TL;DR

- Minimal facilities: Self-check-in, limited on-site services, more about the surroundings than hotel extras.

This unique Grand Rapids Michigan hotel on the west side of the Grand River is a place for the more low key tourists among you.
We love a cute logo, of course, and that might be swaying our opinion. Ultimately, though, if you snag a room here, you’ll feel a bit more like a local than in most places.
It’s an unusual space. The property is available for events, for individual rooms, and as an entire house rental.
As an event space, there are many connections with local vendors that are nice even for the average traveler.
The hosts can easily point you in the direction of a good salon or bakery.
As with many of these mixed-function hotels, on-site amenities and facilities are pretty limited. Check-in is self-service; the hosts are responsive and attentive, but not there.
The vibe in general is laid back and fits well into the cute, unassuming neighborhood. The building is a gorgeous brick number in a cute block of similar buildings.
It’s an area undergoing a Bowie opening track’s worth of changes, and we’re happy the new haunts are keeping the old architecture.
If you like a unique stay and prefer exploring local haunts to dining at the hotel, it’s a great place.
Those who like a hotel for all the accoutrements will want to look elsewhere.

Rooms are all on the second floor. The King Suites set up for a super-comfy stay with an easy, friendly vibe.
With just 5 rooms, a big enough group will absolutely want to snag the whole thing. You can make the space your own and still have your own plush suite.
Each one includes some exposed brick from the building. Half of it is concrete, and while it doesn’t have the same warmth as the red or yellow brick of an old mill, for example, the general effect is nice.
The rest of the space follows the same kind of contemporary post-industrial feel. It’s mostly simple whites and clean-lined furnishings.
There are enough small touches (we love both fuzzy throw pillows and cushy ottomans) to balance personality and simplicity, however.
All rooms include nice, large TVs with Hulu Live, seating areas, and a mini fridge.
Bathrooms are straightforward contemporary comfort, with cute tile in the showers and stylish vanities.
What are prices like?
And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Event focus: First floor is mainly an event space, with charming common areas.
- Extra touches: Back patio, small green yard, and café-style front space.
- Self-catering: Guests can use a Nespresso machine in the shared kitchen.
- Limited amenities: Not much beyond the basics — encourages guests to explore locally.
The first floor is the event space, with a convertible ADA-compliant living space available, if needed.
Most of the common areas are designed for event rentals, meaning they may or may not be at their best for the average guest.
They are quite charming, both the café-like space facing the street and the back patio.
There’s a small green space as well, perfect for a cheeky yard game.
You’ll have access to a Nespresso machine in the common kitchen.
Plenty of windows facing the street mean the natural light in the front room is the perfect place to enjoy a morning brew.
Other than this, you’re on your own. Like we said before, if you wanted to check out the local food and drink scene, it won’t be a problem.

The BlueJay is on Bridge Street, part of a developing neighborhood with some truly lovely old architecture, and some pretty mediocre new buildings.
It’s nice for a walk around; there are plenty of cafés within walking distance for a nice breakfast. And there’s a market right across the street.
You’ll also find bars and restaurants open throughout the day and night. Bridge Street and the area surrounding it are some of the best to enjoy Grand Rapids’ culinary scene.
The Gerald R Ford and Public Museums are the main attraction on this side of the Grand. They’re both around a 15-minute walk, right next to Ah-Nab-Awen Park, where you can enjoy the riverfront.

of GR. If you’re willing to go a couple of hours north, the Manistee River Trail, Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness, and a bunch of North Country Trail sections are located in the Huron-Manistee National Forest.
