This historic house in Grand Rapids Michigan’s Heritage Hill neighborhood offers a relaxed, classic B&B stay in a charming setting.
It’s a 1914 mansion with some lovely old English-style architecture, one that originally belonged to a local refrigerator baron.
It’s a delightful place to be, all rich woods and soft tiles with touches of period-appropriateness to the furniture, but nothing too strict.
Thus, the ambiance stays laid back instead of grand. It gives more rich cookie-giving grandma than rich knuckle-smacking grandma, and this we greatly appreciate.
In other words, more Lady Bertram than Lady Catherine DeBourgh. In still other words, more Rose than Dorothy.
We could go on, but we’ve probably already gone too far.
With the welcoming atmosphere and a surrounding area packed full of historical architecture, it’s the perfect place for a history buff taking some time by the Grand River.
What are the rooms like?
- Number of rooms: 8 total, each unique.
- Varied styles: Each room has its own theme and quirks.
- Modern comfort: Heated floors, plush linens, cozy layouts.
- Highlights: Sir Charles with woodwork, Baroness in servants’ quarters, Knights Quarters with twin beds.
- Note: No elevator, stairs may be difficult for some guests.
- See each room in detail here
As with many historic B&Bs, each room is completely different. Here, you get a range of architectural quirks, original and newly renovated decor.
There are vague themes to each room based on its general vibe, but they all have a similar deft balance of historical and modern comfort.
The Sir Charles, for example, is the spot if you want to admire original woodwork, done up in buttery yellows with a vanity, bath and a king bed.
Baroness is housed in the old servants’ quarters, a secluded space with a king bed, bath/shower, and mini seating area.
The best for friends/siblings is the Knights Quarters, with a two-twin bed option.
Make sure to read the amenities for each space, since they are so variable, but don’t worry about the comfort.
Each room is well-suited to a cozy stay with plush linens and (in almost all rooms) heated floors.
It’s worth noting that there is no elevator, so guests who don’t love stairs will want to make sure their room is on the ground floor.

Note: We have The Leonard at Logan House placed in our Adults Only category, though children over 14 are welcome to stay.
And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Hearty breakfast: Classic B&B spread, well-prepared and plentiful.
- Extra treats: Pastry baskets placed around the property.
- Cozy spaces: Fireplace for winter, patio for warmer months.
- Guest perks: Washer/dryer and free parking available.
We love a good B&B, and this is certainly one of them.
Breakfast is well executed, nothing wholly unexpected, but everything perfectly prepared and plentiful.
It’s eggs, fruit, and plenty of sides to make it special. Think bacon, think blueberry pancakes, strudel, think whatever you want hard enough, and it might just appear.
Even outside breakfast, the owners have conspired to leave baskets of pastries in strategic locations, so anytime you might want a small snack, it’s there for you.
There are common areas to enjoy, including a fireplace for the colder months and an outdoor patio for when it’s warmer.
A guest-friendly washer and dryer and free parking are just the cherries on top.
How is the neighborhood? Anything interesting nearby?

Heritage Hills is by no means the beating heart of the city, and that’s the base of the charm.
We’re talking quiet, brick-laid streets with a notable building around each corner, the perfect place for a relaxed wander around.
There’s not a whole lot in terms of dining, and especially no nightlife, but if you wanted something quiet, it’s perfect.
And even if you didn’t, downtown is not far. The drive will take 5 minutes or less, and the walk is an easy 20-minute stroll.
Once there, there’s the top beer makers, Founders Brewing, the Art Museum, and the Public Museum.
Cross the Grand, and you’ll get to the Public Museum, one of the most popular spots for local history.
The corner of Bridge Street and Stocking Avenue is a good place to start looking for some food and drink.
Gorgeous green space at Fredrick Meijer Gardens is just a 15-minute drive. If you wanted to get out of the city, Saugatuck Dunes State Park and Hoffmaster State Park are both within an hour’s drive.
