TL;DR
- Charming stay: Small, east-Anchorage B&B with a friendly, homey vibe.
- Bright design: Crisp white exterior with sunny, chic interiors.
- Community feel: Welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel at home.

This east-Anchorage boutique B&B, set in the quiet residential area of Muldoon, is a delightful exercise in informal, everyday luxury.
Set in a large house on a street that could be any other street, it feels like going to your best friend’s house for a sleepover.
A posh sleepover though. The exterior is a crisp white, and the interiors are bright and sunny.
Rooms and common areas are peppered with elegant or chic furniture, a nice mix of contemporary minimalism and cozy vintage vibes.
SunStar markets itself as a community-centered place, and it’s this focus, we think, that creates the friendly feel.
It doesn’t mean you’ll be invited to join the rest of the guests for a group throat-singing session or anything, just that SunStar Alaska B&B is one place that you’ll feel very much at home.
What are the rooms like?
- 4 rooms: Small but well-furnished, with shared bathroom setup for most rooms.
- Cozy style: Mix of contemporary minimalism and vintage touches with plush white textiles.
- Functional amenities: Queens beds, TVs, and working/seating areas in each room.

Our main complaint is lodged here: the rooms are not large at SunStar Alaska B&B.
This isn’t a shocking admission for a house-hotel, but if you like to spread out, you might want to check out something a little less snug.
The smallest is 85 square feet, which is not the smallest we’ve ever seen, but it’s probably top of the charts.
The largest is 132 Square feet, still small, but closer to a typical historic house.
Some of this can be attributed to the three smallest rooms sharing a total of two external bathrooms, both equipped with walk-in showers and complimentary bath amenities.
We’re careful around shared bathrooms, but find the ratio of guest to bathroom to be pretty inoffensive.
Downsides, well, aside, rooms are sweet, well-furnished, and welcoming.
Furnishings are perfectly chosen, decor well-curated, a plush mix of white textiles in crisp cottons and fluffy wools, accented in blues and greens.
Beds are queens, they’ve managed to finagle some kind of working or seating area into each, and TVs as well.
What are prices like?
And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Breakfast included: Light options, sweets, and savories with casual presentation.
- Comfortable common areas: Dining room and small private outdoor tables behind the house.
- Minimal facilities: Focused on simple, friendly service rather than luxury amenities.
Breakfast at SunStar Alaska is selected from a lovely and surprisingly extensive menu with light options, sweets and savories.
The choices do vary, and will be communicated by the hotel closer to your stay.
They are reliably excellent, however, and presented with a sort of casual flair that makes it feel like the friend you’re visiting woke up early to prep.
Which fit the general vibe. You can hang out and eat in the dining room or outside, where there are a few private tables behind the house.
That’s about it for facilities, but the common areas are as bright and friendly as the rest of the house.
How is the neighborhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Residential setting: Quiet Muldoon area, ideal for a peaceful stay.
- Outdoor access: Parks, Cheney Lake loop, and Coastal Trail within short drives.
- Nearby attractions: Downtown Anchorage and Midtown within 15-minute drive, including museums, breweries, and dining.
SunStar Alaska’s location depends pretty heavily on what you want to be doing in Anchorage. Do you like to walk everywhere? Not the best.
Are you here mostly for outdoor adventures? Pretty good.
It’s out of the way, absolutely. Though the Muldoon area has its own little strip-mall selection of shopping and eating, they’re not the most attractive options in the city.
It does have a nice handful of parks which, if you’ve got your canine with you, are perfect.
The Arnold Muldoon Park is just around the corner, while a 20-minute walk will get you to a super-lovely loop around Cheney Lake.
Besides that, you’re looking at a short drive to the nearest attractions.
Downtown is a 15-minute drive, where you can explore a nice selection of restaurants, museums, and breweries.
The Anchorage Museum is a nice opportunity to get to know the area, the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts, not far from it, for the more entertainment-focused tourist.
Throughout Downtown, there’s a series of monuments and murals that make a nice tour.
If you just want to walk, you can grab the Coastal Trail from Downtown or anywhere else along the coast.
The views are incredible and the fresh air without rival.
Midtown has a couple places to eat, and some Very Basic Shopping opportunities, another 15-minute-ish drive from the B&B.
Potential adventures are certainly a drive, but nothing outrageous. Palmer’s Musk Ox Farm is about 45 minutes away, with a number of trailheads off of the highway leading away from Anchorage.
Or head south to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. Along Route 1 you’ll find a series of viewing points out towards the sea.
There are also hiking trails in almost every small town or stopover you see. Grab the keys and see where Alaska takes you.
And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?
Some things guests liked:
”I liked everything about the property. Too many things to list…. But I can give it a shot. Pleasant linens, nice bidet, great shower, beautiful decor, great lighting, angelic host- helped me when uber didn’t have any drivers available, great location, safe neighborhood, fresh backyard chicken eggs, diet accommodation….”
”Very clean and well appointed. The residential location makes it feel more like being home. The Host Sondra exceeded my expectations and is a fantastic cook. It’s easy to tell when some has a passion for their work!…”
Some things guests didn’t like:
”It was a little further out of the center of town than I expected. But with that said, it also made it more quiet!…”
”I was sad that I couldn’t stay 2 nights, but she was booked up (and for good reason!) get your reservation in early!…”
