Want to feel tucked away while still feeling at the heart of it all? Violino D’Oro, a sleekly romantic boutique hotel in central Venice, strikes that balance perfectly.
In its charming little canal-side alleyway, you’ll still be just minutes walk from both the Grand Canal and St. Mark’s Square.
It’s a historic building but the decor leans less overtly historic, and more quietly timeless.
Vintage furniture, from different vintages, classic artworks, and softly muted colour schemes keep Violino D’Oro moving through the centuries.
Indeed, in some ways, the hotel feels like an ode to craftsmanship, of all generations and styles.
We have some quibbles with the borderline tacky, Venice-maxxing name, but anyone with an appreciation for beautiful things, be it furniture, fine art, or indeed food at their delightful Il Piccolo restaurant, will be happy at the Violin of Gold.

There’s an appeal to the rather sparse bedrooms, in a city of much full-on opulence.
The various muted shades woven through walls, linens, and upholstery work beautifully together.
Their atmospheric quality is punctuated by one-of-a-kind artworks, giving each room a feeling of a super-intimate personal gallery.
A few of the more stylish suites offer tastefully curated patterns that appear in curtains and throw pillows.
Guest rooms range from comfortably to notably roomy, with plenty of natural light to open up each space.
We’d recommend you go by room size when choosing, as the charm is pretty much constant throughout.
Suites are more luxurious, from spacious Juniors with stylish seating to panoramic Corner Suites and Rooftop Studios that would be our recommendation if you have the means.
In all, bedding is exquisite, marble bathrooms are delightful, and mini bars are expertly stocked.
It’s all rounded out by modern amenities like Nespresso machines, televisions and climate control.

And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Excellent restaurant: – Il Piccolo serves refined Italian cuisine with a stylish atmosphere.
- Elegant aperitivos: – sophisticated cocktails are a highlight.
- Vegan-friendly: – more plant-focused options than many Venice restaurants.
- Romantic setting: – ideal for intimate dinners, date nights, and long conversations.
- Helpful concierge: – staff can arrange spa visits, bespoke tours, and lots more
Any hotel bar that calls the aperativo a ‘sacred ritual’ is one to visit, in our books, and especially in Venice.
At Hotel Violino D’Oro this super charming hotel bar shares its name, Il Piccolo. with the hotel restaurant.
Both are delicately stylish, upscale and very charming spaces.
There’s a vegetarian flair, to the food, far more than most, but also plenty of opportunities to see what Italian cuisine can do with a choice cut as well.
Overall the food and service are excellent, and the atmosphere sophisticated – great for a date night if you’re coming as a couple.
The rest of Violino D’Oro is available for snuggling in corners with books or clandestine conversations.
It’s a small hotel so low on facilities but the concierge is more than happy to arrange local spa visits, restaurant reservations, bespoke tours, excursions etc.
How is the neighbourhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Central Venice base: – minutes from St. Mark’s Square and the Grand Canal.
- Tourist-heavy area: – expect crowds nearby.
- Easy vaporetto access: – Santa Maria del Giglio station connects you across Venice.
- Local escapes nearby: – Dorsoduro offers a more local café and nightlife scene.
- Island connections: – easy boat access to Murano, Lido, Giudecca, and beyond.
Yes, you’re tucked away from it all in many ways but it all in Venice is pretty full on, as you may be aware.
So expect tourists, the minute you leave your room. At St. Mark’s Square, a few minutes walk away, tourism reaches its crescendo, but that immediate area has most of the sites, so can’t, and really shouldn’t be avoided.
Keep walking though if you want to escape your fellow tourists somewhat – we’d say head to the Ponte dell’Accademia, and on to Dorsoduro, the University district for a still bustling, but far more local, cafe, and nightlife scene.
Or head to trendy Rialto via the vaporetto. The Santa Maria del Giglio station is just minutes walk from Hotel Violino D’Oro.
Once you’re on the water, the city is your oyster. A lovely network of boats zoom around Lido, Murano, Giudecca and more.
They can also take you easily to the train station, and all, less easily in fairness, to the airport, as it happens.
It’s a confusing city, but once you’ve got yourself on a boat, it becomes a lot simpler.
And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?
Some things guests liked:
“The experience at this hotel was amazing. I travel often and usually stay at very well rated hotels, and I can honestly say this one really stood out. Everything was spotless, the staff were incredibly attentive, and the decoration and overall atmosphere were beautiful. I loved the small thoughtful details, like the evening turndown touches and receiving the weather forecast for the next day. I felt extremely well taken care of from beginning to end and the service truly felt five star. A big congratulations to the entire team for such a special propertye….”
“The hotel is new and beautiful! Beds are very comfortable. The best service ever! Love, love everything! The location is amazing, so is the staff! Highly recommended!!!”
Some things guests didn’t like:
”No gym area….”
”Very little, to be honest. The only small suggestion would be the option of a slightly softer mattress topper for guests who prefer that, as the pillows were already great. Other than that, nothing to complain about….”
