In our opinion, Manhattan’s Upper West Side doesn’t get the attention it deserves. If you’re not sure what we mean, The Wallace can help you with that. If you are sure, then you’ll know this hotel is worth a look. It’s nothing mind-blowing in terms of ambiance. We’ve got a lot of dark wood in the common areas, and a lot of white with bold accents in the rooms. But who wants a reinvented wheel, anyway? The Wallace has all the hallmarks of classic luxury, beautifully executed. The exterior oozes… > Read Our Full Review

This stunning boutique hotel, in an iconic building in Downtown Detroit Michigan, first opened in 2014 as the Aloft at the David Whitney. The pandemic, however, lead to its transformation into the more simply titled, Hotel David Whitney, a current jewel in Marriott’s Autograph Collection. It is Detroit’s Grand Hotel, a monument to the grandeur of the city’s era of prosperity and opulence. The building is one of the few left in the city by the famed architecture firm Daniel H. The plush, resort-style Edgewater Beach Hotel, on the edge of Naples, FL, visually, might not have much more going on that any other luxury Florida hotel. We’re talking white walls, square buildings, palm trees, balconies. Classic plush, where nothing really stands out, for better or worse. Many Miami hotels, even boutique hotels, walk the edge of gaudy excess, but down in South Beach above all places, Hotel Greystone offers a masterclass in well, class. Its beautifully renovated historical Art Deco facade gleams white in the sunshine, set off by a flashy vertical sign (our favorite)! It’s in good company though, just across the street from the Asian-influenced boutique elegance of The Setai. That’s the two very best boutique hotels in South Beach right across from each other. It’s tucked off a rural street on the edges of downtown Jackson, which is pretty secluded all on its own. Getting there is part homecoming, part adventure. The Farnam, from Marriott’s Autograph Collection, is the most Old Market central of all Omaha’s boutique hotels. As millennial aesthetics regained popularity in the early 2020s, some clever hoteliers took over a 1990s landmark skyscraper and turned it into a hotel. Enter The Farnam, a building worthy of a midwestern remake of Fight Club. It’s not hard to imagine baby Edward Norton staring out of the top-floor Billionaire Suite towards the First National Center. A lot of Downtown San Antonio’s charm is stucco buildings and ageless architecture, but that’s not all of it. Take this gleaming glass tower of a hotel, taller and more reflective than any of its counterparts. The Thompson, from Hyatt, is on bigger side of how we like our boutiques, but its sleek modern zhuzh is undeniable. The building itself has plenty of little hints at Art Deco, and the interiors lean in. Light fixtures are grand and the walls geometric. This Oak Bluffs boutique hotel is just the kind of nontraditional experience you want to make a trip to Martha’s Vineyard remarkable. Another supremely cute offering from New England hotel powerhouse Lark Hotels, Summercamp is a bright, sunny way to spend a vacation with your inner child. We like a bit of grunge as much as (more than?) your average nontraditional hotel aficionado, but we’re also suckers for when grunge and our inner diva get together. New Haven, Connecticut, isn’t exactly a hotspot for boutique hotels, which makes it even more exciting to find this unique place right on the edge of the Quinnipiac in the Long Wharf district. This central Montauk boutique motel is open year-round. That is, it’s open March-December, which is pretty close for The Hamptons. This gives this motel a little more local flavor, and gives you the chance for an off-season visit, our recommended time for a Montauk vacation. We’re also big fans of the ‘yep, we’re a motel’ vibe. It’s unassuming without feeling gimmicky, and while it doesn’t look quite as glamorous the price might suggest, c’est la Hamptons. It’s not like it’s a low-effort spot, either. This Franklinton, Columbus hotel is the place to be if you want to be west of the Scioto. Only opening in late 2023, it already somehow feels quite emblematic of the neighborhood. Franklinton is a cool, boxy zone, dominated by one of Columbus’ main attractions: the Center of Science and Industry (COSI). The Junto is a decidedly contemporary hotel, but there’s a mature charm to the leather couches and central fireplace. Sure, everyone loves an old ship captain’s house full of antiques, linen and wicker deck furniture, but we’re all happy that Edgartown has something a bit more contemporary. Another gem from Lark Hotels, this funky-chic boutique hotel from the brand’s Edgartown Collection is a breath of fresh air among the salty breezes of Martha’s Vineyard. There are many great boutique hotels in Marriott’s Autograph Collection, a portfolio of upscale, independent affiliates. This Downtown offering is definitely one of them: a plush, tasteful and well-situated property from which to enjoy St. Louis. Hotel Saint Louis provides more than enough comfort for those for whom boutique hotel means luxury hotel, and it couldn’t be closer to most of the main attractions. What are the rooms like? There are few things more hip than a converted factory we sometimes think, and this Williamsburg, Brooklyn boutique hotel is more proof. Wythe is stylish, well situated and offers some incredible views. The unique interior gives a distinctly contemporary New York experience. From the glowing letters on the corner of the building to the East River just a few minutes away, we find The Wythe doesn’t shy away from its urbanity. The Kimpton Journeyman is a Third Ward favorite that raises the bar for luxury boutique hotels in Milwaukee. It doesn’t tie the space much to Milwaukee, though. It’s a bit like someone 3D printed it you could say. It’s an IHG hotel and, as with a lot of the chains, there’s more of the feeling that you’re in a Kimpton/IHG hotel, rather than in a (insert city here) hotel. One of the few non-New England locations by the indomitable Lark boutique hotel chain, Blind Tiger is Downtown Asheville’s top inn-style accommodation. It’s committed to the guesthouse vibe, so no boozy parties at the hip on-site bar, but we’re not convinced this is necessary in a town with so many breweries. This Downtown Pittsburgh hotel, at the intersection of the three waterways, is a lofty old beauty, dating all the way back to 1902. Originally, it would’ve been considered a skyscraper, and it’s a mild surprise that the Industrialist has the intimacy that it does, in such a large container. Finding a small-scale, mid-century relic of a boutique hotel in downtown Phoenix is not what we would call easy. In a city better known for the reliable comfort of corporate hoteliery, RISE Uptown is a nice anomaly. A clean, modern renovation of the late ’50s original proudly carries on the retro vibe with some truly spectacular signage and the original towers, set alongside a new pool and a much more contemporary welcome building. The Standard East Village is a modern high-rise hotel that stands out in a neighborhood dominated by lower-rise buildings. Some will love the fresh, youthful take on accommodation.
