TL;DR
- Historic-Dublin: Georgian townhouse paired with a striking mid-century modernist mews.
- Quiet and cultured: atmosphere ideal for design lovers and history buffs.
- Intimate scale: with a B&B feel rather than a full-service hotel.

Number 31 is for history & design nerds, and those who want a cozy, intimate stay among some of Dublin’s best Georgian architecture.
The present day hotel comprises a stately Georgian town house and its mews.
The mews were converted to a modernist lounge in 1957 by a young, ahead of his time, architect named Sam Stephenson.
We’ll admit, Number 31 is on the spartan end regarding facilities.
Ultimately, you’re looking at a super-swank, cozy, B&B, with interesting modernist remodellings, and excellent guest reviews.
What are the rooms like?
- 22 rooms: split between the main townhouse and the mews building.
- Design-led: interiors ranging from simple modern to more decorative upper categories.
- Very compact: entry-level rooms, typical of historic Dublin townhouses.
- See each room in detail here
Rooms are spread between the townhouse and the mews, but share a similar style.
They start with a simple kind of modern cosiness, getting fancier in the Plush room options.
To be completely honest, though, we prefer the look of the smaller rooms. The soft yet simple linens appeal much more to us than the velvety nonsense of the upper-tier options.
Yet, they are small. We mean it. Like, really small.
Intimate Doubles start at 10 square metres, Plush hit 15, and only the Fabulous options reach luxury boutique hotel worthy size.
Of course, this isn’t that odd for historic houses or Dublin, but we want you to be aware.
The largest room at Number 31 was the lodging of the architect. This is a diva move, we love it, and we would choose ‘Sam’s Room’ whenever available.
Whatever size you end up with, you’ll be perfectly happy with the amenities.
All rooms feature top-notch linens and toiletries sourced from Ireland, with TVs and coffee & tea facilities.
What are prices like?
And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- No restaurant: onsite, reinforcing the B&B-style experience.
- Excellent breakfast: with fresh pastries and cooked options.
- Relaxed spaces: including a conservatory and a garden with fireplace.
Another spartan element: no restaurant.
Yet, we are happy to report that Number 31 does offer a solid breakfast spread.
And by solid, we mean studded with freshly baked sweets, and hot savouries.
We think most guests would agree it’s worth having every other meal outside the hotel, just to get your hands on some of their poached pears and fluffy omelettes.
It’s served on communal tables for the B&B realness, or in the conservatory for something airy and green.
The rest of the facilities are basically that. You’ve got a sweet conservatory and a gorgeous garden with a cutting-edge fireplace.
And, should you need anything else, just ask the staff.
How is the neighbourhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Quietly central: location beside St. Stephen’s Green.
- Highly walkable: access to canals, parks, and cultural landmarks.
- Calm retreat: within reach of Dublin’s busiest districts.
There are more central-central hotels, but we like that Number 31 sits on the quiet side of St. Stephen’s Green. It solidifies the relative calm of the hotel experience.
Of course, you’re still in the middle of a city. And it’s quite a walkable one.
The Grand Canal, and all its associated paths, cafés, and pubs, is less than 5 minutes from the hotel.
For more green areas, both St. Stephens and Iveagh Gardens are less than 10 minutes to the north.
The upscale shopping hub of Grafton Street is under 20 minutes.
Cultural, and you’ll find the National Gallery and the National Museum right next door. Trinity College is just beyond that.
The chaos of Temple Bar is a half hour walk away. Check it out after a trip to Dublin Castle, maybe.
Head back down towards Number 31 once you’ve soaked up all the atmosphere, for some peace and quiet.
