms with functional amenities.

The Plaza Resort Club is a Reno fixture that feels like it’s been there for decades. Which, of course, it has.
However, while many other hotels might change hands, do renovations, redecorate, etc., there’s none of that here.
It’s a superbly reassuring kind of confidence, this kinda outdated hotel that is clearly not interested in figuring out what the cool kids are doing these days.
The styling is not hipster, it’s not cottage-core, it’s mostly an 80s glam, like Prince is still filming the ‘Little Red Corvette’ music video in one of the suites.
And it’s great. You might expect things to be a bit run-down, but the retro has stayed retro without losing any sense of cleanliness, or functionality.
If you like a good time capsule, great service, and comfort that’s been proving itself for decades, we’re sending you here.
What are the rooms like?
- Number of rooms: 103 total, all spacious at 400+ sq ft.
- Room types: King Singles, Queen Doubles, and Regal Kings with extras.
- Views: Higher floors offer great city panoramas.
- Amenities: TVs, fridges, microwaves, dining space, and sofa beds.
- See each room in detail here
Rooms are spacious, the smallest coming in at over 400 square feet. We’re looking at King Singles, Queen Doubles, and ‘Regal’ Kings with kitchenettes and jetted tubs.
The decor, as previously mentioned, is dated. The wood texturing is intense, the bed skirts satiny, the whole vibe simply shiny.
That being said, it’s all super comfy, and it’s more of a quirk than a flaw.
The higher up you are, the better, with some truly spectacular views from the top floors.
Whatever room you choose, you’ll find TVs, dining areas, fridges, microwaves, and coffee machines. King Rooms have fold-out sofa beds.

And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Onsite dining: Thirsty’s restaurant serves breakfast and has an evening bar.
- Casual options: Snacks, beer, and wine available at the front desk.
- Leisure: Guest Lounge with billiards and free hot drinks.
- Wellness: Fitness center and heated atrium pool upstairs.
There’s an onsite restaurant, Thirsty’s (how could we not love this hotel?!) with breakfast until 11 and a bar that opens at 5 pm.
Breakfast is easy fare of coffee, tea, egg sandwiches, smoothies, pastries, and morning cocktails.
The bar has skilled bartenders and some excellent local beer options if you’re not up for Reno’s 3-hour-tour of a brewery cruise.
There’s also a spot to grab beer, wine and snacks to go by the front desk.
The Guest Lounge is a nice spot to soak up a bit more 80s luxury, with a billiard table and complimentary coffee, tea, and hot chocolate.
They’ve also got a fitness center for our more active friends, plus a heated pool in a lovely atrium space on the upper floor.
How is the neighborhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Riverside setting: Located on Reno’s Riverwalk near Wingfield Park.
- Downtown core: Surrounded by restaurants, breweries, and shops.
- Culture & outdoors: Museums, Virginia City, Hunter Creek, and Tahoe within reach.
There’s a bit of Downtown Reno called the ‘Riverwalk’ district, and this is right on it.
What does it mean? It means the Truckee is right at your fingertips. The cute little island of Wingfield Park is a 5-minute walk, and you can walk the riverside path for hours.
You’re also in the heart of Reno’s hotel area, the easy, walkable part of Downtown. There are many restaurants, breweries, cafes and shops to wander around.
Even the less developed nearby areas have many stylish distilleries, breweries, etc., waiting to be explored.
It’s not the most enjoyable place to walk everywhere, but it’s not difficult, and there are plenty of rideshares as well.
The Nevada Museum of Art and the Discovery center are on the other side of the river, in Midtown. It’s a half-hour walk or a 7-minute drive.
Staying in Reno is a great way to get to know the surrounding area as well. If you like the Western vibes, Virginia City is an old-timey town with a lot of 19th-century architecture and a historical vibe.
Hiking is another big hit, check out the nearby Hunter Creek for some nice trails. Galena Creek is a little further out, with nice, dog-friendly trails.
Of course, there’s always Tahoe. A trip to the lake is a perfect day trip, whether you want to hike, hang, or marvel at multi-million dollar homes.
And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?
Some things guests liked:
“The rooms were really spacious, beautifully furnished and very clean. In the downtown but slightly away from casino hotels, which was a big plus while traveling with kids….”
“We had a fantastic stay! Location was good – dinner spots within walking distance. Extra stuff made the stay excellent: the pool, the billiards, coffee in the morning, an updated TV w/ Netflix and cable, fridge etc. Extremely clean rooms/hotel and friendly staff….”
Some things guests didn’t like:
”Outdated decors if I’m that picky…but it doesn’t bother me….”
”I wish the bar inside was open more because we didn’t get a chance to go….”
