TL;DR
- Local feel: A tiny, design-led boutique hotel in a calmer part of central Amsterdam.
- Nordic minimalism: Hygge-inspired interiors layered onto late-1800s architecture.
- Intimate scale: Just nine rooms, a cosy patio, and a neighbourhood vibe.

Between Amsterdam West and Jordaan this boutique hotel is your chance to experience a slightly less-known part of Amsterdam.
We all know and love De Wallen and the inner canals, and we promise they won’t be far.
The charming pale red brick of Morgan & Mees, just off Singelgracht Canal, though is a touch more residential.
Factor in the lovely front patio, the hotel’s super-intimate size, and the delightful streets that surround, and you’ve got something worth leaving De Wallen for.
The decor is spot-on – they’ve made it a nicely crisp, contemporary space, with a Northern European flavoured cosy, hygge, minimalism.
And it’s all carefully, lovingly, applied to original architectural details from the late 1800s.
What are the rooms like?
- 9 rooms: Ultra-boutique size with thoughtfully designed Cute, Comfy, and Special categories.
- Stylish layouts: Split-levels, clawfoot tubs, terraces, and Miranda Priestly-level interiors.
- Modern comforts: Rain showers, Smart TVs, and complimentary tea and coffee in every room.

Rooms at Morgan & Mees are divided into Cute, Comfy and Special, though we think all of them fit pretty well into each description.
They range from 15 square metres to 35, with squishy beds and appealing furnishings.
There’s a black-and-white-ish vibe, but not in the DeVille sense. It’s more like if you put all the rooms together, they could make up Miranda Priestly’s house.
We’re talking velvety/sheer animal print upholstery, parquet flooring, and soft grey quilts that give cashmere, though we’d assume they’re not.
Cute rooms have two levels, perfect for a solo traveller or a snuggly couple. Comfy options offer more space, and queen or king options.
Special rooms are arguably the top tier, with plenty of room and unique elements like clawfoot bathtubs and terraces.
Our favourite part, though, is that each room seems well-considered and perfect for someone.
All options at Morgan & Mees have rain showers, Smart TVs, a few snacks, and complimentary tea and coffee.

And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Full restaurant: Seasonal Mediterranean-leaning menus from breakfast to dinner.
- Drinks-focused: Strong wine list, cocktails, and gourmet bar snacks.
- Flexible spaces: Indoor dining, terrace seating, bar area, and private rental options.
Morgan & Mees is not a big hotel, there’s just 9 rooms, so don’t expect a long list of facilities.
That being said, if you want to get your hopes up about food, we don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
The onsite restaurant is open from breakfast until dinner, with different menus for each meal, so you don’t get bored.
Cuisine is seasonal and vaguely Mediterranean, but with varied worldwide influences.
A solid wine list and a nice cocktail menu can keep you occupied for quite a while, especially when you consider the gourmet bar snacks.
And, with an indoor space, a terrace and a bar area, you can match the experience to the event or the weather, or your friend who runs cold and hates bar stools.
There are even a few opportunities for private rentals, if you check with the hotel staff.
How is the neighbourhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Calmer canals: A quieter, residential-feeling area still within central Amsterdam.
- Close to classics: Anne Frank House and 9-Streets are an easy walk away.
- Bike-friendly: Museums and Vondelpark are a quick cycle from the hotel.
The neighbourhood is about as far from a seething centre of hedonism as you can get, so maybe not the Amsterdam you’ve been led to expect.
We like this, though.
You’ll be further away from tourist meccas like the Red Light District and tehe coffee shops, which brings a level of peace.
Yet you’re still in the city centre, and especially around Hugo de Grootplein (less than 5 minutes away) there’s plenty of life.
The outer canals will be the most accessible, with the Anne Frank House just a 10-minute walk away.
From there you can continue towards the centre or head around to the 9-Streets district, where you’ll find plenty of other cultural spots and places to visit.
The Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum are a full half hour, but if you snag a bicycle, you’ll be able to get there quickly and miss the chaos of the main city.
Finish it off with a ride around Vondelpark, and you’ve got a trip to remember.

Some things guests didn’t like:
