TL;DR
- Iconic: Zurich boutique, design hotel fully rooted in local modern history.
- Confident: modern interiors with bold colours and a serious contemporary art collection.
- Well-priced: for a unique, central stay in one of Europe’s priciest cities.

Helvetia Hotel’s bar, Helvti Bar, is an institution in District 4, Zurich. The hotel’s reputation followed on from that, a common enough story in hospitality.
This was in the 1980s, though, before boutique hotels were even a thing. and so Helvita Zurich likely referred to itself as a design hotel, one of the very first, back in the day.
It’s definitely still a design hotel today, and indeed has added Art Hotel to its schema. And its confidently trend-free decor is a step above the usual.
The extensive art collection is seriously fashionable, of course.
Yet, the kind of ‘art deco’ touches, floral wallpape,r etc. that make up many a we’re-trying-a-bit too-hard-and nervous-you-won’t-like-it design hotels are nowhere to be found at Helvetia.
Instead, you’ve got bright modern colours, artwork after artwork after artwork, and the clean lines we usually expect from northern European design.
It makes for a space that is bright, clever, and very modern in style.
Helvetia is also, we feel, surprisingly well priced for such an iconic hotel in one of the most expensive cities in the world.
What are the rooms like?
- Rooms: 36 thoughtfully designed spaces with a warm modern feel.
- Cosy: smallest options start at 16 m², with larger rooms and attic suites available.
- Comfortable: high-quality furnishings, desks, TVs, and queen-sized beds throughout.
- See all the rooms in detail here
Now, we’ve never thought of modern design as feeling super welcoming.
But, we’re very happy to be proven wrong by Helvetia’s stylish yet cosy guestrooms.
There’s a base of white with contrasting colours that could have the sterile feeling of pure modernism.
Luckily, small touches like wooden moulding and window stools, perfect for resting a book or phone, make it feel like a super-chic gay uncle’s guestroom.
There’s a warmth to the space that’s lacking in a lot of modern design.
The smallest options are notably small, 16 square metre ‘Cosy’ rooms. For two people, we’d probably opt for a Medium Room option.
Larger rooms and Attic Suites are beautifully situated, even if we’re not too fussed about the striped walls.
Whatever you choose, the furnishings are well-curated and of excellent quality. Even the super-cute Cosy Rooms feature TVs, queen-sized beds and desks.
What are prices like?
And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Social: spaces revolve around the legendary Helvti Bar.
- Dining: options range from Swiss fine dining to relaxed outdoor venues.
- Extra: perks include rooftop space with citywide views
Common areas are mostly devoted to food & drink, with the famed Helvti Bar leading the pack.
It’s up to the task, in our opinion. Beautifully designed in pale greens and soft, worn wood, there’s a simple yet timeless elegance to it all.
The first floor features a fine dining restaurant offering traditional Swiss cuisine. It doesn’t have the effortless cool of Helvti Bar, but for a fancy night out, you could do much worse.
The cute yet office-y Library and Drawing Room are available for private rentals.
Everything else is outside, to great effect. The rooftop is only accessible for private events, but other outdoor spaces allow for some al fresco dining.
The Sihlterrasse sits you more or less next to the canal. There’s a lot of greenery in the way, but we think that might be better, if we’re honest.
Finally, we have the Pool Bar, which offers the vibes, if not the pool. We’re talking pastel lawn furniture in an outdoor space and a chic menu of summer classics.
There’s no space for wellness within the walls, but you’ll enjoy free entry to the nearby Indigo Fitness Club or reduced entry to the next-door Avtiv Fitness.
How is the neighbourhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Central: position between Langstrasse and Zurich’s Old City.
- Walkable: access to nightlife, shopping, and riverside paths.
- Balanced: location for culture, dining, and relaxed urban exploring.
Helvetia sits on the border of Langstrasse and the Old City, meaning you’ll have pretty easy access to two of the city’s best spots.
Bahnhofstrasse and its high-end shopping aren’t too far away, but it’s far enough away that you can enjoy it once and then leave it alone.
The Sihl as well allows for waterfront charm without being stuffed in the centre.
There’s even some slightly rough terrain perfect for a dog walk under the bridges.
The road Langstrasse is no more than a 10-minute walk, making it easy to enjoy the vibes, the restaurants, and more.
The lake will be a bit more of a trek, but nothing impossible. The Arboretum, for example, is a solid 20 minutes.
From there, you can stroll down next to the Mythenquai for some extended green space near the Museum Rietberg.
The FIFA Museum is also not far, if football’s even more than a thing for you.
We’ll admit, the hotel is on one side of things, and if you’re more interested in the Operahaus, Chinese Garden, Kunsthaus and Corbusier Centre, it might be smarter to stay in Seefeld or deep in the Old City.
And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?
Some things guests liked:
“Staff and room were fantastic. The restaurant had the best meal we ate in Zurich. I highly recommend both the hotel and the restaurant….”
“A unique artistically characterful place. Very friendly and helpful staff in all areas. Great breakfast and a very good restaurant for evening dining, Location is very central within easy walking distance to main station. Despite being situated on a busy junction the soundproofing is amazing and everywhere in the hotel is quiet….”
Some things guests didn’t like:
”The room could use a chair or two, and also it would be nice to be able to control de room temperature, but it wasn’t that bad….”
”Parking was only at the City Parking about 2-3 minutes walking distance, but you revive a 25% discount through the hotel, so not bad in my opinion….”
