TL;DR
- Historic: 17th-century Old Town building with genuine character and lived-in charm.
- Timeless: mix of period features and modern comforts that never feels gimmicky.
- Atmospheric: interiors that feel personal, layered, and quietly luxurious.

You’ve got a fine old, 17th-century, building, sturdy stone walls and decorated wooden beams to greet you at Hôtel Les Armures, in the heart of Old Town Geneva.
Much of the aesthetic is historical, then, but you’ve got a nice balance of personality and practicality here.
Crisp linens, high-quality furnishings, and plush, open-plan bathrooms make it difficult to feel like you’ve gone back in time – most of the time – but there’s kind of a timeless quality too.
It’s more than the mix of period influences creates a sense of timelessness. Carl Jung or Romain Grosjean could be staying down the hall and neither would be that surprising.
An all powdered up for the night Jean-Jacques Rousseau might more raise an eyebrow, but you might also look up at those, we’ve seen some things, wooden ceilings and be like, okay, no, that makes sense.
Hôtel Les Armures invites you to join generations of Genevan movers and shakers and enjoy its pleasantly mismatched, timeless vibes.
What are the rooms like?
- Rooms: 32 total, each with its own look and personality.
- Eclectic: styles range from stone-walled historic to lighter, sunnier layouts.
- Comfortable: amenities include Chromecast TVs, minibars, Nespresso machines, and work areas.
- See all the rooms in detail here
Rooms are also a bit mismatched, in that they don’t all have the same atmosphere. They are all a bit charming, if a bit chaotic in style.
There’s no solid through-line, which can be a great break from the more cookie-cutter hotel styles you’ll find.
Some have stone walls, some peekaboos. Some have super fancy beams, others straightforward historical wood.
They’re all pretty neat in their own way, so we’d recommend just focusing on what you need.
Hôtel Les Armures offers tiny little design rooms on the lowest level, where you’ll find open-plan bathrooms and single beds that make them acceptable.
Superior Rooms are more typical for the hotel, sunnier Deluxe options are similar, if not a bit bigger.
Nothing would be considered spacious until the Prestige Rooms, which offer bathtub options.
And, in the end, we’d say it’s the Junior Suites that really have the monopoly on charm.
They’ve got the beams, the views, the weird little cut-out stone on the walls that we don’t like but seem to be popular, and bathtubs on request.
Whatever you choose, amenities are solid, working areas are a given, TVs have Chromecast, and you’ve got minibars and Nespresso machines each morning.

And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Classic: Swiss tavern dining with fondue, soups, and hearty meat dishes.
- Atmospheric: historic dining rooms and chalet-style interiors enhance the experience.
- Limited: facilities beyond dining, with the focus firmly on ambience and location.
Restaurant Les Armures is a bit more on the classical side, with historic dining rooms, a chalet-inspired space, and outdoor seating.
They serve up Swiss classics, no fussy modern here. We’re talking good old-fashioned fondues, soups, and all varieties of rich meat dishes.
It’s full-on tavern – olde style – much more Rousseau than anyone else. You don’t have to wear your curly white wig, but you might look less out of place with it on here than in most of Geneva.
It’s not cheap, but it’s a well-loved venue. The food at Hôtel Les Armures is one of the highlights of a stay here, as is the atmospheric old dining hall.
Beyond food and drink, there’s not much else to do here, except perhaps soak in the lovely atmosphere of the hotel and of the Old Town in general.
How is the neighbourhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Central Old Town: location puts major sights within easy walking distance.
- Historic landmarks: like the Cathedral and Maison Tavel are moments away.
- Scenic: access to the waterfront and English Garden in under ten minutes.
Out into the city means around Geneva’s Old Town. It’s super-walkable, with almost all attractions within 15-minutes of one another.
Hotel Les Armures is very close to the Cathedral, L’Ancien Arsenal with its old cannons and oddly beautiful mosaic artworks, and the quirky Maison Tavel, the oldest private house in Geneva.
If you’d like to check out the water, as you do when in Geneva, Place du Port is less than 10 minutes away. The monument marks the beginning of the city’s main waterfront.
Across the road, you’ll find the English Garden, access to the other side of the city, and the Geneva ferry terminal.
For more contemporary attractions like the UN buildings, CERN, and the Avenue of the Flags, you’ll probably want a car.
The Science Gateway is decidedly out of town, but still under an hour and quite close to the Botanic Garden.
And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?
Some things guests liked:
“A very romantic hotel in the heart of the old city of Geneva, close to Rue de Rive and the Lakeshore. Given the time of the year -December- we chose not to be along the Lakeshore as it would have been unbearable. Courteous staff, a super good restaurant serving their landmark dish “FONDUE”, among a variety of other options on the menu….”
“As always, great hotel, friendly and professional staff and very good food! It’s a beautiful old building in the heart of Geneva old town. It has loads of character yet super clean and modern re the rooms and bathrooms….”
Some things guests didn’t like:
”It doesn’t have a gym located within the hotel. You do have access to one though….”
”No parking available. Valet parking optional and available on 1/2 hour’s notice….”
