The Quetzal is a laid-back boutique hotel in the center of Cancun, and one of the few places in the city for a quirky, artsy stay.
The delightfully colorful building is tucked away in a character filled, mural-covered neighborhood.
It’s the kind of place you wish you’d actually discovered yourself, wandering among these art-covered walls to happen upon this little oasis of hospitality.
Rooms are clean and colorful, the outside hanging-out area is unpretentious and comfortable, and the service is friendly and helpful.
If you want to feel like a princess, this probably won’t do it for you.
But, for those of us who like less formality, this kind of authenticity, and nightly rates, in a place like Cancun, can’t be beat.
What are the rooms like?
- 6 rooms: in total – a small and intimate property.
- Spacious & simple: rooms with handmade, wholesome charm.
- Varied layouts: from singles to suites with views.
- Light on amenities: but nice shared facilities.
- See each room in detail here
Rooms at The Quetzal are spacious and comfortable.
There were definitely no design firms contracted here, and a handmade, wholesome quality runs through it.
The style is fun, friendly and simple. Rooms are on this side of sparse, for sure, but they’ve got plenty of room for your luggage.
Otherwise, the architecture does excellent work. Top-floor bathrooms are bright and sunny with glass ceilings. Woven blankets in each room add a stylish kind of comfort.
Beds range from doubles to kings, rooms from singles to suites. Some have terraces, others balconies, and many have nice views of the onsite pool.
The Quetzal’s rooms are a little light on the amenities, we’ll admit.
But the property as a whole has an excellent selection of shared amenities. With only 6 rooms, we don’t think you’re going to have many issues.

And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- B&B style: with complimentary breakfast.
- Coffee & snacks: available anytime.
- Board games & workspaces: in common areas.
- Onsite pool: ideal for relaxing.
- Rooftop & gym: for yoga and workouts.
Accommodation is B&B style at The Quetzal so you’re down a restaurant, but up a delicious complimentary breakfast.
There’s a coffee station, snack bar, wine on request, and you can take breakfast in your room if you just can’t be dealing with other people just yet.
In the common areas, you’ll find board games, working areas, and plenty of outside space.
Probably the crowning jewel is the on-site pool. It’s not a giant, by any means, but it’s an ideal place to beat the heat.
The pool and patio are also covered in cute, cozy seating that you can lounge in all day.
The rooftop is open to yogis and is a perfect place for a couple of sun salutations. Even the small gym has a cheerful atmosphere.
How is the neighborhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Central Cancun: – local atmosphere, away from hotel strip.
- Local hotspots: like the lovely Parque de las Palapas nearby.
- Night market: and Centro de Cancún close.
- More beaches: a 30-minute drive away.
This is the center of Cancun. It’s quite far from the typical hotel strip, and not everyone’s cup of tea.
Many would call the area Old Town, but it’s a relative term. It’s not full of museums, but it does feature a few interesting landmarks, most notably the Centro de Cancún.
It’s a super interesting area overall, popular with locals and more adventurous tourists.
It has many other hotels, mercados stuffed with fresh seafood, and food stands and small parks that fill with life come sundown.
This main square is home to a big night market and lots of cute things to take selfies in front of.
Even closer to the Quetzal is the Parque de las Palapas, a particularly colorful park with plenty of street food, music and dancing.
There are plenty of excellent local restaurants around the Old Town as well.
Playa San Miguelito and the hotel strip are a half-hour drive, with plenty of smaller beaches and hot spots on the way.
