Bairro Alto Hotel

Bairro Alto Hotel, in the Lisbon neighbourhood of the same name, is a nicely old fashioned, upscale option in the City of Seven Hills. But, at Bairro Alto Hotel, you don’t really have to deal with the hills unless you want to. You’re at the top of a hill here for starters, hence the name, and it’s a pretty much self contained, touristic neighbourhood. The hotel is pretty self contained too. It is the kind of place that you could probably spend a week in, if you brought a nice… > Read Our Full Review

AlmaLusa Baixa/Chiado

If you want mainly old but also a bit new, there’s AlmaLusa Baixa/Chiado, a gorgeous boutique hotel named for the neighbourhoods it straddles. The location makes for a super-central Lisbon stay, the small number of rooms adds intimacy, and for a little bit of local flavour, all you have to do is look around. It’s set in a 17th-century renovated arsenal, history deep within its walls. The building certainly feels historic though there’s no attempt to connect the place to its particular, unique, history. The decor is fresh, simple and… > Read Our Full Review

Pestana Vintage Porto Hotel

Bask by the waterfront for this iconic Riveira boutique, which boasts modern luxury, historic beauty and central convenience. Pestana Vintage Porto occupies a set of 18th century buildings deemed culturally significant by UNESCO, so you know you’re in good hands. And they are uniformly charming from the outside, walls a warm range of ochres, brick reds, and soft stone. It sparks the imagination, visions of riverboat merchants just an easy daydream away. The hotel, in our humble opinion, got a bit carried away trying to contemporize the interior though. Rather… > Read Our Full Review

Torel Palace Hotel Porto

Torel Palace Porto is full-on glamour. We’re talking chandeliers, domed skylights, ornate stucco ceilings, a touch of velvet, the works. It bills itself as a writer’s paradise, but they clearly don’t mean the starving-artist, Le Bohem type. Nope, this is the spot for the successful writers you find in history books. And the Portuguese ones, at least, you can learn much about here. From the dreamy pink 1861 building to the writer’s names ascribed to each room, you’ll leave Torel Palace Porto with a better understanding of the city than… > Read Our Full Review

Sublime Lisboa

This intimate boutique hotel in Lisbon’s upscale Amoreiras neighbourhood lives right up to its name. Sublime Lisboa is tucked on a corner of a bright, tree-lined street, and the 20th-century townhouse it occupies has a timeless appeal. Normally, antique buildings like this come with very ‘cosy’ (read: small) rooms, and there’s a very small bit of that here. In general, however, every option is comfortable. Even the smaller options benefit from excellent design work. As with many Lisbon boutique hotels, Sublime balances hip design and elegant sophistication beautifully. Common areas… > Read Our Full Review

Casa da Companhia Hotel & Spa

Casa da Companhia Hotel & Spa offers history and luxury on one of Ribeira, Porto’s most charming streets; Rua das Flores. Especially in the common areas, there is much 18th century origin grandeur to admire. The magisterial stone columns and wrought iron facade give a handsome sheen to the entire place. The rest of the design we find a bit incongruous, perhaps because of the hotel’s corporate connections. It’s part of IHG’s Vignette Collection, partnered with La’Occitane in the onsite spa. They claim to have preserved plenty of design elements,… > Read Our Full Review

Hotel Hotel, Lisbon

Hotel Hotel, Lisbon. You just don’t know what to expect from a hotel named Hotel Hotel, do you? One person could see irreverence, a pair of adorably goofball owners, maybe? Another might imagine a whole bunch of exhaustingly self-curated hipsters slouching about the place. Either way, it could all easily turn gimmicky. This is definitely on the hip side of things, but the way it’s executed is so effortless it’s hard to dislike. Any ironic, self-indulgent humour is limited to the name. The rest of Hotel Hotel is lovingly constructed… > Read Our Full Review

The Yeatman Hotel

There are some words that always look nice next to each other, and we’d like to add ‘luxury wine spa hotel’ to any list. Porto’s the Yeatman Hotel offers all of it in one beautiful package, tied up with cheerful yellow chiffon or stuffed in an oversized barrel. No, really, they have barrel beds. More on that later. The Yeatman is a bit bigger than most of Porto’s top boutique hotels, lacking slightly in the intimacy you’ll find elsewhere. If you can handle a bit more of a business-chic vibe,… > Read Our Full Review
