Downtown Kennebunkport’s set of 19th-century homes turned boutique hotels is more proof that historical elegance and contemporary flair can be a match made in heaven.
Another one of Lark Hotel’s multi-unit historic hotel complexes, each of the four houses was once owned by a sea captain, thus the name.
They served as houses and/or small inns until 2021, when they were combined into one very chic campus.
The houses are named after their former owners, and each is decorated with its own personality.
The styling throughout the property is top-notch.
We don’t know how well the atmosphere of each house corresponds to the historical figure it’s named after, but it’s nice to assume that they all had an eye for interior design.
Add excellent service and a certifiably cute harbor town surrounded by nature walks and beaches, and you’ve got a pretty good thing going on.
What are the rooms like?
- Number of rooms: 45 spread across four houses
- Modern comforts: Smart TVs, fridges, climate control, corkscrew and glasses
- Extra perks: Many with fireplaces and soaking tubs
- Distinct vibes: Each house has its own personality and décor
- See each room in detail here
Each room boasts a luxurious set of amenities, including Smart TVs, mini fridges, individual climate control and the classic Lark corkscrew and wine glasses.
Most, but not exactly all, top it all off with fireplaces and soaking tubs.
As for vibe, each house gets its own. William Jefferds, for example, is a laid-back wanderer type.
The house sparkles in bright white set against warm neutrals and features some really gorgeous architectural moments.
It houses Queens and Kings of all sizes and a handful of Suites, some of which are pet-friendly.
Most rooms are in the main house, but some are tucked into the nearby carriage house.
We imagine James Fairfield as a campy chatterbox, full of rollicking stories from the sea.
The house is filled with an eclectic selection of antique furniture, contemporary paintings, bright colors and bold patterns.
Acton Patterson is the Mr. Darcy of the property. Think subdued elegance seen in rich brown leather, gleaming mahogany, and soft wool blankets.
You’ll choose between Queen and King rooms, with an option to rent the entire house.
Finally, our fearless leader is the opulent, magisterial Nathaniel Lord. The four-posters are carved, the picture frames are gilded, the textiles are elegant and lavish.
Queens, Kings and many a Suite are right at home here.
What are prices like?
And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Dining: Continental breakfast in each house, hot food at Nathaniel Lord
- Common areas: Cozy lounges and spaces in each mansion
- Extras: Complimentary beach chairs and bikes
The Nathaniel Lord Mansion is also home to the dining hall. Every house has a small continental spread each morning, but if you want hot food you’ll have to head to fancy land.
All houses have some common area, though, where you can rest your feet, sip some wine, do whatever you’ve always wanted to do in a mansion.
Once you’re ready to explore you can take advantage of the hotel beach chairs and, perhaps more importantly, bikes.
It’s a nice area to bike around, and a very scenic way to get to the beach.
How is the neighborhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Central location: Right in Kennebunkport’s town center
- Nature nearby: Beaches, reserves, and scenic trails within minutes
- Local charm: Boutiques, seafood, ice cream, and art galleries
- Culture: Museums, historical society, and Bush family summer home views
Staying in the center of Kennebunkport is a great idea for many reasons. One is the collection of natural beauties within a 15-minute drive or a half-hour bike ride.
Stroll around Goose Rocks Beach, the Tyler Brook Reserve, or the Timber Point Trail. If you’re feeling energetic, the Biddeford Pool is a beautiful ride northward. It’s a popular spot for wanderers, artists, and tourists.
The town features a host of other reasons to stay, including artisan ice creams, boutique shopping, fresh fish and a lot of arts and culture for such a small place.
Check out F-8 Fine Art Gallery or head to the Kennebunkport Historical Society for some history. Political junkies can check out the riverside spot with views of the Bush family’s summer home.
