If you like a little drama to spice up your travel, this Central Oslo boutique hotel is undoubtedly the place to be.
Like many a Nordic boutique hotel, Hotel Christiania Teater is on the large side.
The rule of thumb is that the larger the hotel, the less personable it is, and the less unique. But we’re presenting this one as a strong exception.
In renovating this 1918 theatre, hotel owners opted for a small menagerie of luxury spaces rather than the traditional 100+ identical rooms and suites.
It’s a colourful, glamorous collection that draws from the building’s many years of putting up with fairground acts, opera lovers, vaudeville, the Nazis, and, worst of all, film nerds.
There are some pretty obvious Art Deco influences, but not really the watered-down kind championed by your average boutique hotel.
Nope, this is velvet in numerous colours, floral patterns, marble, shiny sculptures, all the hallmarks of luxury applied with a deft hand.
Touches of natural stone, wood, and other textures ground the aesthetic, keeping things opulent yet affable.
What are the rooms like?
- 112 rooms: Boutique-style property with varied guestrooms and statement Suites.
- Plush decor: Velvet, brass and Japonisme wall art create theatrical personality.
- Range of sizes: Petite Singles through larger rooms balancing style and space.
- Suite upgrades: Soaking tubs, bold furnishings and dramatic design elements.

Guest rooms at Hotel Christiania Teater have a lot of variation, but the general vibe of plush luxury abides.
Decor spends most of its time in velvet and brass, but that can definitely depend on the room you’ve chosen.
Those who like personality and aren’t too fussy about space can snag a Petite Single.
These 13-14 square metre rooms feature gorgeous furnishings tempered by earth tones and often embellished with delicate Japonisme wall paintings.
Double Petites are a similar experience, though with larger beds.
In our opinion, the rest of the rooms sacrifice decorative charm for space, but they’re still stylish and well put-together.
It’s not until you get up to the Suites that you’ll be blown away.
Here, the wall paintings are back, paired with plush couches, even more upholstery, and some statement lampshades we’d bring home with us if they weren’t so conspicuous.
Bedrooms and living areas are decorated with the same charm, and most Suites feature soaking tubs perfect for a relaxing evening.
Whatever you choose, amenities are solid, with soft linens, mini bars, TVs, and coffee and tea capabilities.
What are prices like?
And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Complimentary breakfast: Generous morning spread included for guests.
- Restaurant Teatro: Glam multi-level pizza restaurant with modern flair.
- Wine bar: Sophisticated onsite space for drinks and socialising.
- Extra spaces: Theatre venue and meeting rooms, plus nearby fitness centre access.
Hotel Christiania Teater’s complimentary breakfast is quite the spread.
We’re a lot more charmed by the breakfast spread than the Restaurant Teatro pizzas to be honest, but that’s probably just us, their pizzas come very highly rated.
Said pizzas are part of a super-chic, three-level restaurant & bar space that takes Hotel Christiania Teater’s old school glam charm to a next, more contemporary level.
We’re talking fluorescents, we’re talking gelato. If that doesn’t get you, what will?
If you’d rather something that leans into more classic pretension, head to the onsite wine bar.
It’s another lovely, very sophisticated space. Feel free to wax lyrical about fruity hints, tannins, and whatever, there, or order a cocktail and debate the quality of the bitters.
There are also spaces to rent for small parties or meetings, including the theatre.
There’s no on-site gym (just keep stuffing your face with pizza, folks, you’re on holiday), but determined guests can have access to the nearby EVO Vika fitness centre.
How is the neighbourhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Theatre district: Steps from National Theatre, Chat Noir and Oslo Concert House.
- Cultural sights: Museums, architecture and historic attractions nearby.
- Walkable centre: Easy access to landmarks, shops and public transport.
- City highlights: Opera House, Vigelandsparken and Fram Museum a short ride away.
If you’re into theatre you’ll surely have been drawn to Hotel Christiania Teater in the first place. And there are many more theatres nearby.
The historic Chat Noir is just around the corner, the stunning National Theatre is right next door, and the Oslo Concert House is a few minutes in the other direction.
Architecture nerds, too, or even just your basic admirers of beautiful things, can also find lots to distract them in the vicinity.
There are also plenty of museums within walking distance, though we wouldn’t rate them as highly as Oslo’s theatres.
The National Museum is a nice space, but the Viking Museum feels a bit touristy/cash-grabby.
Other options like the Nobel Peace Centre and the Ibsen Museum (also a small theatre) are recommended.
Other highlights, like Vigelandsparken, the Fram Museum, the Operahouse are more like a taxi or bus ride away.
If you’re looking for nightlife, the more local nightlife areas of Torggata or Grunerløkka are not super close, but definitely walkable.
