The most central of all Valletta’s boutique hotels Domus Zamittello is housed in a 16th-century palazzo right on Republic Street.
It’s not a relaxed location; we’ll make that clear. Republic Street is a place of fun and festival and many tourists.
But it’s definitely got its finger on the pulse, though once you’re inside the hotel, it’s relaxed, smooth sailing.
Domus Zamittello is meticulously designed, the kind of bare-boned Georgian decor that can give modern when it likes but mostly prefers not to.
The large, open courtyard brings the sun into a collection of stylish pastels woven throughout the hotel.
Rooms are elegant and comfortable, the food and wine are great, and the staff are friendly and helpful.
All in all, Domus Zamittello is a haven of relaxed sophistication.
And the location just cannot be beaten, we feel, especially if you have only a few days to enjoy the city.
Even more so because the hotel is also very proactive with organizing day tours, excursions, and local experiences for guests.

The rooms at Domus Zamittello have the same royal, but not ostentatious, charm.
Of course, we’ve got the odd orchid and gold accents and starchy whites, but they’re toned down a bit, letting the space breathe.
Colors are muted here, but well-selected. There’s a kind of sheen to almost everything that gives an extra bit of luxury.
And they’re all unique. Guest rooms are scattered throughout the building, starting at a reasonable 22 square metres, yet ranging up to 40.
Premium options occupy the top floors, offering beautiful views of the bustling centre, but if you’re looking to splurge, we’d go all the way to a suite.
These feature everything from vaulted ceilings to soaking tubs to duplexes. The Signature Suite even has a kitchenette, which is a nice touch, as eating out in Valletta can get expensive.
Whatever you choose, you’ll enjoy a minibar, Nespresso machine, TV, seating area, robes, slippies, and a useful desk.

And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Courtyard dining: – Mediterranean meals and continental breakfasts served at L’Ancora Restaurant.
- Romantic atmosphere: – relaxed lunches and dinners paired with crisp white wines.
- Cosy spa: – warm, sanctuary-like interiors inside the intimate AMIS Spa.
- Rooftop terrace: – beautiful views over Valletta with drinks available from downstairs.
- Wellness facilities: – onsite gym and spa tucked into atmospheric sandstone spaces.
- Excursion support: – staff actively help organize tours and island experiences.
L’Ancora Boutique Restaurant is the spot for your morning continental, tucked in the courtyard.
Later on, come back for some high-quality Mediterranean cuisine served with citrus-y white wines.
It’s romantic without being too serious, excellent for a tipsy lunch or dinner.
Domus Zamittello’s onsite gym is one of those little sandstone rooms that look like the cellars of a castle.
But it’s far too small to have as many machines as it does, we feel, so just looks cramped.
On the same floor, there is their sanctuary-esque AMIS Spa.
It also works with the architecture, but much better – it’s a super cosy space full of warm whites and brilliant textiles.
Finally, we have the gorgeous rooftop terrace, with seating and unobstructed views of City Gate and the old Royal Opera House.
It’s equipped with a call bell for all the Aperol Spritz and whatever else you may need from the bar downstairs.
As mentioned above, Domus Zamittello is probably the best hotel to stay in if you’ve only a few days in Valletta, and not only for the location.
They can also arrange all sorts of tours and local experiences for guests – wine tasting, vineyard visits, yacht hire, archaeological site visits, etc., etc.

The neighbourhood is chaotic in high tourism season, we won’t lie. When the city is empty, on the other hand, this is the place to be.
But the city is rarely empty, and Domus Zamittello has done an excellent job, we’ll concede, making life among the crowds decidedly manageable.
Anyone looking for an easy distance to basically everything will be more than pleased.
