Bairro Alto Hotel, in the Lisbon neighbourhood of the same name, is a nicely old fashioned, upscale option in the City of Seven Hills.
But, at Bairro Alto Hotel, you don’t really have to deal with the hills unless you want to.
You’re at the top of a hill here for starters, hence the name, and it’s a pretty much self contained, touristic neighbourhood.
The hotel is pretty self contained too. It is the kind of place that you could probably spend a week in, if you brought a nice budget for spa treatments and fine food.
We hope you wouldn’t want to, to be honest. Lisbon’s outsides are as lovely as the hotel’s insides, and this is a great location for exploring.
The vibe is chic and sophisticated, another in a long list of Lisbon boutique hotels that manage to match contemporary decor to historic buildings.
Indeed, this is arguably the original boutique in the city, a landmark lemony yellow number next to a cute city park.
None of the many renovations since the hotel opened in 2005 have lessened the charm of the 18th-century building.
Indeed, they’ve been conducted with utmost respect to the structure’s Pombal-era style.
We’ll assume this is why the contemporary decor fits so well. They know it intimately, they love the space, and they’re ready to make you love it, too.
What are the rooms like?
- 15 rooms: across singles, classics and suites
- Contemporary style: patterned wallpaper and modern decor
- Suites shine: spacious layouts with stylish touches
- Amenities included: bathtubs, minibars and work areas
- See each room in detail here
Rooms are solid, with contemporary design in a friendly space.
We’re not going to write odes to them, but they’re pleasant enough to look at.
Wallpaper is patterned, as are the duvets, for a nice bit of personality.
Singles are almost 19 metres squared, which is on the smaller side, but not horrible.
Classic and Prestige Rooms bump you up to a comfortable, if not roomy, amount of space.
They look out onto the city and many have options for connecting rooms.
If you love excellent design and have a budget to work with, we’ll send you to Bairro Alto’s Suites.
Here, they’ve paired wood floors with elegant decor elements that perfectly blur the line between quaint and stylish.
Even the Junior Suites have a sense of style you don’t see in the rooms.
And if you want space to dance, pace, do yoga, whatever, the signature suites have it.
Many are over 67 square metres, with extras like balconies, clawfoot tubs, and more.
All options include a host of amenities, however.
Bathtubs are common, along with working areas, coffee & tea makers, minibars, robes and slippers.
What are prices like?
And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Patisserie treats: dainty breakfast options without leaving the hotel
- BAHR & Terrace: main restaurant plus light menu and views
- Rooftop spot: ideal for sunset drinks and small plates
- Wellness perks: gym, sauna, yoga and personal trainers
Yet, it’s really in the rest of the building that Bairro Alto Hotel reaches the heights of notable hospitality.
We’ll start small with The Patisserie, where you can get all the dainty breakfast treats imaginable, without the indignity of stepping outside.
If you’re a big breakfast type, head to the main restaurant, BAHR & Terrace.
BAHR is the restaurant restaurant, set for every meal. The Terrace features a light all-day menu and incredible views of the city and river.
Cuisine is decidedly local, with one of our favourite menu items: a list of local producers featured in the food.
If the terrace views aren’t enough, head to the Rooftop. This is the place for small plates and drinks.
Specifically, this is the place for an Aperol Spritz during the sunset. In our humble opinion.
If all of this is too formal, take your pastries from the ground floor to the Mezzanine.
It’s a chic little lounge perfect for a rest and treat before you head towards the streets.
If you’d rather stay inside, we’ve got a few days worth of wellness for you.
There’s a gym. Rooftop yoga sessions, a sauna and a whole menu of spa treatments.
How is the neighbourhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Tourist hotspot: among Lisbon’s most famous districts
- Walkable to museums: and scenic riverside paths
- Nightlife central: Pink Street brings lively evenings
- Local alternatives: quieter spots east on Misericórdia
You’re in Barrio Alto, among foreign tourists perhaps Lisbon’s most famous district.
Head to one of the many museums within walking distance, and keep going straight down towards the river and one of Europe’s loveliest riverside walks.
And come evening your hotel is in the right place. Barrio Alto is Lisbon’s most famous nightlife area.
It becomes the city centre come nightfall, with particularly raucous tourist party vibes on Pink Street.
If you’d prefer something more low key, less touristy, head east towards Rua da Misericórdia for a more relaxed, local scene.
The same goes for a Fado houses, for the best traditional venues in town head t0 the back streets of Alfama.
