TL;DR
- Deeply historic: Zurich boutique hotel blending medieval architecture with bold modern design.
- Individually designed: rooms and suites that feel more like a curated home than a hotel.
- Prime Old Town: location with walkable access to the lake, shopping, dining, and culture.

One of a collection of luxury Swiss hotels, Widder Hotel in Zurich is one of their most openly historical.
You’ll find worn stone, wooden beams, and painted walls that feel like a combination of museum and manor home.
It’s hard to pin a vibe to the place, as each room and suite is unique. This is quite an achievement with almost 50 rooms to contend with.
You’ve got the historical, sure, but they’ve also thrown in enough bold modernist touches, opulent textiles, and unique, non hotel-y layouts to make anyone interested.
The main through line is a dedication to comfort and aesthetic that adds extra quality to your Zurich experience.
The city itself is a quietly confident design and architectural hub, and the Widder distills much of that energy into its own space.
What are the rooms like?
- 49 rooms: and suites, each individually designed with no repeated layouts.
- Wide variety: of styles, from historic beamed ceilings to Art Deco-inspired modern design.
- Spacious layouts: even at entry level, all exceeding 20 square metres.

Like we mentioned before, the Widder Hotel has a variety of rooms with nothing really in common besides high standards of comfort and luxury.
Historic suites offer beautiful beamed ceilings, while Design options have more of an Art Deco vibe tied to Northern European modernist influences.
Rooms are all in the Design category, slightly more modern then, but filled with rich woods that add classic elegance.
Even with the cosy, historical vibes, the smallest rooms are a respectable size, all over 20 square metres.
Historic options come up in the Suites, starting at a super spacious 43 square metres. From there, you just get fancier and fancier.
It all culminates in a large, terraced penthouse suite with views of the lake, though our personal favourite is the wood-filled duplex with its cosy rooftop loft.
Even the simplest options feature HDTVs, desks, Nespresso machines, and minibars. Most have options with bathtubs; check with the concierge if you’re dedicated to a soak.
What are prices like?
Zurich boutique hotels command premium pricing, especially in historic Old Town locations.
And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Multiple restaurants: ranging from French fine dining to Asian street food-inspired concepts.
- Stylish bar: with a jazzy atmosphere and strong cocktail focus.
- Shared access: to spa and fitness facilities across the hotel group.
At the hotel, you’ll have plenty of food options. Breakfast is served daily, with extended hours on weekends.
Post-midday, this city block is your oyster. You’ve got a bar with a jazzy vibe and historic touches.
Next is a meaty bistro near the street, perfect for people watching.
For fancy-pants dinner, the French-inspired Widder Restaurant stretches across two of the property’s buildings.
Soï 28 brings the 21st century with Asian street food-inspired delicacies.
At the hotel’s business daddy’s other hotels, you’ll have more food options than you know what to do with.
A stay at Widder Hotel means you have access to all the spaces accross their collection, and free transfer between them.
This matters most regarding the spa, in our opinion.
Yet, you can also use it to explore other parts of the city, other cuisines, and even other gyms, if the posh option inside the Widder isn’t doing it for you.
How is the neighbourhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Old Town setting: with immediate access to Zurich’s historic core.
- Lake proximity: allows easy walks to the waterfront and eastern quays.
- Excellent walkability: to shopping, museums, nightlife, and cultural landmarks.
Zurich is, of course, a lakeside city and staying here at the very tip of Lake Zurich allows you to absorb its unique atmosphere.
Widder Hotel sits comfortably between the east and west lakeshore, surrounded by the charming Old City, and a reasonable distance from everything else.
The famed Bahnhofstrasse is minutes away, as is the Lindenhof and almost all the churches of note.
If you want more revelry, head west towards Langstrasse. It’s a 20-minute walk over the Sihl and past the Kasernenareal.
Less fuss and more museums lie on the other side, in Seefeld.
You’ll hit the Opera House first, just 15 minutes away.
As you continue down the east side of the lake, you’ll encounter historic quaysides, the Corbusier Centre, and the Chinese Garden.
