On Valletta’s famed Old Bakery Street, Palais Le Brun is a house of status – a hotel installed in a 1606 building formerly owned by a string of Maltese high society.
It blends beautifully into the rest of the sandstone street side, delicate wrought iron and dark shutters – classic Valletta architecture.
Inside, however, things have been modernised. Rooms are bright and clean, with coffered ceilings and the odd duplex.
Everything is left clean and simple, and full of quality.
The building’s golden stone gleams here and there alongside soft whites and friendly golds.
Pops of veined marble and dark velvet add personality, and the views from the rooftop are superb.
It’s definitely been spruced up a lot, but only those of you dying for 17th-century authenticity will be disappointed with that
Anyone else who wants a simple but beautiful space, and a central but peaceful location, Palais Le Brun it is.

Rooms are stylish, but we find them very classic. Damask curtains have tasseled ties, and throw pillows are soft to the touch.
It feels antique, yet newly made, if that’s possible.
The Palais Le Brun baseline is white, and most furnishings are either rich woods or soft pinks and ivories.
Windows are typically only on one side, per Valletta architecture, some set into small balcony-like areas with charming shutters.
Double rooms are lovely, but quite simple. Deluxe options include separated areas, nice for larger groups. Superior rooms have gorgeous terraces, worth it for a breezy evening.
The Suites are perhaps the most exciting. Duplex options have romantic spiral staircases, and the Hot Tub Suites, well, we’d say those are the best terraces of them all.
Whatever you choose, you’ll be all set with a full desk, mini bar, tea and coffee machines, large LCD TVs, and plush robes and slippers.

And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Atmospheric breakfast: – served in a stone cellar space that feels cool and characterful.
- Rooftop pool: – a relaxed terrace setup where the views seem to steal the show.
- Scattered lounges: – cosy corners tucked into historic spaces give the hotel a lived-in feel.
- Light fitness: – a small gym covers the basics without pulling focus from the setting.
Breakfast is served under sandstone arches in a sleek cellar, perfect prep for a day in the sun.
You’ll find Palais Le Brun’s common areas scattered throughout, tucked into beautifully historic corners shaped by stone.
Originally intended for the mansion’s staff, they make up the heart of the building.
You’ll also find a small but effective fitness centre and, most importantly, an outdoor pool deck.
It’s the perfect place to cool off a bit without having to miss a second of the Maltese sun.
The views of Valletta and the Mediterranean Sea are easy to fall in love with.
You’ll enjoy them all, stretched on a lounge chair under the friendly shadow of large white umbrellas.
How is the neighbourhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Quiet corner: – feels slightly removed from Valletta’s busiest tourist flow.
- Walkable city: – most landmarks seem comfortably reachable on foot.
- Seaside access: – just a short stroll to the water and ferry connections.
- Island exploring: – rideshares make further spots like beaches and grottoes easy to reach.
Central Valletta doesn’t have many peaceful places, but Palais Le Brun’s small corner of Old Town is about as peaceful as it gets.
You’ll be set away from the bustle of St. John’s Co-Cathedral, and just a 5-minute walk from the seaside.
The ferry to Gozo is on the other side of the island, unfortunately, but it’s really not a huge deal.
Everywhere in Valletta is within walking distance, really. You have all the joys of Old Valletta on your doorstep at Palais Le Brun.
Museums and art galleries run all along Republic Street, small bars and restaurants waiting on side streets for you to find them.
To see the rest of the island, get a rideshare. Nothing on the island is prohibitively far, with both the Blue Grotto and Golden Bay within a half hour of the capital.
And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?
