This small boutique hotel pairs contemporary comfort with the historic character of Carnot-Gailleton in Lyon’s 2nd arrondissement.
At the heart of Hotel De Verdun 1882 is a beautiful stone staircase, from which guests access their rooms.
It allows the generally clean-lined, contemporary interiors to blend into the building’s historic character.
Hotel De Verdun 1882 respects tradition but isn’t afraid of thoughtful, subtle contemporary design.
Things are crisp, but eclectic collections of artwork and vintage trinkets spread throughout the hotel add homeliness to the mix.
And the vibe is homely and cosy throughout, with inviting common spaces. Prices are reasonable too for a quality hotel in central Lyon.

We love all the historical bits and bobs in common areas, but rooms should prioritize creature comforts.
At Hotel De Verdun 1882, this is exactly what you get, with the guest rooms the most modern spaces in the building.
A muted colour scheme ensures nothing can overpower the old-world charm of the hotel, though clearly created with a keen, contemporary eye for design.
Dark yet friendly shades contrast beautifully with your typical bright hotel whites. Unique furnishings, many of which are vintage, create a subtle range of memories and time periods.
Standard rooms offer small spaces, good for a solo traveller; you’ll want to go up to the Junior Suite if you’re dedicated to more than 20 square metres.
There are many options for families or groups, which is a nice touch.
Many of the rooms connect; Twin rooms seem perfect for a pair of besties, and the Chambre Familiale & Amicale (we love the name) features fold-out bunk beds.
Whatever you choose, you’ll be surrounded by top-notch eco-friendly toiletries and linens. All rooms have TVs.
What are prices like?
And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Local breakfast: – regional cheeses, artisan bread and fruit from the hotel’s own orchard.
- Welcoming spaces: – beautifully decorated lounges perfect for relaxing.
- Authentic produce: – a strong focus on local suppliers and seasonal ingredients.
- Massage treatments: – available for Superior Room and Suite guests.
- Simple facilities: – limited amenities but plenty of warmth and character.
A charming little breakfast spread will greet you every morning, all your favourite juices, pastries and cheeses readying you for the day.
Hotel De Verdun 1882 also places importance on the locality of their offerings.
Their Comté and Saint Marcellin cheeses come from the local Mons cheese factory, and the bread from Vieux Pétrin, using all local flours.
The hotel also has its own orchard outside the city from where it gets its fresh breakfast fruits.
The dining space is a lovely place to hang out, and the common areas are gorgeously decorated, but beyond that, the hotel is low on facilities.
The homely atmosphere makes up for it for us at Hotel de Verdun 1882, but guests looking for more of a pampering might want to look elsewhere.
They do have massage services for guests in Superior rooms and Suites though. It’s a nice way to feel luxury hotel-level spoiled while keeping the intimate vibe and good value pricing.
How is the neighbourhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Central location: – walk easily to Vieux Lyon, Bellecour and major attractions.
- Foodie district: – Carnot-Gailleton is known for excellent restaurants.
- Transport links: – Perrache station and metro are just five minutes away.
- Easy sightseeing: – Renaissance streets, museums and riverside walks are all nearby.
- Modern Lyon: – La Confluence offers an interesting contrast to the historic centre.
Lyon is a large municipality, but the majority of its tourism is focused on the Vieux Lyon, the historical centre of the city.
At Hotel De Verdun 1882, you’ll have easy access to there, but also be close to its commercial heart.
Carnot-Gailleton itself is a chic area known for having some of Lyon’s best eateries.
Just to the south is a very interesting new urban renewal project, La Confluence, which is transforming a former industrial port area into a sustainable neighborhood.
It’s about 20 minutes away on foot, and definitely worth a look.
Most places of interest, though, you’ll find are to the north of the hotel.
It’s about 10 minutes walk to the start of Vieux Lyon, just across the river, where you can enjoy all the beauty of French Renaissance architecture.
Bellecour and much of Lyon’s shopping is even closer.
Farther up the peninsula, you could wander to the Amphitheater of the Three Gauls, for example.
And/or continue up the hill to our favourite neighbourhood in Lyon; the peaceful, old bohemian oasis of La Croix-Rousse.
Hotel De Verdun 1882 is very central, with the metro and public transport hub of Lyon-Perrache just 5 minutes away on foot.
And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?
Some things guests liked:
“The staff were wonderful from the minute we arrived. Nothing was too much trouble and everyone was friendly. The room was very comfortable and the little touches, coffee on tap and cold water, along with good air conditioning made our stay memorable. Would highly recommend. Thank you for having us….”
“Hôtel was gorgeous and well decorated. Bathroom was spacious and we really enjoyed the bunk beds for our girls. There was a lot room in the bathroom and also under the beds for storage. Best part was the AC worked really well!!! I would not stay anywhere else in Lyon. Location was also really good! 600 feet from the metro and major train station, close to very large supermarket and hundreds of shops and restaurants. Starbucks is a few blocks away. One block from a very large children’s park and many nice restaurants…..”
Some things guests didn’t like:
”Parking was available but definitely challenging very tight in the garage….”
”Didn’t have had a light in bathroom above mirror for putting make up on….”
