This decidedly nautical hotel near Atlantic Beach, FL., is a nice find for anyone who wants a bit of Jacksonville area history.
It’s a renovated 1946 motel, more charming than impressive. We always love a retro makeover, but here they have a special significance.
Head towards the beach, and you’ll notice plenty of Very Florida Architecture crowding the sand.
For decades, renovation wasn’t really on the to-do list of any local developer, making a pre-60s build a rare find.
There was a whole lot of tear-down and re-build going around that easily could have hit the Salt Air Inn.
The owners here, though, decided to renovate, and they hit the right spot.
Finished in 2022, you’ll find plenty of wood privacy fencing, a bright blue coat of paint, and a small but cute pool.
It’s definitely relaxed; if you want to feel head-to-toe pampered, you’ll want something a little more chichi.
For a bit of the relaxed, comfortable, classic Jacksonville vibe, this spot between the sand and the street is the one.
What are the rooms like?
- Number of rooms: 15 total.
- Room types: Suites and cozy studios.
- Decor: Nautical theme with blues, reds, and ship accents.
- Amenities: A/C, bathtub, TV, microwave, coffee machine, mini fridge; suites add sitting areas and kitchenettes.
- See each room in detail here
Most of the rooms are suites, but the budget-conscious can find some cozy studios if they choose.
Decor leans heavy on the sea, more slapdash than we’d like, but cute all the same.
You’ll get a whole range of blues, some cute red accents, and a few traditional ship’s wheels plopped on the walls.
It’s a renovation, not a new build. The non-suites will force you to spend a lot of time in the courtyard or the pool.
But, like, it’s a beach town. Did you want to stay inside the whole time?
They range from Queen Singles to King Singles all the way up to King Single or Double Suites that end up a perfectly comfortable 400 square feet.
Whatever you choose, you’ll have your own A/C, a bathtub, TV, microwave, coffee machine, and a mini fridge. Suites include sitting areas and kitchenettes.
What are prices like?
And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Light breakfast: Free snacks available around property.
- Nearby dining: Beaches Town Center for restaurants and bars.
- Recreation: Bike rentals, surfboards, kayaks, paddle boards, chairs, umbrellas.
You’ll find free snacks stashed around the property, in the rooms and the lobby.
What’s termed a free breakfast is still basically snacks, but it’s a nice touch if you’re a light breakfast person.
For everything else, you’ll want to head into Beaches Town Center, where most of the area’s bars and restaurants can be found.
The Inn makes it easy to get around, with bike rentals available, and has easy access to everything else you might want on a beach vacation.
They’ll set up rentals for surfboards, kayaks, paddle boards, beach chairs and umbrellas.
We’d kind of prefer if something on the list of complimentary, but hey, it’s a motel in the end.
How is the neighborhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Beach access: 5-minute walk to the sand and local bars.
- Nearby attractions: Jax Ale Trail, Beaches Museum, outdoor event venues.
- Day trips: Jacksonville proper 25-min drive, plus state parks and nature preserves north.
- Car optional: Beach town accessible on foot or bike.
The neighborhood is excellent, and they’re semi-correct in saying you don’t really need a car.
If you’re a full-on beach bum, you really won’t. The beach is a 5-minute walk away, next to a collection of the area’s most enjoyable bars, restaurants and shopping.
For our brewery friends, at least 30% of the Jax Ale Trail is found near The Beaches.
Even Jacksonville Beach, where you’ll find a wider variety of places to see, is only a 20-minute bike ride.
There’s a Beaches Museum there, and a few outdoor event venues that can make for a nice outing.
Jacksonville proper will require a car, with a 25-minute drive to check out the sights Downtown.
There are multiple art museums, theaters, fairgrounds, and plenty of other restaurants, cafés, and breweries to check out. It’s a bit in flux, with a lot of construction going on.
But even beyond the city, a lot of the best sightseeing in the area is going to call for a vehicle.
Just head north, and you’ll hit a large collection of state parks, nature preserves, and other testaments to Florida’s wide range of coastal beauty.
And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?
