If you’re not too attached to the centre of Manchester, this boutique hotel in suburban Didsbury is a lovely option.
It’s a converted Victorian townhouse, and an intimate space that feels like an English country hideaway.
It’s not to far from the centre but here in Didsbury you’ll be surrounded by peaceful parks and gardens, including the hotel’s own.
The atmosphere is timeless elegance, whether in the bright greens of the garden in summer, or the sort of romantic gloom you find by a pub fireplace in winter.
Eleven Didsbury does actually have a cosy little bar with a fireplace, which is for residents only.
The hotel is definitely well-suited to full rentals too, with a long history of hosting weddings, events and meetings.
What are the rooms like?
- Number of rooms: 20, all with timeless elegance
- Classic style: with muted colours, damask florals, and relaxing space
- Varied sizes: from 20 sq m ‘Snug’ to multi-level Veranda Suite
- Modern amenities: include TVs, radios, mini bars, rain showers, and butler trays
- See each room in detail here
Rooms have the same timeless feel.
The printed wallpaper and striped upholstery is on the edge of the now, sure.
However, with soft, muted colours and plenty of damask-esque florals there’s an easy elegance that feels entirely at home with the building.
There’s a lot of grey, sage greens, and other unobtrusive pastels that add to the relaxing nature of the space.
Of course, it’s an old building, and rooms are on the smaller side, but we’ve definitely seen smaller.
The ‘Snug’ option ranges from around 20 square meters, ‘Cosy’ hits 26, and once you get to the larger options everything is positively roomy.
The most luxurious is the multi-level Veranda Suite, complete with skylights and garden lounge.
Every room is fully modernized, with white tiled bathrooms and pretty superb rain showers.
You’ll enjoy TVs, radios, mini bars and complimentary butler trays in each room.
What are prices like?
And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Guest-exclusive dining: with breakfast, Afternoon Tea, and Deli Menu
- Bar and lounge: open most of the day for drinks and snacks
Food is on the limited side, but exclusive to guests, and actually more than you’d expect from a hotel with a decided B&B vibe.
Breakfast is good but not included as standard. During the day then the small kitchen works to order.
Among your choices are a delightful afternoon Tea and a small Deli Menu.
The bar, lounge and conservatory are open to drinkers, snackers, and loungers for most of the day.
How is the location? Anything interesting nearby?
- Suburban charm: with quiet parks and greenery
- Easy city access: 10-minute walk to train station to Manchester Piccadilly
- Access to central attractions: – Manchester Cathedral, Northern Quarter, and Manchester Gallery
- Convenient for university business: transport to Manchester Museum and Whitworth Park
This is not the place for easy access to all of Manchester’s top tourist attractions.
We’d recommend a car if you were hoping to get out to Lyme and the Peaks. It’s a half-hour drive to the edge, then some lovely roaming through forests and manor houses and rolling hills.
If you’re just in it for the city, there is a train station a 10-minute walk away that’ll get you to Manchester Piccadilly in 20 minutes.
And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?
Some things guests liked:
“The room was beautiful and spacious, including a well appointed full bathroom, a lovely claw-footed bath tub and separate sitting room type area. We appreciated the coffee machine and the nice bath products. They kindly allowed us to check out an hour late when we asked…”
“Lovely hotel, great location. Beautiful room, very comfortable bed. Fabulous bath to soak in. Breakfast excellent….”
Some things guests didn’t like:
”Just needed coaster for cups and glasses in the room….”
”The tea supply was very limited, which meant we had to share a tea bag in the morning. I’m sure if we had asked for more they would have given them to us but we didn’t really want to bother. It was really a very minor issue though!…”
