The Kaarti, Helsinki branch of, Pan-European apart-hotel chain, Bob W is a slick, well-executed example of what makes them so popular.
Bob Ws are designed to be as welcoming and charming as apart-hotels can be, and in the most basic, surprisingly overlooked, ways.
Common areas are friendly and inviting, and the rooms act like they really want you to feel at home.
Spend most of your time then in the beautifully decorated lounges with your fellow guests, or in your homely suite.
In many apart-hotels, the latter is pretty much your only choice, but here both feel very natural.
Equally, you can choose to cook in your own kitchenette or in the common kitchen.
Decor vibes are very much contemporary chic, with plenty of swoopy furnishings, all of the usual houseplant suspects, and low, refined lighting.
It’s an international brand, and it shows: these little apartments could exist almost anywhere.
And indeed they do – all over Europe – but Bob W, in Helsinki anyway, seems to have nailed the apart-hotel formula where nearly all others fall short.
What are the rooms like?
- 55 apartments: A mix of compact studios to plush penthouses designed for short or longer stays.
- Calm interiors: Pale woods, soft pastels and simple styling that’s easy to personalise.
- Fully equipped: Kitchenettes, smart TVs, seating and work areas in every unit.

It’s a testament to the cosiness of the common areas at Kaarti’s Bob W that rooms might have the least personality.
Of course, this doesn’t have to be a negative. It makes it a little easier for you to make your apartment feel like your personal space.
In general, there’s a friendly simplicity to it all, with lots of pale wood, white linens, and pastels.
Some options have interesting architectural details, but mostly the spaces are there to serve you.
Compact Apartments, we will warn you, are just that – compact.
Even as a typical boutique hotel room, they might be described as smallish.
As an apartment, we’re talking ingénue in a 40s film moving to the Big City, and a charming but tiny studio where she cooks eggs on a stack of scripts until she meets Cary Grant.
Other options start at 18 square metres and are nicely sized, perfectly comfortable.
The Penthouse 1-bedrooms are genuinely plush. That’s where Cary Grant stays lives.
If you’re in Helsinki for a while, or for work, we’d argue it’s worth having that extra space, and a sauna too.
All options will give you a comfortable stay; all have kitchenettes, smart TVs, seating, and some kind of working area.
What are prices like?
And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Self-catering: Private kitchenettes plus a well-equipped shared kitchen.
- Co-work friendly: Comfortable communal spaces designed for working or socialising.
- Digital concierge: Virtual services, local guides and wellness options replace a traditional front desk.
Food is self-service, you have your own kitchenette, and there’s a better-equipped shared kitchen in the common area.
The rest of the space is superb for anyone who likes to co-work.
An indoor garden-ish area offers something kind of outdoorsy, while the kitchen has enough space for you to hang out a bit.
Guest memberships to local gyms can be arranged by the hotel, or just take liberal advantage of the hotel’s extensive virtual concierge.
They have online yoga classes, they have local guides, and they have everything you need to elevate a holiday.
For us, it doesn’t have the same charm as a helpful human staff member, but we accept that most people just prefer getting things done on a small screen these days, and in this case, from the comfort of a plush bed.
How is the neighbourhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Ultra-central: One of the most walkable locations in Helsinki.
- Museum-rich: Architecture, Media and Fire Department museums right nearby.
- Outdoor access: Easy walks or bike rides to parks, gardens, beaches and waterfronts.
It’s pretty impossible to get any more Central Helsinki than this.
Most sightseeing is within walking distance, from the lively Kauppatori Market to the grandiose Senate Square.
There are also a great number of little museums. The Architecture & Design Museum is just down the street, the Media and Fire Department museums right across from the hotel.
You’ll have to go to other neighbourhoods for the rest, but we promise it’s easy.
Most things aren’t too far apart, public transport is excellent, and the city is also quite bikeable.
Oodi library and the Kaisaniemi botanic garden are a 20-minute walk.
Beyond them, you’ll find extensive green space that makes a lovely bike ride, close to Töölö’s waterside charm.
The beaches over by Hietaniemi are just 10-minutes away by bike.
And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?
