On location – our first-hand impressions of Communal Hotel Plekhanovi
A Boutique Hotel Hub contributor visited this hotel in March 2026.
I arrived at Communal Hotel Plekhanovi, Tbilisi, after the front desk closed, to a lockbox, and the friendly sounds of next door’s restaurant floating in through velvet curtains.
The detailed self-check in instructions led me straight up a flight of art-lined stairs to my first-floor doorway, old-fashioned metal key tag warm in my palm.
The door opened to the tinkling of a bedside radio eeking out soft, jazzy numbers. It’s a touch I quite liked, even if the radio stays silent the rest of my stay.
My boots, coat, and scarf were easily tucked into the large closet by the doorway, next to the roomy black-and-white tiled bathroom with a rain shower that I couldn’t wait to spend some time under.
The vegan shampoo left my hair shiny, soft, and ginseng-y.
The warm light from my bedside lamps made the cosy-looking mattress much more appealing than the dreary light of a Tbilisi March evening outside.
Next morning consisted of breakfast spreads far too big for my stomach, brought to me by a super-sweet woman at the front desk.
Both Georgian and Levantine breakfast dishes set me up until later and my fill of khinkali and nigvziani badrijani on the outside.
On my way out, I lingered in the hallway to admire prints of famous Georgian buildings and mountains, and of the soft black and white nudes from the same lovely series that framed my bed.
TL;DR
- Hidden gem: – a stylish, slightly offbeat retreat away from the crowds.
- Artful interiors: – prints and eclectic objects give the sense of wandering through a lived-in gallery.
- Cinematic feel: – moody, almost theatrical atmosphere that lingers from room to room.
- Intimate scale: – with just 14 rooms, it feels personal and quietly welcoming.
- City-focused stay: – facilities are minimal; it seems designed for guests to spend ore time outside.
- Guest feedback: – reviews often highlight the warm service, stylish rooms, and thoughtful details.

Tucked into a corner in one of Tbilisi’s more lively, non-central neighbourhoods, Communal Hotel Plekhanovi is all chic, charm, and novelty.
As you enter the eye-catching navy townhouse, be sure to check out the paintings and prints that line the stairwell.
The lively collection of oddities makes each trip to your room feel like a walk through a quirky gallery.
Communal is a small Georgian chain, where the Plekhanovi location feels perhaps most like their hidden gem.
Each hotel is a beautiful mix of unique decor and undeniable taste. This one especially feels cinematic, like it belongs in an HBO special about a village woman trying to make it in Tbilisi as an opera star.
Something dark and dramatic yet hopeful at heart.
As a super-small hotel, Communal Plekhanovi is sparse on the facilities. This is a place for someone looking to get most of their exercise and pampering done out in the city.
If you want all the accoutrements, we’ll send you somewhere else. If you want a lovely, welcoming space to hang your hat, this is the one.
What are the rooms like?
- 14 rooms: – small size, and calm, almost private-house feel.
- Range of styles: – Options are thoughtfully varied.
- Moody touches: – embroidered pillows and rich tones add character without being overwhelming.
- Upgraded comforts: – suites stand out with spa baths, hot tubs and cocktail carts.
- See each room in detail here
Rooms vary from cosy, budget-friendly Smalls to a plush Architect’s Suite.
The decor throughout is sophisticated and understated. There’s not much to write home about in most of the rooms, but enough moody colour and embroidered throw pillows to make binge-watching Bridgerton with grocery store rkatsiteli feel stylishly indulgent.
And once you get up to the suites, you won’t need to create your own pampering. Spa baths, hot tubs, and cocktail carts populate the upper-level rooms.
Luxuriate near a window or enjoy a cheeky cigarette on a balcony looking out towards the courtyard.
Even Communal Plekhanovi’s most basic rooms, the Standard and Small Doubles, are perfectly comfortable.
They feature vegan bath amenities, large Smart TVs, mini fridges, and kettles with coffee and tea.
What are prices like?
And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Limited facilities: – setup is simple, with more focus on style than full-service.
- Levantine dining: – Weller geared towards generous breakfasts and well-executed East Mediterranean plates.
- Local wines: – the Georgian-heavy wine list downstairs makes sampling regional vintages easy.
- Cosy bar: – Craft has a relaxed, more local feel.
- Helpful staff: – the front desk is genuinely engaged and helpful.
Unfortunately for anyone looking for super-professional services, the facilities Communal Plekhanovi are limited.
They do have two dining areas, a Levantine restaurant called Weller, a lovely bar named Craft, and super-friendly front-desk service for anyone wanting to make a reservation or get a recommendation for places outside.
Weller is the space for giant breakfasts and nicely crafted East Mediterranean snacks.
Unsurprisingly, they turn to Georgia for the wine list, allowing you to taste some of the country’s best vintages right downstairs.
Craft does the same, with the added charm of more locally-inspired food.
Neither of the spots is large, but they are as deftly decorated as the rest of the hotel, a comfortable intersection between casual and elegant charm.
How is the neighbourhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Local feel: – on the quieter side of the river, the area feels more residential and lived-in.
- Easy wandering: – short walk to Davit Aghmashenebeli Ave brings you into a stretch of shops and cafés.
- Walkable city: – major sights around 20 minutes on foot, with plenty to catch your eye along the way.
- Well connected: – taxis and Bolt readily available if you’d rather skip the walk.
Tbilisi is split in half by the Kura River, and Plekhanovi is on the opposite side of the majority of the tourist attractions.
In a larger city, this might be frustrating, but here it just means a little more walking than usual.
Or not. Staying local isn’t a problem. There are plenty of excellent places to eat, hang out, and explore in Plekhanovi, Communal of course, being one of them.
10 minutes or less to Davit Aghmashenebeli Ave gets you into the midst of a lively road lined with stores, restaurants, and more.
It’s delightful, relaxing, and welcoming, but admittedly nothing of the grandeur of the other side.
These will all be at least 20 minutes walking, to Tbilisi Opera’s striped limestone, the elegant archways of the Rustaveli National Theatre, or the golden sheen of Saint George watching over Liberty Square.
Yet, it’s a nice walk. There’s plenty of green space, a park full of street vendors by the bridge, and a brewery, cafe, or wine bar around almost every corner.
If you prefer not to, there are buses, taxis, and Bolts ready to take you anywhere you want to go.
And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?
Some things guests liked:
“Wonderful hotel with beautiful rooms and excellent food. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and a special mention to Salome, who was incredibly kind and made sure we had everything we needed during our stay….”
“The rooms are very nicely decorated, amenities are good, the bathtub gives it a nice charm, bed comfortable, not noisy, all was very nice! And we still got a complimentary bottle of wine….”
Some things guests didn’t like:
”The restaurant had limited breakfast options and was quite expensive, so in the end we didn’t have dinner or breakfast there….”
”The air conditioning in our room was not working, but it was a very minor issue – we simply opened the windows and everything was perfectly fine….”
