Is it Art Deco? Is it quirk? Is it somehow romantic? Is that a giant pocketwatch hanging from the ceiling?
Stained glass chandeliers hang over both vintage advertisements and classical sculpture in Silver Lake’s most unique boutique hotel.
It’s the best of both worlds, the slapdash glamour of the speakeasy style and the friendly comfort of a down to earth hostel.
Interesting trinkets, one-of-a-kind artworks, and some top-notch flea market finds fill every nook and cranny.
It’s not a traditional hotel experience, but The Rosemary will tickle your sense of adventure and rouse your curiosity.
It’s staffless most of the time, so one for the independent traveler, though they are always available by phone.

Rooms are simple and comfortable in essentials, deliciously quirky in decor.
Moody linens and vintage desk chairs keep the mysterious atmosphere alive in spaces adorned with retro posters, heirloom wallpaper, and ornate mirrors.
On the ground floors are rooms with single and double beds, but the real showstoppers are in the tower.
Perched at the top of a winding staircase, the Tower Suite and Room exemplify The Rosemary’s mix of glamour and comfort.
They share a bathroom and a full kitchen.
From the Suite, you can enjoy these views from a private patio, or stay inside in your luxurious hot tub. Book the Tower Room and Suite together to get full access to the entire tower for four.
Bathrooms are shared at The Rosemary, though toiletries are provided. On a small property like this sharing is minimal, but if your idea of a vacation includes lots of pampering, The Rosemary has a fully private option.
The Bungalow is a cozy unit adjacent to the main building, with a full kitchen, jacuzzi-style tub, and a gorgeous little breakfast nook.
You’ll find some more modern touches like bold colors and hip textiles. Never fear, the stained glass and dark wood the hostel is known for are still there.

And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Food & drink: Limited to water and coffee in the lounge.
- Social space: Stylish lounge perfect for relaxing with your own wine.
- Extras: No linen/towel rental fees, plus handy items like toothbrushes and earplugs.
Food and drink are limited to water and coffee in the super cool lounge, where you might find yourself wanting to hang out for hours.
The bar is for aesthetics only, it’s neither serviced nor staffed, but as a space it’s very cool; perfect for a bottle of Californian wine from the chic market off Santa Monica Boulevard.
There’s no nonsense about linen and towel rentals like in your lower-end hostels. They also provide little things people tend to forget, like toothbrushes, earplugs, etc.

For the person who wants to stay in a swanky speakeasy-themed hostel, there’s no better neighborhood.
The heart of Silver Lake is a short walk through residential streets, where you’ll find the best of shopping, coffee, and well-curated cocktails.
The grandfather of LA’s third-wave coffee brigade, Intelligentsia, is just around the corner. It’s the perfect introduction to the chic food scene in the area.
At night you’ll find some of the best cocktail bars and relaxed party spots in the city.
Public transit is not far and easy to navigate if you want to do some looking around Hollywood, Downtown LA, or some Beverly Hills.
Those up for adventure can take it all the way to Santa Monica, though we recommend a car for an above-ground day trip.
Griffith Park and Observatory offer more outside activities just a short drive away.
You wander around the canyons, enjoy a planetarium show, and watch the sun set from one of the highest points in LA.
And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?
Some things guests liked:
”The Rosemary is such a cool spot. The space is really eclectic and exactly what you expect from the photos. If you love the photos you’ll love the vibe once you get there. The facilities were clean and we felt safe in the area! Very accessible to various spots in LA as well :)….”
”For an unassuming exterior, The Rosemary was a wonderful hidden gem that provided exactly the refuge my wife and I needed as we explored LA. Quaint, clean, and uniquely decorated!…”
Some things guests didn’t like:
”The walls are a little thin but you can get that everywhere….”
”The fact that the bathroom is shared is not clearly advertised (even though the place is indeed labelled as an hostel). The hostel is just next a road with a lot of traffic, and one windows of our room could not properly close, meaning we heard the cars loudly….”
