The James Suite Hotel, Florence is an intimate space, not just in size, but in yards of soft velvets, low lighting, and a jungle-like selection of potted plants.
Each corner of the hotel invites you to imagine a different version of yourself: waking in a fairy-tale mansion, spending afternoons lounging artfully beneath decorative lanterns, or gazing out at Florence’s city lights late into the night.
This boutique hotel isn’t excessive in its facilities, it keeps a subtle footprint in its renovated 16th-century palazzo, and it’s all the more compelling for that.

There’s not actually much opportunity for a simple room at the James Suite Hotel.
The most basic accommodation comes in the form of spacious 34 square metre Deluxe Rooms.
Next up is the 36 square metre Junior Suite. It’s already resplendent with a stylish canopy frame bed and soaking tub, modernised with some lovely contemporary artwork.
Once you get past that, don’t even try for simple.
Indulge in the Court Suite’s private inner patio, or the stunning canopy of the JC Suite, where bright white fabric pours over all sides of a bed that sits underneath a series of hand-painted frescoes.
There’s truly no going wrong here, just make sure the view matches your expectations, or that your chosen room has a bath if that’s a dealbreaker.
Every option is expertly outfitted with Nespresso machines, Smeg kettles, minibars, Smart TVs and soft, cosy robes and slippies.

And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
• Tuscan dining – the restaurant pairs local cuisine with one of the hotel’s most striking interiors.
• Glass-roof setting – enjoy the feeling of alfresco dining without worrying about the weather.
• Stylish cocktails – the 1564 Lounge Bar serves handcrafted drinks in a glamorous velvet-filled space.
One of the hotel’s most beautifully appointed spaces, the James Restaurant, offers Tuscan cuisine among bespoke furnishings and gigantic plants.
A full glass roof that gives the impression of outdoor dining without any of the weather concerns.
They’re open for breezy, sunlit lunches and deeply romantic dinners perfect for sharing a tiramisu under the stars.
Something vaguely more casual, but still feeling a bit like a indie movie set, is the 1564 Lounge Bar.
Here, mint green and rosy pink velvet invites guests to linger over handcrafted cocktails under a stunner of a chandelier.
There’s not much more in the way of facilities; the hotel is happy to let the magic of old Florence do the entertaining.

And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?
Some things guests liked:
“The best hotel I have stayed in many years. I cannot recommend it enough. The attention to details and focus on customer is extraordinary. The JC suite is absolutely stunning….“
This was one of the best hotel experiences I’ve had in 20 years of traveling. We were there in April. From the moment we met General Manager and her team, we felt incredibly supported and well cared for. Our suite was beautifully styled, with both a tub and shower, a Dyson hair dryer, Nespresso machine, functional smart TVs in both rooms, a cute patio for reading, and a very comfortable bed….”
