Sure, everyone loves an old ship captain’s house full of antiques, linen and wicker deck furniture, but we’re all happy that Edgartown has something a bit more contemporary.
Another gem from Lark Hotels, this funky-chic boutique hotel from the brand’s Edgartown Collection is a breath of fresh air among the salty breezes of Martha’s Vineyard.
There are plenty of places that manage to balance contemporary and historical flair, and we love that The Sydney doesn’t try.
Forget reclaimed wood, white and blue, and antique botanical prints. Here, you’ve got colorfully patterned cushions, funky lounge seating, and some gorgeous abstract color-field prints.
The service is highly lauded, and this friendliness keeps the contemporary vibe from feeling foreign. It’s simply very fresh, surrounded by weather-worn historicism and beachy glamour.
Note: The Sydney is open seasonally, May-October.

The B&B-style accommodation includes the same Edgartown Collection complimentary breakfast as the other hotels.
They are simple yet scrumptious, collections of savory and sweet pastries beside oats and the perfect morning tea or coffee.
The outdoor patio is laid-back but stylish, with colorful seating and some sweet landscaping. It’s the perfect place for a glass of wine from one of the nearby upscale markets.
Lunch and dinner will be outside, as there’s no onsite restaurant. There are plenty of spots in walking distance, and you can check with the personalized concierge for recommendations and reservations.
There are beaches in walking distance, and the hotel is more than happy to provide towels and beach chairs.
How is the neighborhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Edgartown: is posh, quiet, and nature-filled
- Shopping: & art galleries near Main Street
- Other towns: Oak Bluffs for nightlife, Vineyard Haven for quiet
- Transport: bikes, buses, car rentals, ferries
Many things are in walking distance, but beaches and restaurants are definitely a highlight. As Martha’s Vineyard’s rich aunt, Edgartown is the place to be for anything extra posh.
The shopping is some of the best on the island, with a small swarm of art galleries by Main Street and many stylish boutiques.
It’s got historical landmarks as well, with a few parks and a small stretch of beach by the lighthouse.
There are my other beaches to visit, and a wander around the island is strongly recommended. There is a solid bus system, car rentals, and ride-share services.
It’s also a great place for biking, and there are bike rentals less than a five-minute walk from the hotel.
Anyone who wants to socialize and perhaps engage in a bit of frivolity can head to Oak Bluffs, which has a younger, more party-focused reputation.
The other main town, Vineyard Haven, is perfect for those who want to keep it more low-key.
Ferries to Falmouth are accessible in Edgartown; for Woods Hole, Hyannis and Nantucket you’ll want to head to Oak Bluffs.
And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?
Some things guests liked:
“The Sydney staff were very gracious and accommodating. The property is located within easy steps to everything you come to MV for. Lovely appointed rooms with a comfy high-end nautical decor, comfortable beds with nice linens. The continental breakfast offers plenty of healthy choices including fresh fruits….”
“It’s our second time at The Sydney, and like last time, it didn’t disappoint! If you want a relaxing stay, The Sydney definitely offers that! The price you pay is worth it for the rooms and the service. The staff – shoutout to Stefan! – go out of their way to make guests’ stay really special….”
Some things guests didn’t like:
”Because the property is located in the heart of the Edgertown business shops & restaurant’s, it is partially surrounded by two main streets that can get noisy when the bars close or early morning (0500-0700) with garbage trucks and other city vehicles. But, its not a big deal and we would definitely return to The Sydney….”
”Because the hotel is surrounded by beaches, it would be nice to have a washer and dryer room to add to the amenities for customers. That would help when going back and forth to the beach….”
